Right back at you!

nothing like a good morning workout...

dat - Posted - 01/29/2013:  07:45:22

my morning workout is starting the coffee pot

OM45GE - Posted - 01/29/2013:  09:30:28

Walking Toby is mu morning workout. Three miles at 3:00 AM.

DeanT - Posted - 01/29/2013:  09:33:09

Speaking of three miles... time for my mid-day run...

dat - Posted - 01/29/2013:  09:33:54

3 am I was snoring pretty good,   I can wake up without an alarm clock at 3 am for a hunting trip, but during the week I get up at the last minute to get ready for work

OM45GE - Posted - 01/29/2013:  09:36:20

I've never needed an alarm clock. Even if I have to get up real early to make a flight, I just seem to wake up. It actually sort of sucks because I would love to sleep more.

DeanT - Posted - 01/29/2013:  09:39:29

I have four legged alarm clocks

OM45GE - Posted - 01/29/2013:  09:41:22

I usually wake Toby up, but he's raring to go when I do.

Alaina - Posted - 01/29/2013:  10:23:13

Charley was sick a few months ago and it was to the point that he just wanted to be left alone to sleep all day. I took him to the vet, who gave him prednisone, and now he's awake and barking at 5am without fail...

DeanT - Posted - 01/29/2013:  11:28:29

That's because pred makes you have to pee all the time!

Alaina - Posted - 01/29/2013:  11:49:31

He has a dog door that he has full access to.

dat - Posted - 01/29/2013:  13:58:57

maby you should prop the door open for him

Alaina - Posted - 01/29/2013:  15:11:54

He barks because he thinks he needs food. He doesn't realize that I need sleep and can't go back to sleep as soon as he is done eating...

dat - Posted - 01/29/2013:  15:26:46

I always use an automatic feeder, they eat what they want then quit, once they learn they there is always food, NORMALLY they will only eat what they need and not get fat,   that normally isn't always true though, sometimes dogs just like to eat and not get out and exercise and they'll get fat.   most of the time it may take a little adjusting, but if they know there is plenty of food and no threats of something else eating it all, they'll be ok with it

DeanT - Posted - 01/29/2013:  16:56:49

Is he still on prednisone? (you know it's a steroid right?). That stuff has serious side effects. Especially dehydration and hunger. Long term is zaps bone density and messes up natural hormone function. Google side effects, and read read read. At first it appears to be a miracle drug... but not for long.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/30/2013:  04:17:25

You said it Dean. It's useful for treating specific problems but I wouldn't use it as a maintenance drug.

DeanT - Posted - 01/30/2013:  06:50:21

I was on it myself for two years, so I have first hand experience. It really gets nasty, and you can't just stop taking it either... you have to taper, or things get even worse.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/30/2013:  09:31:23

I know, I was on it for an allergy related asthma problem. Made me sick as a dog (pun intended).

Alaina - Posted - 01/30/2013:  09:58:14

The vet and I are watching him closely. He just finished it on Sunday and I made sure he always had water in front of him. I was actually talking to a friend a couple weeks ago who told me to try fish oil for his dry skin (he has horrible allergies that no one can find the cure for). Started him on that and his coat is soft and happy again. So we will see how that goes, hopefully it fixes most of the problem.

dat - Posted - 01/30/2013:  10:17:31

fish oil and bacon grease for the skin and coat, garlic for the fleas and a beer for desert.

Alaina - Posted - 01/30/2013:  10:19:30

I gave him a beer once... It was really funny until he threw it up on the carpet.

DeanT - Posted - 01/30/2013:  11:02:08

Looooong story short, after about two years of misery, we found out that it was the chemicals in the dryer sheets, that were causing our dog's allergies. It finally clicked (after different food$ and med$) that it always got worse after their bedding was washed. No more dryer sheets for anything around here, and the dogs have been fine ever since.

Alaina - Posted - 01/30/2013:  11:04:27

I honestly think it is something at home. Whenever I take him to my boyfriend's place, he's fine. But after about 5 hours of being back at home, he is scratching up a storm.

dat - Posted - 01/30/2013:  11:55:11

try different laundry soap, different house cleaning soap,   does he get worst inside or outside,   if he is OK somewhere else, he can be OK at home when you find out what it is      (sounds easy when you're typing)

Alaina - Posted - 01/30/2013:  12:00:40

I really think it might be the carpet. When we lived in Sicily (where I got him) we had tile floors everywhere, just rugs in a couple rooms. He was totally fine there. When we moved here, the entire house is carpeted and that is when it started. At my boyfriend's house, the downstairs is tile and Charley doesn't go upstairs. But we don't really use anything to clean the carpet except the spots where he tracks in dirt or destroys a packet of pizza sauce (Folex is a beautiful thing).

dat - Posted - 01/30/2013:  12:05:43

we took all the carpet out of our house a few years ago, tile everywhere except the bedrooms then laminate wood in the bedrooms

Alaina - Posted - 01/30/2013:  12:09:11

Well we don't exactly own our house, otherwise we would have done that a long time ago. I absolutely hate carpet and would rather just have rugs everywhere. Much easier and cheaper to replace, plus it gives more freedom for decorating.

DeanT - Posted - 01/30/2013:  16:55:25

we pulled all our carpets too. It was only down for 8 years... and it was so nasty under it, I couldn't believe it. We have an old house with hardwood floors. I don't think I'll ever have a carpeted house again.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/31/2013:  02:46:26

We have hardwood or tile everywhere but the office which is carpeted. When we bought the house I pulled up wall to wall that was over beautiful pegged oak floors. I was amazed and disgusted by what a mess it was underneath. Refinished the floors and would never go back.

dat - Posted - 01/31/2013:  05:43:41

I never could figure out why somebody would cover wood with carpet

DeanT - Posted - 01/31/2013:  07:10:26

It's cool to run the shop vac and the house is done in 10 minutes.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/31/2013:  07:45:05

Just as bad, we bought new appliances and when we pulled out the old stove we found this beautiful ceramic tile floor with hardwood divider strips that had been covered with cheap and poorly installed laminate flooring. We ripped that up and refinished the wood strips and it looks great.

dat - Posted - 01/31/2013:  08:46:54

I'll bet tile with wood dividers would look good, I can't say that I've ever seen it done like that

OM45GE - Posted - 01/31/2013:  10:03:44

Here's a picture of Toby on it.

I want a house with hardwood floors everywhere. I love it!

dat - Posted - 01/31/2013:  10:28:46

what does Toby have cornered up there

Alaina - Posted - 01/31/2013:  10:30:01

Looks like a super cute puppy

OM45GE - Posted - 01/31/2013:  10:31:22

It was my nephew's puppy and it was cute, but they've turned him into a nasty little bundle of neuroses.

Alaina - Posted - 01/31/2013:  10:32:34

Nooooooooooooo! How dare they do such a thing to such an adorable puppy?!?!

OM45GE - Posted - 01/31/2013:  10:34:57

Some people shouldn't own dogs. He couldn't be left alone because he would howl and chew everything in sight. They got him another dog for company and now they have two howling, nut case devourers of shoes and furniture and no friends who care to visit them.

Alaina - Posted - 01/31/2013:  10:36:54

Charley howled and chewed until he got tired of being locked up in his crate every time we left the house. Now, as long as he is in a familiar place, he's fine. He still gets upset and barks a couple times when I leave him at my boyfriend's place, but then he settles down and sleeps while we're gone.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/31/2013:  10:39:07

Toby's fine home alone. I just don't like it when he takes my sport car for fast drives.

dat - Posted - 01/31/2013:  10:40:43

or gets the jeep stuck while trying to cross the creek

OM45GE - Posted - 01/31/2013:  10:41:05

Don't you just hate that?

Alaina - Posted - 01/31/2013:  10:42:41

Haha thankfully Charley hates car rides so I don't have to worry about that

OM45GE - Posted - 01/31/2013:  10:44:45

Toby likes going places but he doesn't really enjoy the trip. Rumble Strips and bad pavement drive him nuts and he starts shaking. I think the deep noise scares him.

dat - Posted - 01/31/2013:  11:10:02

probably the deep noises he hears around you get to smelling after he hears them,

you can't blame him there   dead

OM45GE - Posted - 01/31/2013:  12:00:24

He's actually a worse offender on that front (or behind as the case may be).

Alaina - Posted - 01/31/2013:  12:04:20

I'm just thrilled that Charley has stopped throwing up every time we go somewhere
