2nd place on the all time request list was Wagon Wheel

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/12/2017:  17:54:58

I like Wagon Wheel,, but not 24/7

OM45GE - Posted - 04/12/2017:  18:25:44

Most of the gigs I do don't generate requests. I just play what I put together.

DeanT - Posted - 04/13/2017:  06:18:43

I think that's why DJ's are killing live bands. Hook a lap-top/ Ipod to a PA and you've got every song known to man. So the bar owner has a choice. $75 bucks for a DJ who can honor any request with the actual song, or a live band for $250 who has a set list, and when they do covers they don't sound exactly like the radio. Live music is dying, and the new generation don't care.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/13/2017:  16:41:22

We have a thriving live music scene in the Boston area. There are a lot of DJ bars, but lots of places where people go specifically to see live music. All different genres too.

DeanT - Posted - 04/13/2017:  17:19:28

I wish! It's pretty much dead here. Even the general bar scene is dying. Vacant old bars are everywhere. Everyone is at home on their electronic devices.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/14/2017:  03:00:15

My son has a gig with a pro band at Ryles Jazz club. It's a great jazz dinner club.

rylesjazz.com/

Then there's Stone Mountain Arts Center (SMAC). I've seen a bunch of great acts there from local artists to Chris Smither, Peter Wolf, Cheryl Wheeler, Richard Thompson and John Gorka.

stonemountainartscenter.com/ArtsCenter/

There's too many more to mention but those are two of my favorites.

DeanT - Posted - 04/14/2017:  10:37:35

Nothing like that around here. We have an old restored concert theater downtown that gets some big acts. I think it seats around 500. We've had Loretta Lynne and Belle Fleck, and they didn't even sell out.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/14/2017:  13:02:55

Bella has played at SMAC. I didn't get to see him.

We've got some top music schools here like The Berkley College of Music and The New England Conservatory of Music as well as strong music programs at a bunch of the regular colleges and universities. It drive some of the live music scene, but New England in general has always been pretty good for the performing arts.

DeanT - Posted - 04/14/2017:  16:18:07

Our music scene is canned DJ music, for the few bars that are still open. Funny though, someone like Taylor Swift or Blake Shelton comes to town and they sell out the downtown arena. My wife and I went to see Chicago there a couple months ago, great show.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/15/2017:  05:06:15

I don't enjoy the big arena shows as much as smaller venues. I've seen some good ones, like a recent Stones tour and Simon and Garfunkel's reunion tour a while ago, but I prefer more intimate settings.

DeanT - Posted - 04/15/2017:  06:40:41

We saw the Stones at the WSU stadium in 2006, best show of my life!

OM45GE - Posted - 04/15/2017:  08:42:34

People make fun of their "dinosaurs" rock, but they can still rock it out.

DeanT - Posted - 04/15/2017:  17:32:55

In their 70's and in better shape than most kids today.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/17/2017:  03:41:31

Amazing considering their lifestyles early on.

DeanT - Posted - 04/17/2017:  09:56:46

I read Keith's biography, they certianly weren't saints... but a lot of it was a put on

OM45GE - Posted - 04/17/2017:  10:07:20

I read that too. Then I lent it to my 90 year old father in law. He had an interesting take on it.

DeanT - Posted - 04/17/2017:  15:46:46

Keith ordered an exercise bike, and grape juice delivered to his room, when they played in Wichita in 2006.

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/17/2017:  18:22:47

Keith's face looks like it can hold 3 days of rain

OM45GE - Posted - 04/18/2017:  02:52:02

I liked the picture in Keith's book with his grandchildren. Who would have thought?

DeanT - Posted - 04/18/2017:  04:38:55

Actually, if he got a hair cut and dressed like a 70something year old man, he would look pretty normal.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/18/2017:  06:16:46

True.

DeanT - Posted - 04/18/2017:  11:14:55

Keith IS rock and roll

OM45GE - Posted - 04/18/2017:  11:28:41

And he sure looks the part.

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/18/2017:  12:18:54

Kudos to him for lasting this long

OM45GE - Posted - 04/18/2017:  12:57:11

He's an incredible rock guitarist.

DeanT - Posted - 04/18/2017:  16:08:02

No one ever talks much about Ronny

OM45GE - Posted - 04/18/2017:  17:29:02

The whole band is extraordinary in my mind. I like the Charlie Watts style of drumming too. Solid as a rock.

DeanT - Posted - 04/19/2017:  02:30:42

I was surprised when they played in Wichita, Mick played guitar too

OM45GE - Posted - 04/19/2017:  02:57:55

My son to be ex-brother in law is a Stones fanatic. He's seen them play over a hundred times and says they still surprise him at shows.

DeanT - Posted - 04/19/2017:  10:04:07

Keith started "She's my little rock and roll" in the wrong key, and corrected it a bar later, and he smiled like only Keith can

OM45GE - Posted - 04/19/2017:  13:57:06

Did he make it seem like that was what he intended to do?

DeanT - Posted - 04/19/2017:  14:32:24

Oh yeah, totally smooth catch. Only a musician would have known, IF they were paying attention.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/20/2017:  03:14:54

All those years of practice paid off. big

DeanT - Posted - 04/20/2017:  06:25:57

I think that's one of my favorite things about seeing them live. As big as they are and as huge as their concerts are, they are still not perfect, and don't pretend to be. It's like a bar band jamming their asses off to 30K people. And they still love doing it. I went to Willie Nelson a few years ago, and you could tell he didn't give a rat's ass about it, and could have cared less to be there or not.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/20/2017:  07:24:05

I didn't like the shows they've done that were heavy on the pyrotechnics and special effects. It's a lot more fun to see them do as you say - play like a bar band jamming.

DeanT - Posted - 04/20/2017:  16:14:15

When I saw them in 2006, their flame show for Sympathy for the Devil raised the temps in the stadium 20 degrees!

OM45GE - Posted - 04/21/2017:  03:19:50

They've cut back on permits for indoor pyrotechnics I this area since the 2003 fire at The Station club in Rhode Island killed 100 people. The band Great White was playing and their pyrotechnics set insulation on fire.

DeanT - Posted - 04/21/2017:  04:39:37

Once Bitten Twice Shy!!!

OM45GE - Posted - 04/22/2017:  10:25:16

That was a sad affair all around. There were exit doors locked, the insulation they had used was flammable, they used outdoor pyrotechnics, too many people in the building.

DeanT - Posted - 04/22/2017:  12:57:45

I think I remember some video, where the flames reached the ceiling, awful

My best friend and I went to one of my favorite music stores this weekend - The Music Emporium. The place is filled with new and used guitars, banjos and mandolins. Almost everything is out for  customers to play. Brad bought a new mandolin.

I haven't been to a local music store in several years... I miss the jams we used to have there with folks we didn't even know...

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/24/2017:  11:59:46

I like Intermountain Guitar and Banjo in Salt Lake City. It's all dusty and well-worn, with cases piled everywhere - lots of old Martins, Gibsons, and banjos. The guitar guy is humorously grumpy, with a world-weary attitude. He sold me my ODE and said he was glad to get rid of another confounded banjo out of his store. lol.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/24/2017:  13:46:25

There aren't that many "local" music stores left around here. Guitar Centers, Music and Arts and a few small shops hanging on. The Music Emporium is thriving. I think it's because they have a lot of high quality stuff.

DeanT - Posted - 04/24/2017:  17:42:17

We only have two left that I know of, Guitar Center wiped all the other ones out

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/24/2017:  22:27:32

Calgary has a couple of Long and McQuade stores - a national chain. They carry some high end guitars- Taylor, Martin, Gibson, Godin. A few Gold Tone banjos.

Guitarworks has 3 stores,,,mostly a local chain. One guy has a vintage and high-end home shop, by appointment only. The odd mom&apop store hanging on.

My only problem with The Music Emporium is what it does to my Guitar Acquisition Syndrome. This time it was a sweet Martin 00-42 cutaway in Koa and a gorgeous Damian Probett Rocket III electric. I still may go back for the Probett.

DeanT - Posted - 04/25/2017:  05:41:45

The only thing that keeps one of our local music stores going, is a contract to service the school's band instruments.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/25/2017:  07:55:31

We have a small local store that does the same. He makes a lot of his income from instrument rentals and band supplies. I am the uniform coordinator for my son's high school marching band. I buy their shoes from this guy just to keep him going. That said, he doesn't have any decent guitars or banjos.
