looks like open carry in Texas is going through, with a concealed carry permit, kinda don't make much sence to have a concealed permit for open carry

OM45GE - Posted - 03/27/2015:  13:57:42

Are there any places that won't allow open carry but where you could carry concealed?

dat - Posted - 03/27/2015:  14:21:32

probably so,   I haven't read into the proposed changes yet,    I'll read more when/ if it actually goes through

DeanT - Posted - 03/27/2015:  15:20:46

We've always had open carry in Kansas for legal gun owners. But a permit needed for concealed carry. Soon no permit will be needed for either. Must be 21, and yes, they do a background check. It was done in several minutes on the store computer. This is what I got. Actually it's for my lovely wife, I already have my own revolver.

I like it. Want one myself.

When I was a teenager someone broke into a bunch of cars in our neighborhood.  Like ten or so in a night.  They mostly got loose change and maybe a box of tapes here and there. One of our neighbors was muttering that they stole less than two dollars of change but it cost him several hundred to fix the door they'd forced. He said he'd rather just leave the car unlocked and let them help themselves than have to deal with the broken door.

A few years ago someone smashed the driver's side window and stole a tote bag of maps that were ten years old and a tool kit I'd gotten five years earlier from Kmart for $15. I think they saw the tote and thought it was a purse. Insurance covered the window (although I didn't bother filing a claim for the maps or tool kit) but it was still a hassle to get it fixed.

Plus a couple of the maps and the toolkit had some sentimental value.

The growing trend in the city is homes getting broken into during the day when people are at work. Where things go bad is when people are home, or come home in the middle of the robbery. Being retired, and living on a street where only the people that live here need to come down the road... we see an awful lot of strange traffic casing the neighborhood. We all have dogs, and we are all well armed. 6 out of the 8 people on my street are retired, so eyes and ears are always watching and listening, taking down tags, and snapping photos. A worse trend is the bad guys getting further out in the suburbs, where the folks are not only much richer, but a lot less prepared.

dat - Posted - 03/28/2015:  08:50:49

more of a reason that it's good to have a dog

OM45GE - Posted - 03/28/2015:  10:40:30

I work from home most days and there are a few others in the neighborhood who do as well. There are also several retirees, including my next door neighbor who was an FBI agent. We let each other know if we're going to be away and keep an eye on each other's houses. It doesn't guarantee anything but it makes me feel better.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/28/2015:  11:49:41

My dad had a student whose husband was a professional burglar.  He said all else being equal, he would break into a house without a dog before going into one with a dog.  But if all the houses had dogs, or there was something in particular he wanted in a house with a dog, he was willing to break in to a house with a dog.  If the dog got aggressive he'd just kill it.  My interpretation of that is the best plan is to have a noisy but not particularly aggressive dog.  Their barking will drive off casual break ins but their friendliness might save their lives.

He also used to really love July 4th as a break in day.  Lots of people go outside to watch fireworks but leave the windows open. Of course, that was 30+ years ago.  With central air being more common I don't know that you'd find that many open windows nowadats.

I get angry just thinking about people stealing from others.  I've worked my ass off my whole life to make a home for my family. The idea of some slimeball walking off with it makes my blood boil.

America's most Wanted did a special several years ago about crime prevention, and they said the #1 deterrent was a barking dog.

OM45GE - Posted - 03/29/2015:  12:46:23

Got that covered.  Little would they know he just wants to play.

DeanT - Posted - 03/29/2015:  14:30:46

Mine just want to see if you have treats...

chuckv97 - Posted - 03/29/2015:  15:08:07

I have a CD of a barking dog , but kind of annoying to play it all night long....

DeanT - Posted - 03/29/2015:  16:04:20

Just use a motion sensor for your CD player...

One of my good friends used to train attack and guard dogs. One of the things he trained them to do was bite anyone who offered them food other than in their dish.

Geese can be nasty critters.

Our birds go nuts if someone turns a light on at night

OM45GE - Posted - 03/30/2015:  13:52:46

My parents had a Canada Goose that had a broken wing and couldn't fly and lived in the little mud pond behind the house. It would chase strangers out of the yard. If you didn't move fast enough it would bite your butt. Finally got hit by a car and everyone but my step mom was relieved.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/30/2015:  15:35:09

My smaller dog is part beagle, so he's got a big bark.  But when he was an only dog he would never bark.  I was on the phone with my parents once when someone walked through my front door and after my mom was like, "I didn't even hear Colby bark!". I said, " That's because he didn't." When I went to visit my folks, he'd bark all the time.  But they had a dog.  Now that I've got a second dog, he barks.

(The guy who came into the apartment was, I think, looking for my neighbors and got confused which door was theirs.  He looked very confused and left.  The door was unlocked because I was doing laundry and running back and forth to the laundry room.)

DeanT - Posted - 03/30/2015:  16:47:14

Our greyhounds didn't use to bark much. Then we got a Shih-Tzu. All it takes is a little spark to start the fire... now they bark all the time.

OM45GE - Posted - 03/31/2015:  04:04:04

Sometimes there's no logic to what will set Toby off. He's jumped up out of a sound sleep in the middle of the night barking to wake the dead. I levitate out of bed to find nothing. Other times he'll sleep through someone ringing the doorbell.

I've always contended that animals live in a different universe. Especially cats.

Our cat Frets is always two or three phases away from the moment. Like he lives 3 seconds from now

I've seen things from a parallel universe before, it took a lot of Jim Beam, but I did it

I've been there too! I hated the hangover universe

Sassybanjo - Posted - 04/01/2015:  20:08:32

I had 3 small margarettas the other night and was awakened by a horrable hangover! Back in the day I was proud i could hold my own but not anymore !!

I don't miss the hangovers! But then there's always the hair of the dog!

Being bad isn't as easy as it used to be.

dat - Posted - 04/02/2015:  06:49:23

it's a lot cheaper, if I drink now, a couple of beers and I'm done,   I used to drink 'till I was out of beer or out of money, or both

Edited by - dat on 04/02/2015 06:50:19

OM45GE - Posted - 04/02/2015:  07:01:19

Definitely cheaper.  A case of beer or bottle of whiskey didn't last long around my house back in the day. Now they seem to last forever.

dat - Posted - 04/02/2015:  07:28:36

I have a bottle of single barrel jack d that I've had for about a year, my brother brought it last time he visited and it's sat there since.   I do like to try different beers every once in a while though,   I got a six pack of Southern Pecan that was pretty good

OM45GE - Posted - 04/02/2015:  08:21:59

I do like a beer now and then but it's usually when I go out to eat. I have a 12 pack of Bass Ale that has been I the fridge for about a month. Maybe I'll have one tonight.

dat - Posted - 04/02/2015:  08:35:58

if you have the bass, gut some guiness and have a black and tan

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 04/02/2015:  13:34:11

I've never liked beer.  People are always telling me "there's lots of different beers out there, there's bound to be something you'll like" but honestly I get tired of pouring money down the drain.

I Like Beer

In some of my songs i have casually mentioned

The fact that i like to drink beer

This little song is more to the point

Roll out the barrel and lend me your ears

(Chorus:)

I like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow

I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)

Whiskey's too rough, champagne costs too much, vodka puts my mouth in gear

This little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact i like beer

(he likes beer)

My wife often frowns when we're out on the town

And i'm wearing a suit and a tie

She's sipping vermouth and she thinks i'm uncouth

When i yell as the waiter goes by

(Chorus)

Last night i dreamed that i passed from the scene

And i went to a place so sublime

Aw, the water was clear and tasted like beer

Then they turned it all into wine

I like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow

I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)

Whiskey's too rough, champagne costs too much, and vodka puts my mouth in gear

Aw, this little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact i love beer

(yes, he likes beer)

being drunk in a bar was fun,.   I skidded my flatbottom boat up into the back doors of a local beer joint here when the river water was up high enough, seemed fun at the time
