Ma and Pa Kettle had it figured

OM45GE - Posted - 01/13/2016:  10:48:43

And all without a calculator!

dmiller - Posted - 01/13/2016:  11:03:45

Thats where common core math evolved from!

dat - Posted - 01/13/2016:  12:40:06

I thought this was interesting

OM45GE - Posted - 01/13/2016:  14:03:30

That's really cool

dat - Posted - 01/13/2016:  14:07:08

still faster to actually multiply, but it's cool that it works

dmiller - Posted - 01/13/2016:  18:35:33

Uff da!  I've seen that "draw the lines to multiply" before, but I'd forgotten all about that method.  As bad as I am at math - - - I'll stick with how they taught me in the Catholic Parochial school.  The nuns treated us pretty good, except for one who had that wooden ruler(and knew how to use it) for "discipline".

OM45GE - Posted - 01/14/2016:  03:25:22

When the video ended there were a lot of similar neat math tricks. I spent about an hour messing around with it.

DeanT - Posted - 01/14/2016:  04:44:39

None of the math tricks worked with my lotto picks last night...

OM45GE - Posted - 01/14/2016:  05:11:08

I hit no numbers at all.

dat - Posted - 01/14/2016:  05:51:52

I didn't get any numbers either, may be I should have bought a ticket

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/14/2016:  06:35:15

I still have some scratch tickets I got for Christmas that I haven't checked yet. Waiting for the "right" feeling........oh no, I'm not superstitious (or weird)

dat - Posted - 01/14/2016:  06:36:56

I might buy a ticket this next week, a lot less people buying then, I might have a better chance to win

OM45GE - Posted - 01/14/2016:  17:46:14

Unfortunately, the only way to improve the odds is to buy more tickets and you would have to buy so many tickets to improve the odds significantly that you would probably lose money even if you did win.

DeanT - Posted - 01/15/2016:  05:54:25

it would only cost $585,000,000 to buy all the number combinations for power ball

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/15/2016:  06:07:03

Maybe the bank would give me a loan for that

dat - Posted - 01/15/2016:  07:26:42

if I had that I would pay off my house and save the rest for taxes

DeanT - Posted - 01/15/2016:  09:50:26

That would buy a lot of beer and cigarettes

dat - Posted - 01/15/2016:  10:08:24

have you priced cigarettes?   I picked up a pack for a guy here at work a week or so ago when I went to lunch, $7.21 for a pack and he smokes about a pack and a half a day

So if you won $1.5 billion and took the lump sum payment of around, $950,000,000, after taxes you would lose money. If three winning tickets were sold, you would basically be screwed.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/15/2016:  16:59:56

Not a good investment

DeanT - Posted - 01/15/2016:  17:57:13

I remember when cigs were less than $10 a carton

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/15/2016:  18:24:48

Back in school, guys would steal some from their parents and sell'em for 2 cents apiece.

dmiller - Posted - 01/15/2016:  18:56:04

I had my first cigarettes back in 9th grade.  Cigarettes sold for 25¢ a pack.  That was around 1965 and the brand my friends and I smoked was Tareyton.  They were the folks who had those - - I'd rather fight than switch! commercials.  I just passed my 2nd anniversary (last week) of finally quitting for good.  American Spirit was the brand I'd been smoking for the previous 4 or 5 years and they're costing $10.45 (these days) per pack here in Minnesota.

DeanT - Posted - 01/15/2016:  19:44:17

Congratulations on quitting! My wife just went over her one year anniversary! I quit in Sept. 2006, when the BHO had the great smokeout (remember Jammer?) I think I was the only one from that thread who made it. Now I'm running marathons, life is sure interesting.

dmiller - Posted - 01/15/2016:  20:30:43

Thanks for the congrats, Dean.  I've gotta admit - - there ain't a daggone day that goes by that I don't want to cave in and buy a pack of American Spirit cigs and an light up like I used to.  The ONLY thing that has kept me "on track" is that I quit on the 8th of January in 2014, 200 years after the "Battle of New Orleans" .

Thats the song set to the tune of The 8th of January,  but you probably knew that already.  I know I'm "weird" - - but having the dates of 1/8/1814 and 1/8/2014 coincide for two important events (one past and one present) gives me the extra mental strength that I've needed to shake this monkey off of my back (successfully) for  the past couple of years, and hopefully forever.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/15/2016:  21:54:21

Congrats you guys. I quit about 16 years ago, but rarely get cravings. My ex died from esophageal cancer from smoking - she was only 50. We are playing with house (God's) money. 😊

DeanT - Posted - 01/16/2016:  06:11:46

Now that is one cool motivational way to stay a non-smoker! For me, just the memory of my first band's bass player laying in his coffin at the age of 59 is enough for me. But I'm in the still craving club... when I'm on my death bed, I'm going to have someone sneak me a pack of Marlboros and a bottle of Jim Beam.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/16/2016:  08:00:09

Ah, the siren song of tobacco. Every once in a while I get a hankering and I quit over 45 years ago.

DeanT - Posted - 01/16/2016:  11:45:20

I always want a smoke when something sucky happens... like when my car engine blew...

OM45GE - Posted - 01/16/2016:  11:50:34

I've probably smoked a pack of cigarettes since I quit, usually when I was talking with a friend and he lit up. I still have an occasional cigar - real occasional, the last one was about three years ago.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/16/2016:  13:29:52

My Dad smoked cigarettes and cigars, but claimed he never inhaled - he called it drawing into your lungs. He'd have a pack of smokes laying on the dash against the windshield for months, then light one up and it'd be so dry half the damn tobacco would fall out. He'd have this big flame at first cuz the paper would burn. lol

OM45GE - Posted - 01/17/2016:  07:29:06

I love the smell of pipes and cigars.

DeanT - Posted - 01/17/2016:  13:29:59

I love the smell of whiskey and cigarettes.

dmiller - Posted - 01/17/2016:  14:13:16

I used to smoke a pipe back around 35 years ago, and I had a few "exotic" ones.  I had a friend (from St. Louis) who stayed the night here at my house back in 1980 or so, when he was in the area for a canoe trip with his son.  He saw my pipes and he also saw a Leinenkugel beer hat that I had. He offered to trade me (even up) a Ben Wade (very expensive) custom pipe for that Leinenkugel (very cheap) baseball cap.  I thought he was nuts and told him he could buy a hat like that for 10 bucks, but he insisted.  So he left here with the hat, and left that very nice pipe behind.  I don't have any pipes here anymore, and I'm not sure where they went.

Lonnie (my friend from St. Louis) also had a signed 1924 Lloyd Loar Gibson F-5 mandolin with him when he visited here.  He took it with him on that canoe trip, even though I offered to "babysit it" for him while he was camping.  He just smiled and said "no".  A couple of years later he traded that (signed) F-5 Loar for a Gilchrist mandolin.  Perhaps I should have offered him the ball cap for his mandolin, instead of the pipe, eh?  evil

DeanT - Posted - 01/17/2016:  15:01:55

two hats for the Mandolin!

dat - Posted - 01/18/2016:  06:08:38

I could eat a whole can of copenhagen right now, even though it's been several years since I quit, I still think about it every day,  but just once a day. usually right after I wake up until about the time I go to bed

DeanT - Posted - 01/18/2016:  09:06:03

I'm the same way about whiskey... and it's been over 25 years!

dat - Posted - 01/18/2016:  09:09:10

amazing how strong of a hold things can have on somebody

OM45GE - Posted - 01/18/2016:  09:44:15

Music has a strong hold on me. I guess it's more of an obsession than an addiction but I don't like going a day without playing.

dat - Posted - 01/18/2016:  10:11:57

I wish I had picked music when I was much younger, my learning curve is more stubborn than it used to be, I have to actually pay attention now to get over my know it all attitude I grew into for a while

DeanT - Posted - 01/18/2016:  12:42:52

I'm actually burned out on music, but gotta keep at it to keep my play money coming...

dat - Posted - 01/18/2016:  13:00:54

I'm kinda burned out on a lot of things that used to be fun, I still enjoy doing things but things are more expensive to do, even the cheap stuff that we used to do when we had extra money costs a lot now, taking the 14 ft jon boat to the river costs a hundred bucks now by the time we get gas for the truck, oil  and gas for the boat, samich stuff and a few bottles of water.

woodworking since the hard wood store around here closed getting some decent wood takes a long drive to Houston or Huntsville, or pay a lot in shipping, seems like the cheap stuff aint cheap no more

OM45GE - Posted - 01/18/2016:  13:25:29

Boy, I hope I don't get burned out on music. I can't imagine life without it. Maybe it's because I'm not trying to make money at it anymore. If I gig, it's great but I'm really just enjoying learning new stuff and getting better at playing.

dat - Posted - 01/18/2016:  15:06:08

I haven't picked up my banjo in about 4 or 5 months now,   I have made a new rim out of maple and rosewood, looking for the right chunk of maple for the neck now, may be after I get that one built I mat start to get excited about it again

if I don't find the right one, I may have a rim to give away

When my band calls it quits (my band mates are considerably older than me too) some day, my banjo is going in it's case, and I may never touch it again. I had had enough a couple years ago.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/18/2016:  17:34:38

Going back to banjo is fun again - I had burned out on it in the mid 80's. Jams are fun, like this one on Saturday. Nobody cares about mistakes or train wrecks,,it's all just easy going fun.

DeanT - Posted - 01/18/2016:  17:36:34

Now that looks like fun

dmiller - Posted - 01/18/2016:  20:11:52

This is pretty much the only jam I get involved with (these days).  I bring the fiddle and mandolin only.

These folks kind of "frown on" 5 string resonated banjos, and fingerpicks.

I'm on the mandolin there.  I helped start this jam back in 1993.

It's a good'un, and it happens every Thursday night.  cool
