My grandfather didn't like cars and never drove one and wouldn't let grandmother drive. He died in 1953 and she promptly went out and bought a car. I don't think she ever drove over 30 mph.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/16/2017:  16:48:52

30 mph in 1920 was a big,big deal

OM45GE - Posted - 01/16/2017:  16:59:32

She was still driving 30 in the 1960's. Highway, driveway, back road, parking lot or sidewalk, 30.

DeanT - Posted - 01/16/2017:  17:22:05

My old VW bug could barely make it to 30

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/16/2017:  18:28:43

My Dad got his driver's licence in the 1920's and all he had to do was go to the transportation office, pay a couple of bucks and they issued him a licence - no test, nothing.

DeanT - Posted - 01/17/2017:  05:29:02

I haven't taken a test in Kansas in longer than I can remember. All we have to do is pass the eye test every 4 years.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/17/2017:  07:30:54

I used to have a hazardous material endorsement on my commercial license and had to take a test whenever I renewed. It was an expensive endorsement so I let it lapse years ago.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/17/2017:  08:36:12

I never haul hazmat anymore, but in the past we just had a short seminar and test with the company ,then they would issue the permit card.
I'm over 65 so I have to renew my class 1 licence every year - no test,, just a medical. But last spring after the winter off the company put me through a total review test and a driving test.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/17/2017:  11:32:20

Is the annual renewal a Canadian requirement? I'm over 65 as well and don't have to renew yearly.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/17/2017:  11:36:45

Yep, but every province has different requirements. In Ontario you have to do a driving test every year or two (can't quite remember). In Alberta only the medical ($120) and card renewal ($75).

DeanT - Posted - 01/17/2017:  13:25:42

medical? Never heard of that for a drivers license!

OM45GE - Posted - 01/17/2017:  13:33:12

Yes, commercial drivers have to get physicals every year. If you don't, they downgrade the license to a regular automobile license.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/17/2017:  13:51:36

There are drivers that get diagnosed with sleep apnea, heart murmurs ,diabetes, etc. and they get refused renewal of their licence until they're on medication or other medical remedy and get signed off by a doctor approved by the DOT and/or FMCSA.

DeanT - Posted - 01/17/2017:  16:39:43

I've never had a commercial license...

OM45GE - Posted - 01/18/2017:  03:20:54

I have sleep apnea and have to submit a readout from my CPAP machine showing I use it regularly.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/18/2017:  12:58:08

Sleep management is the most important issue for me driving commercially. I learned to take short naps.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/18/2017:  14:25:15

I never really felt like I got enough sleep when I was driving.

DeanT - Posted - 01/18/2017:  15:10:36

I don't know how you guys do it, I can barely make it home from a gig without wanting to fall asleep

OM45GE - Posted - 01/19/2017:  02:40:08

Well, I don't do it any more. I doubt I could run they way I used to back then.

DeanT - Posted - 01/19/2017:  06:17:25

now running is something I can do!

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/19/2017:  08:21:21

I think in whatever we do for a while that we build up stamina for it.

DeanT - Posted - 01/19/2017:  12:53:53

like drinking coffee?

OM45GE - Posted - 01/19/2017:  13:01:39

I didn't drink much coffee when I was driving over the road. I didn't want to have to stop to pee.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/19/2017:  13:31:31

Coffees last me 5 hours..I don't mind cold coffee. I take ginseng and maca sometimes for energy.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/19/2017:  14:47:51

Some of drivers used amphetamines back then. I never did.

DeanT - Posted - 01/19/2017:  16:40:55

now I'm thirsty! Time to fire up the Kurig

OM45GE - Posted - 01/20/2017:  02:51:57

I had a great morning skiing yesterday. Going again today.

dmiller - Posted - 01/20/2017:  08:30:04

I just sold my X-C skiis to a co-worker last week.  They were a pair of wooden Bonna 1800's made in Norway that I bought back in 1975.  I honestly don't remember the last time I used them, but it was easily 25 or more years ago.  I used to ski a lot back in the day, but those days are long gone.

DeanT - Posted - 01/20/2017:  10:40:30

I've still never snow skied..

OM45GE - Posted - 01/20/2017:  10:56:34

Another great morning on the slopes. It's very high on my favorite things to do list.

DeanT - Posted - 01/20/2017:  13:06:46

My favorite thing to do is go running. I know, I'm twisted...

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/20/2017:  13:20:26

Have fun,Bill. I'm better (or was) at running than skiing

OM45GE - Posted - 01/20/2017:  13:53:49

I loved running until my knees gave out. I still miss it. With the brace I wear I can still hike, ski and walk but the impact of running is too much.

DeanT - Posted - 01/20/2017:  14:18:10

How about swimming? I love swimming too, and do 2 miles in the pool every other day

OM45GE - Posted - 01/20/2017:  15:58:40

I used to swim too until I tore my rotator cuff. sad

My routine used to be run 5 miles to the club, swim 1 1/4 miles, do some weight work, shower and get a ride home with my wife. I'd do that three times a week and bike ride three other days.  One day off. The good old days.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/20/2017:  16:02:22

It gets tougher as we age. I exercise, but now I feel like I don't want to wear out. (actually I'm lazier)

DeanT - Posted - 01/20/2017:  17:17:23

I've kind of gone the opposite. Time is running out, so I gotta hit it as hard as I can

OM45GE - Posted - 01/20/2017:  18:46:30

Six miles walking and three hours skiing today.

DeanT - Posted - 01/20/2017:  19:08:48

now that's a good workout!

dmiller - Posted - 01/20/2017:  19:16:35

My ex and I used to belong to the local YMCA back in the early 80's.  I ran a bit back then, but she ran a lot.  She wrecked one of her knees doing a marathon so she decided to switch to swimming -- thus the YMCA membership and use of it's pool.  I used to be really strong, and could easily lift a lot of weight with either hand with no problems,  BUT- - - I here to tell you that swimming even 2 or 3 laps in the Y's pool was more than my arms could take!  Swimming laps was a humbling experience for me.

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/20/2017:  22:57:53

Free style is tough for me - my shoulders are gimpy. I do a crawl/breast stroke and on my back.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/21/2017:  03:07:45

I also get a workout jumping to conclusions. big

DeanT - Posted - 01/21/2017:  05:31:56

I swim at the pool on the Air Force Base. I just reached 100 miles last week

chuckv97 - Posted - 01/21/2017:  07:32:20

Nice work, Dean.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/21/2017:  09:18:00

That is great.

DeanT - Posted - 01/21/2017:  11:01:21

Thanks! I'm really starting to like swimming, you don't get so beat up like running

OM45GE - Posted - 01/21/2017:  11:34:08

It's a great way to workout. Low impact and excellent exercise. Just take care of your shoulders and watch your technique. It's easy to get over use injuries when you build up distance.

DeanT - Posted - 01/21/2017:  16:05:07

I'm hanging in there pretty good at 2 miles everyother day. On the other side of the pool is the senior water aerobics class, my wife is in that. It's pretty cool, something we can do together

OM45GE - Posted - 01/21/2017:  18:55:03

Two miles is really good.

DeanT - Posted - 01/22/2017:  06:53:38

I take it pretty easy, at just under a minute per 100 yards
