Guitar notation is more involved than most other instruments. They need to show some circled numbers underneath or above the staff to signify which string if it's ambiguous. They also need to show barre positions. And some show p,i, m, a for thumb, index, middle ,and ring fingers of the plucking hand.

Agreed, but not all notation shows any of that. I like to have both tab an notation for a complex piece. I often rearrange things to suit my tastes and knowing pitch, timing, etc. is helpful.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/09/2016:  18:21:09

Yes Bill, it's time all guitar music written in standard notation is complete with all the necessary symbols. I've seen those books (I think Alfred Publctns and some Hal Leonard are guilty of that) and it's frustrating.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/09/2016:  18:30:10

On the other hand, I've learned tune I had never heard performed from tab and been shocked by how different what I came up with was from the original when I finally heard it.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/09/2016:  18:34:31

I like that, because you can put your own spin on it without any influence of a recording.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/09/2016:  18:57:21

True.

dat - Posted - 09/12/2016:  09:55:36

if I've never heard a song, there wouldn't be any resemblance at all in what I came up with and what it's supposed to be

DeanT - Posted - 09/12/2016:  10:07:46

That happens to me sometimes, even when I hear the song!

dat - Posted - 09/12/2016:  10:39:33

I was working through a song a while back, and my brides aunt had come to visit, she stuck her head in the room I was in and asked if I was learning how to play chinese music, it was pretty slow boing, poing, ping as I was figuring it out

DeanT - Posted - 09/12/2016:  16:14:13

That's why I use my electric guitar (strung 5 strings and banjo tuned) to figure out new songs :)

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/12/2016:  22:32:33

I use the ol' mute method ...I can still hear the pitches of the notes, but real quiet.

DeanT - Posted - 09/13/2016:  04:35:03

clothes pins make my banjo sound like a reso guitar, it's pretty cool...

dat - Posted - 09/13/2016:  10:24:39

does that change the tuning much?

DeanT - Posted - 09/13/2016:  11:02:53

not at all

dat - Posted - 09/14/2016:  07:20:33

my bride may like fer me to use some clothes pins

dmiller - Posted - 09/14/2016:  07:56:35

The clothes pins work good, but its hard (for me), to position my picking hand around them.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/14/2016:  08:39:53

I position my hand forward a bit

OM45GE - Posted - 09/15/2016:  02:48:01

Where do you put the clothes pins? I've never tried that.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/15/2016:  10:49:52

Check my photo above.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/15/2016:  13:08:08

ohhhhh. I missed the clothespins when I failed to enlarge the photo. I'll have to try that. I wonder where I can find some clothespins. cool

DeanT - Posted - 09/15/2016:  15:58:19

They are on your bike frame, holding the baseball cards in the spokes...

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/15/2016:  17:01:28

Thanks Chuck, now I've learned the hard way that petty theft, trespassing and criminal mischief in the nighttime is not thought of kindly by the police.

dat - Posted - 09/16/2016:  06:25:52

clothes pins today are made from a soft wood that rots quick if left on the clothes line,  some of my grandmothers clothes pins that never came inside for years are still holding up and solid, where the new ones rot quick

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/16/2016:  07:22:54

I think clothes lines are pretty scarce these days.

dat - Posted - 09/16/2016:  07:39:30

yeah, my bride doesn't care for bird poop on clean sheets.

we have a drier, but she likes to hang the sheets, sometimes towels too

DeanT - Posted - 09/16/2016:  09:42:29

I hate the plastic ones that get brittle and break

dat - Posted - 09/16/2016:  13:48:31

do they still make the old slotted push on style

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/16/2016:  14:20:51

Sheets and pillow cases always smelled good and fresh if dried on the line outside

DeanT - Posted - 09/16/2016:  15:02:39

I haven't had air dried clothes since I left home... that was a Loooong time ago.

dat - Posted - 09/16/2016:  15:12:59

my grandmother used a wringer washer and dried all her clothes on the line,  her bathroom was an add on off the back porch, no heat, walk through a screened porch to get to it, I remember in the winter taking a shower then getting out in the cold and drying off with a stiff line dried cold towel,

good memories even though they sound bad

I air dry my laundry but I use drying racks, not a line.

dat - Posted - 09/17/2016:  06:52:57

All our dirty laundry gets aired out at the family reunions

DeanT - Posted - 09/17/2016:  07:38:43

Kick em when their up, kick em when their down, kick em where they sit, kick em all around

dat - Posted - 09/17/2016:  10:30:21

DeanT - Posted - 09/17/2016:  15:28:12

I can't even remember who did it! I'm thinking Glen Fry?

dmiller - Posted - 09/17/2016:  16:14:09

Don Henley.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/17/2016:  19:16:40

Yup. Strange lyrics if you listen to them all.

DeanT - Posted - 09/18/2016:  15:57:23

dirty little secrets, dirty little lies, she can tell you about the plane crash, with a gleam in her eye.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/18/2016:  17:21:26

I like a well written song.

DeanT - Posted - 09/19/2016:  04:42:10

Bob Seger is my favorite song writer. Beautiful Looser, Against the Wind, etc...

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/19/2016:  05:40:11

Being Canadian ,Gordon Lightfoot is my all time favourite.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/19/2016:  06:04:43

There are a lot of great ones that I like. Iris Dement, Shawn Colvin, Robert Earl Keen, Richard Thompson, John Hiatt...

When I was a kid my folks had a Tom Paxton record I listened to over and over.  Somewhere along the way I realized that he wrote the songs.  That he had deliberately sat down and thought of those words, in that order, with that music, and created all those songs.  I was totally amazed by that.

I know there are tons of really good song writers out there, but there was something about that realization that made Tom Paxton like a god to me.  He's still the first person I think of when people talk about good song writers.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/19/2016:  11:20:23

Tom Paxton is one of my favorites as well. It's hard to pick one of his many incredible songs, but "Last Thing On My Mind" astounded me the first time I heard it and it remains on the top of my best tunes list.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/19/2016:  12:47:40

I had a good album of Tom's ...had a great tune on it called "When You Get Your Ticket". Super fingerpicking guitar on that one.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/20/2016:  02:51:02

I have to be careful when I start browsing around in You Tube. Hours can slip away.
