I learned to ride a bicycle on my big brother's with both my legs under the cross bar cuz I was too small to reach the pedals if I sat on the seat

DeanT - Posted - 04/03/2017:  08:54:39

I didn't go that far, but I sat on the top bar with blocks taped to the pedals

dmiller - Posted - 04/03/2017:  09:39:34

I don't remember exactly how I learned to ride a bike, but once I did learn - - I would be out and about the town and neighborhood on it, disappearing from the house every Saturday.  My folks didn't worry about me at all, because they knew I'd be back by supper time.

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/03/2017:  09:40:00

We'd take a can of beans and some bread and head out for long "expeditions"

dmiller - Posted - 04/03/2017:  09:43:49

Those were the days, eh?  Nowdays folks would be charged with "neglect" if that happened.  sad

DeanT - Posted - 04/03/2017:  10:02:48

Yep! We could go anywhere and do anything we wanted, as long as we were home by supper. Most of the summer we were at the pool or beach (lake Michigan)

OM45GE - Posted - 04/04/2017:  03:35:54

Nowadays parents can check in on their kids by mobile phone continuously. I know a lot who have tracker apps on their phones.

DeanT - Posted - 04/04/2017:  06:21:05

a mobile phone would never have survived in my pocket when I was a kid

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/04/2017:  09:12:48

It'd have to be in a steel case with a chain to my belt loop

DeanT - Posted - 04/04/2017:  10:20:39

it would have to be incased in foam or all the falls out of trees...

OM45GE - Posted - 04/04/2017:  15:56:30

I loved climbing trees.

DeanT - Posted - 04/04/2017:  15:59:23

And making treehouses

OM45GE - Posted - 04/04/2017:  16:18:07

Oh yeah.

DeanT - Posted - 04/05/2017:  06:39:07

we also worked when we were kids. I had a paper route and mowed lawns

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/05/2017:  08:29:48

I used to secretly get up at 5:30 am to follow my older sister who had a morning newspaper route (Toronto Globe and Mail). Later I got a Toronto Telegram route, an afternoon paper. Neil Young's father ,Scott, was a sports writer for the Telegram.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/05/2017:  09:57:28

Other than mowing lawns or shoveling driveways, I didn't really work much as a kid. Lazy SOB I guess.

DeanT - Posted - 04/05/2017:  11:37:46

I dumped the papers and mowing at 14 when I got a "real" job at the local bike store.

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/05/2017:  11:50:01

We had a big family - 7 kids- so we were encouraged to get part time and summer jobs to throw a percentage into the family "kitty". Some days in the summer I was really jealous of friends who didn't have to work.

DeanT - Posted - 04/05/2017:  13:55:18

We never had a kitty, I got to keep what I made, and that made me work harder/longer, I was saving up for, and then trying to keep my car going

OM45GE - Posted - 04/05/2017:  14:59:21

I was making money in bands in high school selling a few herbs to my friends.

Hah....you had early entrepreneurial skills

OM45GE - Posted - 04/06/2017:  12:50:33

LOL. I sort of did. The high school I went to freshman year had a dress code requiring ties for the boys and kids would forget them all the time and earn a detention. I brought a bunch of my father's ties in and rented them out from my locker.

DeanT - Posted - 04/06/2017:  17:24:30

Cost for tie = one pint Southern Comfort from your dad's liquor cabinet...

OM45GE - Posted - 04/07/2017:  03:11:13

Dad was a bourbon drinker. 😎

DeanT - Posted - 04/07/2017:  06:08:34

My Dad didn't drink... so I had to rely on friend's dads...

OM45GE - Posted - 04/07/2017:  06:50:41

You got by with a little help from your friends.

DeanT - Posted - 04/07/2017:  08:24:22

And I definitely sang out of tune!

OM45GE - Posted - 04/07/2017:  13:32:32

Some singers have turned that into a style.

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/07/2017:  16:24:25

Yep,,,Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, Neil Young,, Ramblin' Jack Elliott,, etc

OM45GE - Posted - 04/07/2017:  18:22:34

Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen come to mind.

DeanT - Posted - 04/09/2017:  06:24:17

I ran a marathon yesterday, I always forget how sore you are the next day!

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/09/2017:  07:47:33

Get out the horse liniment...

OM45GE - Posted - 04/09/2017:  10:00:24

I think it was P J O'Rourk who said he couldn't drive 26 miles without a pee break so running a marathon was out of the question.

DeanT - Posted - 04/09/2017:  11:41:35

I crossed the finish line and headed straight for the porta-potty!

OM45GE - Posted - 04/09/2017:  15:15:12

I would have headed straight for the first aid tent for some oxygen.

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/09/2017:  16:13:04

Half a mile for me and I'd be dropping

DeanT - Posted - 04/09/2017:  16:28:31

I should get my head examined...

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/09/2017:  16:40:22

It's hard to give up the fun of competition. When I quit playing sports in my mid twenties I got competitive with music , trying to outdo other players. Not the best way to do music

Edited by - chuckv97 on 04/09/2017 16:40:58

DeanT - Posted - 04/09/2017:  20:46:24

It's really interesting, because I'm extremely competitive with my running, but never have been with my music.

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/09/2017:  20:57:22

Well, I play cuz I love music, but when I was younger I think the competitive drive urged me on to practice for hours and hours.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/10/2017:  02:57:31

I used to do finger style guitar contests but it it was mostly to test myself.

DeanT - Posted - 04/10/2017:  05:34:42

I've never been good enough to play contests. Funny because I've been a very employed musician for over 12 years now with over 1600+ gigs on the books. There are people WAY better than me who can't find bands or work in music.

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/10/2017:  06:23:19

Wow, that's a lot of gigs. I just play jams and some retirement homes now, and I'm more relaxed about playing nowadays, although I still like to learn new tunes.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/10/2017:  10:37:59

I do some jams and open mikes and private gigs like musical presentations at libraries. Nothing like 2+ gigs a week for 12 years. You must be good Dean.

DeanT - Posted - 04/10/2017:  14:34:44

from 2009 to 2014 I was in 2 bands. Now just one. Not a lot of banjo players around here, and country music is king, so it's easy to get work. And I don't even sing! But I can keep a solid rhythm, I don't drink, and I can make my banjo fit anything.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/11/2017:  02:38:35

That does look like fun.

DeanT - Posted - 04/11/2017:  06:02:30

Not a lot of bluegrass around here, so a really good bluegrass banjo player would have a hard time working. Whenever we tried bluegrass, that's when everyone would go take their bathroom and smoke breaks.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/12/2017:  02:38:05

We mix in a few BG tunes, but they're not the most popular here either.

DeanT - Posted - 04/12/2017:  09:12:11

I played "Red Solo Cup" more than any other song ever, for about a year.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/12/2017:  10:13:17

I have never played Red Solo Cup. I don't have any plans to either. cool
