Probably.

I wonder how much Willie sold "Crazy" for

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/29/2016:  08:05:04

Not sure about that one,, but I think he sold "Hello Walls" for $50 or something like that.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/29/2016:  12:21:47

That probably seemed like a lot of money at the time.

DeanT - Posted - 12/29/2016:  13:27:26

I wonder if songwriters today can still capitalize like that... there is so freeking much music out there...

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/29/2016:  18:49:44

The music biz is so different today

OM45GE - Posted - 12/30/2016:  04:26:00

The internet changed the rules profoundly, but I wonder if the success pyramid is any different. There still seems to be the elite few who make piles of money, the working musicians who grind out a living and the vast majority of players who make little or nothing.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/30/2016:  08:26:56

Hopefully your son will find a way to make a comfortable living, and more, Bill.

DeanT - Posted - 12/30/2016:  10:00:25

wasn't it Taylor Swift that was "discovered" because of her My-Space page?

OM45GE - Posted - 12/30/2016:  11:23:43

I have a friend who makes a pretty good living playing trumpet, but he also teaches and manages an agency that puts bands together for gigs (he also plays for them). Right now, Ethan says he would like to teach music at the high school level and gig on the side. I'm fine with whatever path he takes as long as he's happy.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/30/2016:  11:59:56

I had ambitions to be a pro musician in my twenties and gave lessons on the side, at home, at students' homes and at a music store, but I got tired of teaching lessons and I stopped practicing as much as I had earlier so my music stagnated. Plus I think I started playing too late and wasn't totally dedicated all the time. No regrets though, I still enjoy it.

I'm kind of glad I didn't go the pro music route... it would have been hard rock, and I probably wouldn't have survived...

At least not with all your brain cells.

I used up a lot them anyways!

I've got a book of the 50 most popular Stephen Foster songs.  In the preface of the book, it mentions that composers of songs (those days) got paid by how many printed manuscripts of the song were sold.  Foster's annual income occasionally got as high as $1,700.00 and he was always broke.  Two of his most famous songs (Old Folks at Home {Swanee River} and Oh Susanna) were both stolen from him, and he never received any royalties for either of them.

I know an old black guitar player that has an old reel-to-reel original demo copy of Hang-on sloopy. He said his band submitted the song to a record company, and they were turned down. A few weeks later, someone else came out with the song. A total rip-off. I've asked him why he never did anything about it, and he said that's just the way things were back then. I can't prove the validity of the story, but I've heard the tape, and I've known the guy for over 30 years, and I personally believe him.

That happened a lot to old black blues singers. A famous one was "That's All Right, Mama" that Elvis had his first hit with on Sun Records. Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup wrote it but never got a settlement. From Wikipedia....

"Elvis Presley's version was recorded in July 1954. Its catalogue number was Sun 209.[9] The label reads "That's All Right" (omitting "Mama" from the original title), and names the performers as Elvis Presley, Scotty and Bill.[10] Arthur Crudup was credited as the composer on the label of Presley's single, but even after legal battles into the 1970s, was reportedly never paid royalties. An out-of-court settlement was supposed to pay Crudup an estimated $60,000 in back royalties, but never materialized.[11][12] Crudup had used lines in his song that had been present in earlier blues recordings, including Blind Lemon Jefferson's 1926 song "That Black Snake Moan".[12]

I don't remember the musicians involve, but they were well known early rockers. One had written a song, played it for a few people and booked studio time to record it. When the guitarist he hired for the session heard the run through he said he had just recorded the song with someone else down the hall.

DeanT - Posted - 12/31/2016:  06:31:21

Led Zeppelin just went through court on Stairway to Heaven... someone else claimed they stole it from them...

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/31/2016:  08:41:50

Then the one I thought Dave Van Ronk got stiffed on..House of the Rising Sun,, where Dylan used his different arrangement on his first album without asking ,,the Animals heard it and the rest is history.

"I had learned it sometime in the 1950s, from a recording by Hally Wood, the Texas singer and collector, who had got it from an Alan Lomax field recording by a Kentucky woman named Georgia Turner. I put a different spin on it by altering the chords and using a bass line that descended in half steps—a common enough progression in jazz, but unusual among folksingers. By the early 1960s, the song had become one of my signature pieces, and I could hardly get off the stage without doing it."[12]. -- from a Van Ronk interview. I guess he's referring to the A - G - F# - F - E bass line,, using the G bass against the C chord.

  • Alan Price was the only band member given credit for arranging the track, meaning he is paid almost all the royalties. Their record company told the other members that there was not enough room to list them as arrangers.

  • The organ solo was inspired by jazzman Jimmy Smith's hit "Walk on the Wild Side." Alan Price performed the solo on a Vox Continental.

I'd heard the story about Van Rock. I'm sure there are a lot of stories like that. I bet comedians get ripped off a lot too.

My son was taking care of a friend's two cats at their house while they family was away last week. Pound for pound, those cats produce a lot more poop 💩 than Toby the Springer.

DeanT - Posted - 01/01/2017:  06:06:42

I'm catless right now for the first time in my adult life... my last one died last month. It is kind of nice not to have to deal with the litter box. But I miss the dork

OM45GE - Posted - 01/01/2017:  07:59:55

I'll stick with dogs.

cats with dogs are the most fun...

OM45GE - Posted - 01/01/2017:  16:30:24

I hate litter boxes and, around here, outdoor cats are called "coyote chow".

DeanT - Posted - 01/01/2017:  16:34:18

I don't mind our neighborhood outdoor cats... they do a fine job of keeping the skunks and squirrels away. We have two brother cats who have been patrolling our neighborhood for at least 5 years, bad ass and tough as nails. Our neighbor puts out food and water, and is the only person that can get close to them.

OM45GE - Posted - 01/01/2017:  16:44:14

I have a neighbor with a black truck about the size of a Shetland pony that seems to take care of itself. However, all they found of their other cat was it's tail.

DeanT - Posted - 01/01/2017:  19:00:58

we've had a lot of other cats come and go in the neighborhood... but the brothers rule

OM45GE - Posted - 01/01/2017:  19:32:33

Top Cats huh?

DeanT - Posted - 01/02/2017:  05:50:22

kings of the urban jungle

OM45GE - Posted - 01/02/2017:  06:18:31

There were over 20 turkeys in front of the house. The neighbor's cat was lying very close to them but they seemed to be ignoring each other.

I like watching animals....don't know why they kill each other when they're well fed..,,come to think of it, humans do that too.....

OM45GE - Posted - 01/02/2017:  10:54:34

Well, humans are animals too.

DeanT - Posted - 01/02/2017:  14:41:35

if you think about, every living thing is either predator or prey for something. It really is a sick twisted sinister world of death.
