An offer he couldn't refuse?

DeanT - Posted - 05/12/2014:  23:12:21

I remember the early days of cable TV, one person on the block would pay for it, and everyone else would pirate off his line

OM45GE - Posted - 05/13/2014:  02:55:55

Can't do that anymore.

dat - Posted - 05/13/2014:  05:51:01

now you need to know somebody at the cable company

OM45GE - Posted - 05/13/2014:  06:47:09

Even then it isn't easy. Most of the cable service are "trapped" or controlled at the hub instead of the pole or house. Big Brother is watching and knows what you're watching.

dat - Posted - 05/13/2014:  07:42:51

we haven't had a tv or satalite in the house for several years now, no cable where we live, it has turned out pretty nice without a TV, we play more card and board games and spend more time talking than we did before

DeanT - Posted - 05/13/2014:  08:44:25

Now adays you just use your neighbor's WiFi....

I bet the silence golden.

dat - Posted - 05/13/2014:  11:07:50

they have a couple of 4 wheelers, every once in a while we can hear them through the woods, but it's usually pretty quiot

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/13/2014:  11:48:58

My landlord down in Virginia had a dozen or so cars on the property--mostly MGs, but there was an Austin Healey, a Kreamo bread truck, and a couple of old trucks. Non of the vehicles were in working order. Most were more rust than anything and had duct tape holding the together.

He occasionally would try to get one running and would plug an extension cord into the laundry room and across the yarn to charge the battery. And once he decided he was going to wash his new van at our yard and just rolled out the hose and started working on it. He never seemed to consider that we were the ones paying for the water/electric.

Nice guy.

dat - Posted - 05/13/2014:  12:43:28

OM45GE - Posted - 05/13/2014:  12:47:26

Yep, a real pal. Help you get rid of that pesky beer.

DeanT - Posted - 05/13/2014:  14:56:19

Lucky he didn't get electrocuted by the extension chord while washing his van.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/13/2014:  15:24:24

Talk about poetic justice.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/13/2014:  16:18:09

The property was pretty private and I remember once having, um, a private moment at around 11pm and being startled by noises out in the yard and discovering he'd stopped by to do something with his cars. The shades weren't pulled. I have no idea what he might have seen.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/13/2014:  17:32:01

Nowadays he would have had a cell phone and taken videos.

DeanT - Posted - 05/13/2014:  19:08:58

and it would go viral

OM45GE - Posted - 05/14/2014:  10:44:11

I'll pass too. Although It's hard to see anyone being interested in seeing my sorry butt anyway.

chuckv97 - Posted - 05/14/2014:  10:46:18

Thanks for the tip- I was thinking about selling my body for extra cash. Maybe not......

DeanT - Posted - 05/14/2014:  11:16:20

Ever since I started running marathons, I don't have much left to sell....

OM45GE - Posted - 05/14/2014:  12:12:55

Donating it one step at a time huh?

dat - Posted - 05/14/2014:  13:12:07

DeanT - Posted - 05/14/2014:  15:02:32

yesiree... I'm back to my high school waist (28) and weight (145).

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/14/2014:  17:01:17

They had sugar on clearance at Target tonight. I bought 20 pounds. Thinking about going back for more.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/14/2014:  17:10:18

How long will 20 pounds last you?

DeanT - Posted - 05/14/2014:  23:00:42

My wife thinks I'm crazy for putting sugar on my rice. Brown sugar is even better, MMMmmmmmmm!!!

OM45GE - Posted - 05/15/2014:  04:25:34

I've never tried sugar on rice. I like it completely plain or with whatever I've cooked over it.

DeanT - Posted - 05/15/2014:  05:47:05

I put Sugar on grits too... but don't get caught down south doing that

dat - Posted - 05/15/2014:  05:55:46

I just put gravy or butter on rice, same as grits, just butter,  I do put brown sugar in oatmeal, and in BBQ sauce

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/15/2014:  09:27:25

I use the sugar to make kombucha. The yeast eats most of the sugar. I usually use about 2 cups for each batch and I go through a batch in a week and a half or so. I bought 8 pounds maybe two months ago and I ran out when I was making a batch Monday night. I had to add molasses to have enough sugar for the yeasts.

So I go through a lot of sugar. And tea bags.

dat - Posted - 05/15/2014:  10:00:56

I  had to look that up, never have heard of it

DeanT - Posted - 05/15/2014:  10:29:09

Sounds interesting... doesn't sound like something to drink too much of...

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/15/2014:  10:56:26

I'm a terrible soda addict but, since it has bubbles, kombucha helps me stay away from the soda. It's not 100%, but pretty good. I also think it's improved my digestive system. Similar to apple cider vinegar, but not anywhere near as tart. (Unless you let it brew for a long time. Eventually it basically turns into vinegar.)

Most of the time they talk about only drinking 4oz a day, but I drink way more than that.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/15/2014:  12:20:22

Do you have a good recipe for it?

They have it in some of the Heath food restaurants here in Cambridge and I've tried it. Some was good, others were awful.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/15/2014:  13:36:11

You have to have a scoby to start with, plus some starter kombucha. I bought one and it didn't turn out too well. Then I tried to make one from a bottle of the unflavored Synergy kombucha and it didn't work real well. But then my second attempt I was really persistent about it. I poured the kombucha into a larger glass jar and added a couple of tablespoons of sugar and covered it. I let that sit until I had a scoby starting that was maybe a quarter inch thick. Then I took all that and added it to a larger container with a couple cups of hot sweet tea and let that sit for about another week and a half, until it was starting to smell kind of vinegary. By that point my scoby was pretty big.

Now that I've got the scoby, I usually make about four cups of tea, with about 1 1/2 cups to 2 cups of sugar. Let it cool all the way down to room temp, and then I add it to the existing kombucha with about a quart more water. It's ready in 5-7 days, depending on how warm it is. Mid-spring, when it wasn't hot enough to require AC but not cold enough for my heat to come on, it took closer to 2 weeks to brew.

I have what's called a continuous brew. I have a jar with a spout at the bottom so I can get the kombucha out of the jar easily, and then when it gets low I just add more. Some people use just a big jar and remove the scoby, take most of the kombucha out (leaving a little for starter), put the scoby bake and add more tea. I like the ease of the continuous brew, except I occasionally need to clean out the spout.

When you make a new batch, you get another layer to your scoby, so you can give that to other people so they can start their own. I gave some to a coworker and she's passed some on to friends. If you can get one from someone, that's really the best way to go. I've seen them advertised (for free!) on craigslist.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/15/2014:  15:39:22

Thanks. I may try it. We have a perfect glass jar with a spigot on the bottom

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/15/2014:  16:45:58

There's lots of info on the web about how to make it.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/15/2014:  17:49:56

I've just started looking at some of it. You're not kidding that there's a lot.

chuckv97 - Posted - 05/15/2014:  18:49:58

Nevah hoid o' it, but I like apple cider vinegar, with a spoonful of honey chaser- gives me spine chills.

DeanT - Posted - 05/15/2014:  18:54:25

gosh, I'm just a boring ice tea guy...

ErikH - Posted - 05/16/2014:  02:27:07

I recently tried brewing my own beer.  I have a batch in bottles right now that's about a week away from trying out.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/16/2014:  04:54:25

Let us know if you need help with the testing.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/16/2014:  05:49:59

I sometimes do a second brew on my kombucha, where I put the kombucha into bottles and add some fruit juice. The bottles I have are usually used by people brewing beer. I have a lot of fun bringing those into work.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/16/2014:  06:45:20

I have a nephew who is a prolific home brewer. He's a PhD level biologist so he knows how to keep things safe. He is also a beer lover and makes some darn good brews. Yum!
