I think I would like a sled, with brakes, and steering ability, and a motor, hmmmm, may be a snowmobile would work

DeanT - Posted - 10/21/2015:  11:31:20

I think staying in the lodge and shooting pool would keep me from the ER

The ski resort I do most of my skiing at has a log cabin halfway down the mountain with two wood stoves and a shop that sells hot cocoa tea and coffee plus apple cobbler and homemade donuts. It's a great place to warm up at on cold days.

dat - Posted - 10/22/2015:  05:51:12

a good place for a great big well insulated window, you can see the sights without having to get cold

OM45GE - Posted - 10/22/2015:  11:47:01

That would be great except this place is nestled into the trees. You can't get there in the winter except on skis or by snowmobile.

DeanT - Posted - 10/22/2015:  12:54:55

now I'm hungry for home made donuts...

dat - Posted - 10/22/2015:  13:42:40

home made donuts and a good hot cup of black dark roast coffee

OM45GE - Posted - 10/22/2015:  14:22:17

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

OM45GE - Posted - 10/22/2015:  14:23:13

This is apple harvest time up here and most of the orchards make homemade donuts too. It's like a little bit of heaven on earth.

I drove along Route 302 a few years ago in the fall from Portland,ME up through New Hampshire on my way to Montreal. What a beautiful area that is ,esp. up around Mt. Washington.

DeanT - Posted - 10/22/2015:  17:28:04

Portland Maine is the furthest north I've ever been in my life

OM45GE - Posted - 10/23/2015:  03:26:35

302 is a nice road. The section through Pinkham Notch by Mount Washington is really nice. My son and I drove the auto road to the top of Mount Washington  this summer. It was a really clear day and the views were terrific.

dat - Posted - 10/23/2015:  06:02:24

been 20 something years since I have been out of the Texas/ Louisiana/ Arkansas/ Oklahoma area.

farthest north I have been is Mifflinburg  Pa.  it's pretty country up there,  one of these days a trip up farther might be nice.   my Grandmother lived in Main during WWII, I think I have some cousins there I've never met,  I had an Aunt that died last year that still lived there, hadn't seen her in 30 years or more

DeanT - Posted - 10/23/2015:  09:33:34

My Wife grew up in Kennebunk, and her whole family is still in the area.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/23/2015:  11:40:46

My first wife was from Madawaska Maine. It's the furthest north town in the continental US. It's a loooong drive through some pretty remote parts of the north east.

Kennebunk and the Portland area are great. I've live in Portland for three different stretches. of time. One of the trucking companies I managed was based in Scarborough, just outside of Portland. Good sailing area too!

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/23/2015:  12:21:05

Clarence,Roland and Eric White were from Maine. Their family was from New Brunswick, were French, and named Leblanc (meaning "white" in French). Daniel, do you have French relatives in Maine? A few hundred years ago the French Acadians were expelled from the Maritimes by the British, many ending up in Louisiana (Cajun meaning Acadian).

dat - Posted - 10/23/2015:  13:33:40

yes, from back then and newer, my grandfather was French Canadian, last name Daigle,   they moved to Main in the 30's ? I think,   his sister, my great Aunt died last year

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/23/2015:  17:07:13

Oh yeah, I saw you mention on another post about having French background from Louisiana. It's the only state in the lower 48 I haven't been to yet.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/23/2015:  20:48:56

Louisiana is the only state I've been mugged in New Orleans specifically.

dat - Posted - 10/24/2015:  07:08:26

I've never been to New Orleans, we were closer to Lake Charles, but we didn't make it to town that often,

DeanT - Posted - 10/24/2015:  17:47:36

I've flown over more states than I've been too

DeanT - Posted - 10/26/2015:  22:01:05

It's still summer in Kansas

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/26/2015:  22:20:51

Naw, no winter yet. About 50*F daytime. It usually gets colder and snowy after Halloween. I'm off from Dec. 4 til March 30,, Nyuk,Nyuk.

DeanT - Posted - 10/27/2015:  05:07:52

I wouldn't mind a foot of snow on Halloween

dat - Posted - 10/27/2015:  06:49:59

iI don't mind snow on television, but don't care to walk through it

dmiller - Posted - 10/27/2015:  07:26:27

This was the scene here in town on Halloween Eve 24 years ago, back in 1991.

36.9 inches of snow over a day and a half.  We were still digging out 4 days later.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/27/2015:  07:29:55

You must've had an east wind coming in off Superior,eh

dat - Posted - 10/27/2015:  07:53:56

I believe I would have stayed inside by the fireplace 'till it thawed, get plenty of pickin time in

OM45GE - Posted - 10/27/2015:  08:42:06

Last winter I could climb up a snowbank and onto my roof.

dat - Posted - 10/27/2015:  09:42:37

I'ld have to dig a tunnel in the snow to the woodstack

OM45GE - Posted - 10/27/2015:  12:28:15

I wonder how much snow we will get this winter.

dat - Posted - 10/27/2015:  12:57:48

our normal around here averages about a 32nd inch a year, we got two inches a couple of years ago, so we're set for a while

OM45GE - Posted - 10/27/2015:  14:02:37

One problem with snow up here is that it's a very densely populated area and we run out of places to put it. There was a "snow farm" in Boston (basically an empty lot where they dumped the snow from all over the city) that still had snow in late June. It looked like a pile of dirt but it was snow.

I have a snow blower and the piles got so big the blower couldn't push it over them.I had to break them down with a shovel and blow it off to the side. The piles were over 10' high next to my driveway.

They also use snow melters to get rid of the stuff.

dat - Posted - 10/27/2015:  14:27:12

dang, by june here it's already pushing 100*  and been in the high 80's to 90's for a couple of months

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/27/2015:  15:17:25

Most summers here we look west to the mountains and see snow on the peaks, sometimes year round. Without that reservoir of frozen H2O that slowly melts, the rivers would dry up, and ranchers and potato farmers would go broke.

we rely on a lot of rain through the fall and spring, lots of lakes that fill up from the rain then the heat and city water departments suck them dry by november when it hopefully starts to rain again
