All I had to do to stop the snow in Kansas was buy a shovel

OM45GE - Posted - 02/04/2016:  05:32:56

Funny, I put new snow tires on the car in December and haven't needed them since.

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/04/2016:  06:19:44

I guess we all buy insurance hoping we don't need it

OM45GE - Posted - 02/04/2016:  07:12:37

It's like we're betting the insurance companies that something bad is going to happen to us and they're betting it won't.

DeanT - Posted - 02/04/2016:  08:05:57

we should get insurance refunds at the end of the year

OM45GE - Posted - 02/04/2016:  10:52:45

I don't think we should hold our breath.

dat - Posted - 02/04/2016:  10:58:59

kinda like taxes, it goes up but never down

DeanT - Posted - 02/04/2016:  15:50:45

My house taxes actually came down, not sure why but my appraisal was less last year.

OM45GE - Posted - 02/05/2016:  02:53:21

Our went down a couple of years ago. I was against it and now they're talking about cutting teachers and services. All things I live here for and gladly paid the taxes to get.

DeanT - Posted - 02/05/2016:  06:10:09

Sounds like you live in Kansas! They have taken a lot from the schools

OM45GE - Posted - 02/05/2016:  06:33:21

Sad, well educated kids are key to the future of the country.

dat - Posted - 02/05/2016:  07:20:19

they built a nice fence, covered outdoor sitting area for the facualty, very nice landscaping at our school, then laid off three teachers because there wasn't enough money.

I don't mind paying taxes, but I wonder why they spend it where they do sometimes

DeanT - Posted - 02/05/2016:  08:08:54

they just built us a nice new airport terminal, but can't keep up the roads to get there...

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/05/2016:  10:24:03

Same old story- graft, payola, old boy cronyism. Same thing in Canada. There are long stretches of highway in northern Ontario and British Columbia that should have been made 4 lane divided years ago and are now downright dangerous due to the increased traffic in the last 40 years.

dat - Posted - 02/05/2016:  10:34:11

kinda reminds me of this

dat - Posted - 02/05/2016:  11:11:07

even with all that though, they do good things with the taxes too, it's just more fun to point out the bad and the waste

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/05/2016:  11:49:07

O yeah, I'm still grateful I live in a well-off and peaceful part of the world. Could be a lot worse.

OM45GE - Posted - 02/05/2016:  11:59:05

Agreed.

yeah, move to the states after our next election,  no matter what way it goes I don't figure it'll be any better

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/05/2016:  13:01:24

I'd like to move to Arizona ,at least when I retire (at 87 the way it's going ,lol). I got gas yesterday for $1.47 a gallon.

DeanT - Posted - 02/05/2016:  14:16:08

The gas prices decrease so I save money, but my health insurance is going through the roof so there goes the money savings. I'm one of 5 siblings who have all (or are still) worked hard, and none of us are as well off as our parents were. We are the generation that has gone backwards. Even more sad is that my parents wealth got eaten by the senior care, rest homes and hospice care.

dat - Posted - 02/05/2016:  14:25:02

same here, heath care costs more now that it's "free" than it ever did before. when I started work, insurance was paid 100%   then we had to start paying 20% , then even staying at 20% the cost keeps going up, then our percentage went up again. now our group plan costs each employee $85 a week now on just our part

DeanT - Posted - 02/05/2016:  15:48:56

and then when something does happen, you can't afford the deductables...

OM45GE - Posted - 02/06/2016:  05:27:34

We got eight inches of snow yesterday. The weather forecasts were calling for a "dusting" but the storm came a little closer than expected. It sure is pretty out there.

Here's the view out my front door:

dat - Posted - 02/06/2016:  06:50:11

nice, I like snow, but I don't believe I would like it often, we get snow about once every 3 to 5 years, bay be about an inch or two,    I still like pictures of it though

DeanT - Posted - 02/06/2016:  06:51:23

still waiting for snow in Wichita...

dat - Posted - 02/06/2016:  07:16:06

it rained here pretty good last light, and it's cold as a witches teat, it got down in the low 30's

Here's a couple from last winter when we got 110 inches of snow. Oh,and one showing what happens when you hit black ice at 50 MPH.

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/06/2016:  08:42:31

Hate black ice - hit some with the semi two years ago in BC around a bend, in the mountains. The trailer (loaded) started sliding out sideways,,I hit bare pavement just in time to get her straightened out again.

OM45GE - Posted - 02/06/2016:  08:47:01

No fun at all. This one happened as I was accelerating onto a highway and went under a bridge that was dripping water onto the road below. I didn't even have time to lift off the throttle. Totaled my M3 Convertible. disapprove

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/06/2016:  08:53:01

Oh man, it's a shame- glad you weren't hurt. Yeah, it's usually melted snow that refreezes. I hit some that had refrozen after the noonday sun had melted snow on the shoulder and flowed across the road. Trouble is you can't see it up ahead - hence called "black" ice, cuz it's just a thin layer that looks like bare asphalt.

OM45GE - Posted - 02/06/2016:  09:22:40

I pulled off the highway once when a rain storm was starting to turn to freezing rain. I pulled into a shopping center and set the brakes. I was doing some paperwork when I got the sensation that the truck was moving. When I looked up I saw that I was slowly sliding sideways. The whole parking lot was a sheet of black ice. I was sliding towards a light pole and couldn't do anything to stop. Fortunately the truck stopped sliding about 20 feet short of the pole.

dat - Posted - 02/06/2016:  09:24:07

we'll get ice, but when it snows it's like slush,  coming up on our ice chance time of the year, usually February we'll have some freezing rain or sleet that'll freeze on the bridges, but the roads are usually clear.   I have slid some, but so far I have been watched over enough from above to not get hurt or damage anything.   I know I have been watched over 'cause I don't know how I straightened out the curves and slides and made it ok

dat - Posted - 02/06/2016:  09:25:21

do ya'll run studded tires in the winter?  or just go with it with rubber

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/06/2016:  09:41:23

They used to allow studded tires in Canada, but no more. The roads got tore up too much. I have chained up on the truck though, to get up a slippery hill or two.

dat - Posted - 02/06/2016:  09:54:51

looks like Toby is lookin fer the buried in snow fire hydrant, how does he like the snow?

DeanT - Posted - 02/06/2016:  10:02:27

that's one difference in Kansas... if it does snow, everything it too afraid to go out in it. 3" shuts down the town

OM45GE - Posted - 02/06/2016:  10:16:20

Daniel,

I just run Blizzak Snow tires on all four corners.  Even with rear wheel drive and 400 hp I don't have problems in snow. Black ice on the other hand...

Toby LOVES the snow. He roles in it, tunnels in it and pretty much acts the fool. This morning we were at a sledding hill at the high school and he slid/rolled all the way to the bottom.

DeanT - Posted - 02/06/2016:  12:59:33

I miss our sledding days growing up in Michigan!

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/06/2016:  13:59:34

I used to spend all day outside in winter, as long as it was above +10*F. Hockey and tobogganing and car bumper hitching after dark. lol. Nowadays I like calm sunny days for walks along the river trails in Calgary.

DeanT - Posted - 02/06/2016:  15:48:43

I miss the calm sunny Michigan days.... In Kansas the winds never stops

dmiller - Posted - 02/07/2016:  10:11:24

Daniel - - studded tires are illegal here in Minnesota also.  I'm not sure about chains for the tires though.  If you have an out of state license plate on your car, and you're here in winter time using studded tires, you get a pass.  Visitors to the state can use them, but the locals can't.  Go figure, eh?

dmiller - Posted - 02/07/2016:  10:15:22

I used to do camping/ backpacking/ hiking/ all that stuff when I was younger.  My idea of camping (these days) is pulling up to the campsite in a car and camper, instead of hiking or canoeing to a campsite with a tent and a backpack.

OM45GE - Posted - 02/07/2016:  11:07:16

I still ski, snowshoe and winter hike. I love the winter time.

DeanT - Posted - 02/07/2016:  16:06:12

My idea of camping is reading about someone else doing it on Facebook...

OM45GE - Posted - 02/07/2016:  19:24:21

You need a luxury motor coach.

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/07/2016:  19:26:48

Now you're talkin' turkey

OM45GE - Posted - 02/07/2016:  19:31:32

Roughing it was never so easy.

DeanT - Posted - 02/08/2016:  04:23:07

Yeah, that would work!

dat - Posted - 02/08/2016:  05:39:05

we still camp, but take a lot more stuff with us
