Wow, good form ,Dean!

dmiller - Posted - 08/23/2016:  21:39:11

Good form indeed!  I used to run (a bit), but nothing serious like a marathon.

Can't run at all (these days) due to foot neuropathy.  Kudos to you!

(edited to add - - - - - > > >) one of the "Big Bosses" at work is a runner and he logs a lot of miles.  He and I were talking a while back, and I asked him if he'd ever run a marathon?  He said he tried one once, but didn't finish.  He joked (or maybe not) that when asked about his running and marathons - - he would tell folks that he ran the half marathon (13.1 miles) instead of telling folks he quit halfway through the real deal (26.2).  He thought his explanation sounded better than admitting to quitting. Like I said - - he's one of the "big bosses" there at work.  Who am I to argue??    big

I don't remember who the comedian was who said he was impressed by marathoners because he couldn't even drive 26 miles without stopping to pee.

DeanT - Posted - 08/24/2016:  04:43:39

Thanks you guys! I've done 34 and counting. I've also gone further (Ultras) on several occasions. Half marathons are the most popular race distance now, so the Big Boss's story would work perfect!

dat - Posted - 08/24/2016:  05:46:21

my Running days were done 10 years ago with back surgery,   I can walk real fast though,   34 marathons is great, keep it going  yes

DeanT - Posted - 08/24/2016:  10:04:37

Thanks! Hoping to keep going until they burry me in my running shoes!

OM45GE - Posted - 08/24/2016:  12:17:30

My knees let me down. I can hike, ski, bike, etc. but running hurts. That said, on my best days I wasn't anywhere near Dean's league.

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/24/2016:  13:15:07

I used to run 5 miles a day in my early twenties, but only in August/September to get in shape for hockey. After that I did a lot of physical jobs that kept me slim.

dat - Posted - 08/24/2016:  14:07:28

I used to run 3 to 5 miles a day through the spring and summer to get ready for goose season, toting those decoy bays out in the rice fields along with a shotgun and plenty of shells can wear you out, 'spcially after a night of adult beverages with the guys.

the hike back was usually worse than the hike out there, more weight from the birds, and your hangover had more time to set in, or you were more awake by then to feel it

DeanT - Posted - 08/24/2016:  16:07:01

I'm averaging 10 miles a day, but some days I go as far as 30. It's a full blown addiction...

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/24/2016:  20:54:25

Do you get "runner's high" ,Dean?

OM45GE - Posted - 08/25/2016:  02:59:24

I'm averaging 7 miles a day, but at a fast walk, not a run.

DeanT - Posted - 08/25/2016:  04:53:46

I get runner's high almost every run. It happens when your body converts from sugar to fat burn, at about 40 minutes into a run. I'm addicted to it :) My wife is a walker, she uses a treadmill, and also like the cross county ski machine. She quit smoking at 62, and started working out at 63. I'm very proud of her!

OM45GE - Posted - 08/25/2016:  05:40:08

You and she should be proud. Quitting smoking is incredible difficult - at any age.

I've seen studies saying you can get an exercise high from any prolonged aerobic workout. I used to swim 90 minutes a day and definitely got the same euphoric feeling I got from running. I get a similar feeling skiing, but I wonder if it's at least partly from doing something exhilarating in beautiful places.

dat - Posted - 08/25/2016:  08:10:54

I don't get near the exercise I used to, still try to stay active, but I can sure do more,   kayaking this weekend,   but that will just be a couple of times for a few hours. over the weekend

DeanT - Posted - 08/25/2016:  08:15:55

At our ages it becomes very important, we've already buried too many family and friends. Our bass player died at 59 years old. He was a smoker and was always asking me who I was running from. My wife's sister died at 51 from lung cancer.

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/25/2016:  08:47:46

Glad I was able to quit smoking 17 years ago.

dat - Posted - 08/25/2016:  09:59:27

I never did smoke, I did chew and dip though, which isn't any better, but I tried to like cigarettes and never could.  they smell so good when a zippo filled with ronsonol fluid first lights them up.

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/25/2016:  11:58:49

After I quit I used to hang around the city bus terminal to suck in the fumes......

DeanT - Posted - 08/25/2016:  16:54:20

if I get a terminal illness, give me a carton of cigarettes, and a case of whiskey. I'll be fine...

OM45GE - Posted - 08/26/2016:  02:52:16

It sure has gotten to be an expensive habit.

DeanT - Posted - 08/26/2016:  05:56:57

ciggs are over $5 a pack in Kansas now with all the taxes

dat - Posted - 08/26/2016:  07:20:51

I'm camping this weekend, I'll probably overdose on bacon, then work it off in the kayak, then eat more bacon

dat - Posted - 08/26/2016:  07:21:52

I remember a long time ago that I said if copenhagen ever got to a dollar, I would quit,  I think before I did quit it was 5 dollars a can

OM45GE - Posted - 08/26/2016:  07:31:13

I quit smoking when a pack hit 50 cents. That was back when we had to watch TV by candlelight. cool

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/26/2016:  07:35:22

I'd hate to count up all the $ I spent on booze and cigarettes over 35 years.

OM45GE - Posted - 08/26/2016:  08:34:27

Yeah, you definitely don't  want to know.

dat - Posted - 08/26/2016:  08:40:59

think of it as the price of an education, sometimes it can be expensive to learn

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/26/2016:  09:26:25

Education tuition paid to rich liquor and tobacco CEO's

OM45GE - Posted - 08/26/2016:  10:56:56

Not to mention all the money paid to doctors and rehab centers.

DeanT - Posted - 08/26/2016:  11:19:29

It was always easier to find money for booze than money for rent

dat - Posted - 08/26/2016:  13:46:53

or the light or water bill,   the water bill was usually about 15 bucks, a case of beer was about 12 to 15 bucks, the water bill was paid on the last day due, there was always beer in the fridge

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/26/2016:  18:05:37

One time the rural trash man came to collect the annual fee - we got drunk together and he left next morning forgetting to collect.

dmiller - Posted - 08/26/2016:  21:38:27

I always had money for smokes and beer.  I made barely above minimum wage back then at the various grunt jobs I had - - but it never entered my mind to save money to pay for "legitimate" bills.  Smokes are now above 9 dollars for a pack here in Minnesota.  I never did chew, but I know that's high here too. Tobacco is cheaper if you go to the local reservation where you can get it without all the state taxes.  I'm glad I quit smoking back two or so years ago (8th of January/ 2014).  I've actually been able to "squirrel away" a lot of that money that I would've spent on cigarettes these past couple of years.  I shoulda started doing that YEARS ago.  Oh well - - we live and learn, eh?

DeanT - Posted - 08/27/2016:  02:42:40

My wife quit smoking when she retired and started drawing Social Security. The money saved + SS = the same as when she was working full time

OM45GE - Posted - 08/27/2016:  04:33:08

I remember how cool I thought I was when I started smoking. What a fool.

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/27/2016:  08:55:37

A lot of our TV , movie and sports heroes did advertisements holding a cigarette.

OM45GE - Posted - 08/27/2016:  09:48:25

Doctors too.

DeanT - Posted - 08/27/2016:  14:50:26

I still like the smell today.

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/27/2016:  15:11:49

Same here. It's just burning leaves but what an effect it has on former smokers...crazy

Well - - ALMOST nothing finer!  wink

Remember LSMFT?

dmiller - Posted - 08/28/2016:  10:16:04

Yup.  That, and "Winston tastes good, like a cigarette should".

The first cigarette I ever smoked was a Tareyton.  (remember them?)

Their slogan was - - - "I'd rather FIGHT than switch!"!

Here are some Canadian brands I used to buy...

OM45GE - Posted - 08/29/2016:  07:41:24

I used to smoke English Ovals when I could get them. Camels if I couldn't.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 08/29/2016:  09:53:05

My oldest niece has started smoking, along with a lot of other stupid things.  My dad is very frustrated.  All my sister's kids are determined to move out when they hit 18 (actually one of them moved out at 17), and be independent.  I've been trying to tell my dad that when they get to 18, technically they're adults and can do stupid things and you can't stop them.  We just have to hope that they don't do anything too stupid that can't be fixed later.

The oldest seems to be trying pretty hard to hit that "too stupid to be able to be fixed later" goal.

dat - Posted - 08/29/2016:  10:22:00

my bro in law smoked lucky strike and camels when I was growing up,  I tried both and figured they weren't for me
