my greyhounds hide from thunder...

OM45GE - Posted - 07/25/2015:  04:14:08

I had a gun trained Golden Retriever who was terrified of thunder. A gun shot meant find the dead bird but a thunderclap would send him running to the bedroom where he would try to cram himself under the bed. Only his head would fit and he would lie there shaking until the storm passed.

DeanT - Posted - 07/25/2015:  07:10:24

yep! Ours are ok with fireworks, and jets from the AF base, but thunder sends them hiding and shaking

OM45GE - Posted - 07/26/2015:  07:15:31

That same Golden was also terrified of grating. He would walk around storm drains and drop to the ground shaking if we came to a grated sidewalk that he couldn't see his way around.

Are purebred dogs more high strung and quirky nervous? Wondering if it's because of the diminishing gene pool over time.

OM45GE - Posted - 07/26/2015:  07:49:58

That dog wasn't high strung in his demeanor just afraid of thunder and grates. He used to do other things that were pretty brave for a dog. He climbed the ladder on a slide at the local playground and then slide down. He would do it over and over.

DeanT - Posted - 07/26/2015:  14:57:05

Greyhounds are the opposite of high strung. They are low strung and spend 23 hours a day sleeping upside down on the couch

OM45GE - Posted - 07/26/2015:  15:08:47

Our neighbors have a Wheaton Terrier who is so high strung he quivers when he tries to sit.

DeanT - Posted - 07/26/2015:  16:17:34

I don't know how high strung dogs hearts don't explode

OM45GE - Posted - 07/26/2015:  17:55:46

There is some sort of little terrier about the size of a big city rat who lives the next street over that makes me anxious it is so hyper.

DeanT - Posted - 07/26/2015:  22:01:44

probably a Jack Russell... they live in fast motion

dat - Posted - 07/27/2015:  10:12:07

most terriers are born with turpentine on their rear end, always running

OM45GE - Posted - 07/27/2015:  13:14:57

THis one doesn't look like a Jack Russell. Probably a mix. It yaps at a painful pitch and volume whenever Toby and I come into sight. If it's in the house you can hear it half a block away even with the windows shut.

dat - Posted - 07/27/2015:  15:27:08

I never did like those little yapping ankle biters

DeanT - Posted - 07/27/2015:  18:22:07

Great watchdogs though!

OM45GE - Posted - 07/28/2015:  04:57:11

You couldn't sleep through this thing yapping.

DeanT - Posted - 07/28/2015:  05:53:15

I have a little Shih-Tzu rescue dog, and she never barks

OM45GE - Posted - 07/28/2015:  15:47:14

The head of the land speed record team I'm on has two Shih Tzu's and they're great little dogs. I,still prefer bigger dogs myself.

DeanT - Posted - 07/28/2015:  18:41:08

She was a stray who found us 3 years ago. We fell in love with her before we even got to the shelter. So we adopted her. I'm a big dog person, but love the little furball

chuckv97 - Posted - 07/28/2015:  20:57:42

Did you guys ever have a dog that did this?!

DeanT - Posted - 07/28/2015:  22:06:26

No way! our dogs drink out of the toilet if we leave the seat up...tongue

dat - Posted - 07/29/2015:  10:17:00

yeah, the toilet is for drinking, dogs would rather drink cool water than warm, the toilet seems to keep it cooler than a stainless bowl

DeanT - Posted - 07/29/2015:  17:52:18

I never knew that dogs tongues curl under when they drink, until I saw it in slow motion on face book.

dat - Posted - 07/30/2015:  05:47:23

I never knew that until I just read it here,  amazing what you can learn on the BHO

DeanT - Posted - 07/30/2015:  06:03:40

Yep! That's the video I saw on Face Book. I always thought their tongue went forward

dat - Posted - 07/30/2015:  06:24:00

unless you have a lab, then they drink from the bottom of the bowl

DeanT - Posted - 07/30/2015:  10:01:49

some dogs are just weird!

dat - Posted - 07/30/2015:  12:43:31

my last lab would drink off the bottom of where ever he drank,  he even stuck his head all the way under water at times when we were at the river or lake

DeanT - Posted - 07/30/2015:  16:43:19

Ever notice a dog's tongue is longer than his head

OM45GE - Posted - 08/01/2015:  05:42:35

Speaking of weird dogs, Toby always carries something with him when he walks, usually a stick that he will leave outside and pick up when we head out. He has had his current favorite for about four months now. It's one third the size it was when he first found it from him chewing the ends.

However, he found a pacifier on the ground last week and that's been his carry around of choice. I worried about him choking on it but it seems too big. He looks so stupid with it sticking out of his mouth.

DeanT - Posted - 08/01/2015:  06:34:01

well, some people do call their dogs babies...

dat - Posted - 08/01/2015:  07:04:54

glad we had our kids, and the grandbaby,   but dogs are less trouble

OM45GE - Posted - 08/01/2015:  10:23:22

That's pretty much what he looks like, although sometimes he carries it in his mouth and you can't even see it.

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/01/2015:  11:56:53

A friend of mine had a female dog that used to chew beer bottle caps if you flipped them in the air. Her teeth were all worn down from the constant biting on metal. You'd hear her "clicking" away on those things for hours. She also through her unspaded life had many litters of pups - over 50 in all. She was a sort of beagle/terrier cross- what a crazy mutt.

OM45GE - Posted - 08/01/2015:  13:59:07

Holy crap!

DeanT - Posted - 08/01/2015:  15:32:10

she's lucky she didn't swallow those bottle caps!

OM45GE - Posted - 08/01/2015:  16:28:58

I'll say.

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/01/2015:  17:38:53

She never did swallow any. BTW ,,50 pups, not 50 litters

DeanT - Posted - 08/01/2015:  17:48:16

That's still a lotta pups

OM45GE - Posted - 08/01/2015:  18:13:24

I was trying to figure out how she could have done 50 litters. 50 pups is pretty impressive on its own.

DeanT - Posted - 08/01/2015:  23:02:35

I could see it with barn cats. They reproduce like rabbits...

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/02/2015:  01:43:44

Our Alsatian years ago had one litter before we got her spaid,, she had nine pups.

dat - Posted - 08/03/2015:  10:31:59

one puppy is plenty to keep track of, even though a whole slew of them is fun to watch

DeanT - Posted - 08/03/2015:  16:38:48

I like racing greyhounds, because they are adults when they are up for adoption

OM45GE - Posted - 08/03/2015:  17:36:49

Do they neuter racing greyhounds?

DeanT - Posted - 08/03/2015:  22:22:02

Yes!

OM45GE - Posted - 08/04/2015:  05:39:07

How about when they're still racing?

DeanT - Posted - 08/04/2015:  06:01:07

No

dat - Posted - 08/04/2015:  14:33:26

so they remember what they were for and can't do anything about it,  whew, that's bad , better to cut them early so they'll never know
