We had a neighbor who was a ham operator. His transmissions would scramble our picture.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/19/2015:  10:02:17

Kawasaki motorbikes going past scrambled our tv picture

dat - Posted - 12/19/2015:  10:20:15

yeah, on both channels

OM45GE - Posted - 12/19/2015:  10:21:07

That's back when TV came over the airways and telephone came over wires.

dat - Posted - 12/19/2015:  10:28:35

we had one UHF and one VHF channel, I think the UHF was CBS and the VHF was PBS if the weather was right we could sometimes get NBC

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/19/2015:  10:36:10

We got 3 Buffalo (35 miles away) channels, and two from Canada. Toronto was 32 miles across Lake Ontario, but the picture from their channels was pretty snowy.

what else would you expect from Canada and Buffalo, it always snows there  yes

DeanT - Posted - 12/19/2015:  11:48:15

we lived in Michigan, but got Chicago stations better than Detroit. That's why I'm still a Cubs fan

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/19/2015:  12:26:10

Yeah, my brother is still a Yankees fan cuz the Buffalo channel used to have their games on Saturday afternoons.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/19/2015:  13:37:37

We were on the far side of a hill from Boston. Dad had to put up a 60' tower with the TV antenna on it to get four stations.

DeanT - Posted - 12/19/2015:  15:53:59

when we turned the TV off, we would stare at the little dot in the middle of the screen until it went away

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/19/2015:  16:28:50

If we fell asleep watching the late movie we'd wake up at 3 am seeing this, and the tv hissing static

OM45GE - Posted - 12/19/2015:  18:00:50

Back in the early 60's my dad got one of the first TVs with a remote control. He thought he was hot stuff until he got the next electric bill which was about five times usual. Turns out the remote only turned off the picture tube so the television was running 24-7. Dad was not amused.

dmiller - Posted - 12/19/2015:  18:21:29

Back when we were kids, Dad got one of those contraptions you could attach to the antenna and turn the antenna from inside the house to get better reception from the (whatever) channel you were watching.  It worked pretty good for the 4 stations that were available at the time.  We had ABC, CBS, NBC, and the Sarkes Tarzian (local) station, but all of them went off the air at midnight/ the national anthem was played/ and there was no more TV until 6 AM or so.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/19/2015:  19:00:05

When out local station came back on the air around 6:00 AM, they had about half an hour of the American flag waving.

dmiller - Posted - 12/19/2015:  19:28:49

Them were the patriotic days.  We'll never see the like of them again.  sad

DeanT - Posted - 12/20/2015:  06:37:21

whenever the President gave a speech, or a rocket blasted off, it was on every channel

OM45GE - Posted - 12/20/2015:  09:39:58

Do you remember when the TV Guide listed which shows were in color?

DeanT - Posted - 12/20/2015:  09:46:54

Mid 60's? I do remember when they would put a BW for the black and white ones, or a RR for rerun.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/20/2015:  10:02:26

I don't remember when they started listing which show were in color, but I think it was in the 50's. When I was little, nothing was in color. We still had a black and white set when they were showing which ones were color. Dad finally got a color set in the late 50's. At some point they started showing which ones were B&W.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/20/2015:  11:29:58

I used to put up tv aerials part time for my older brother who had a tv/stereo shop. We pointed the narrow end towards Buffalo. People would complain the colour was grainy and/or blurry- we'd go up on the roof and turn the aerial a bit til they yelled up "OK".

OM45GE - Posted - 12/20/2015:  14:51:29

I can't believe how big and inexpensive TVs are getting.

DeanT - Posted - 12/20/2015:  16:02:20

ours is flat and sits on a 6" shelf on the wall

OM45GE - Posted - 12/21/2015:  03:16:50

Ours isn't all that big by today's standards, 42". Some I see when I'm walking the dog look like drive in theater screens.

DeanT - Posted - 12/21/2015:  04:59:25

we get 2372 channels on our basic cable now, and most of it is crap

dat - Posted - 12/21/2015:  07:03:23

I think ours is 42 or 46, not really sure, our daughter wanted us to get a bigger one, but my bride and I both thought it was to big.  it's plenty big for our living room, any bigger would have been out of place pretty bad. we turn it on and play pandora radio on it more than watch anything

OM45GE - Posted - 12/21/2015:  08:25:35

There's a house I walk by that has a TV that must be over 80 inches. Their living room is about six feet deep so it must be like sitting in the front row of a movie theater.

DeanT - Posted - 12/21/2015:  11:21:38

I don't have a clue what ours is. It was huge when we got it, but these days it looks small compared to everyone else's. I don't care, it's just a noise box anyways

dat - Posted - 12/21/2015:  12:43:13

we had a 12 inch black and white growing up

OM45GE - Posted - 12/21/2015:  15:56:32

It would probably be collectible today.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/21/2015:  16:39:14

We didn't have a TV until I was 13 , so we did a lot more reading, playing games and sports.

DeanT - Posted - 12/21/2015:  16:48:34

I still have an old tube TV that works great. Too bad no one broadcasts for it anymore

OM45GE - Posted - 12/21/2015:  17:48:47

We've got one too. It would cost me $25 to get rid of it.

dat - Posted - 12/22/2015:  10:12:57

yeah, you can't just haul anything to the dump anymore then they charge you for what you do haul in

DeanT - Posted - 12/22/2015:  10:15:26

Or throw it in the river like the lowlifes do around here. It's amazing what we see in the river.

dat - Posted - 12/22/2015:  10:22:40

I bet,  driving the back roads around here it's getting to where every bridge over the creeks have a stove or fridge in the ditch, the county comes along and cleans up, hauls it to the dump, taxes pay for the trucks, labor time, fuel to clean up the roads, turns out costing because the dump costs to much and people dump by the roads.  if the dump was cheaper, less folks would probably litter, but then again, there are some people that will just litter anyway

OM45GE - Posted - 12/22/2015:  10:29:34

Litter is a pet peeve of mine. It pisses me off when people just throw crap on the ground.

dat - Posted - 12/22/2015:  10:38:11

'specially when there was a good spot in the walmart parking lot it could have been dumped

dat - Posted - 12/22/2015:  10:53:21

ticks me off when you are somewhere like this and there is trash that someone was to lazy to carry out

OM45GE - Posted - 12/22/2015:  12:57:52

The first time I saw the Grand Canyon was before digital photography. I was standing at an overlook taking in the awe inspiring views and there were film wrappers and 35 mm canisters in the ground. I couldn't believe people would travel to see something beautiful and spoil it like that.

dat - Posted - 12/22/2015:  13:02:35

we lost a place to dove hunt because other people didn't pick up their empty shells,   the owner was pretty easy going, he didn't expect you to find and pick up all your empties, but at least make an effort, many times we left with more empties than we shot just from picking up old ones we found. somebody left a pile of empties right next to his gate, that stopped the hunting for everybody, no exceptions

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/22/2015:  13:44:32

It's crazy how people used to think. Long ago they used to dump Chicago's raw sewage into Lake Michigan, but after a while people complained because they wanted clean beaches. So they built the Sanitary Canal which connects with the Illinois River, eventually with the Mississippi, thinking the sewage would just float away and be absorbed into the waters.

dat - Posted - 12/22/2015:  14:25:07

the solution to pollution is dilution yes

I'm surprised there aren't new super bionic algae and bacteria and bugs that thrive on plastic

OM45GE - Posted - 12/23/2015:  03:37:30

There are. One of the is called the Sargasso Algae. I don't think they can keep up with the volume.

DeanT - Posted - 12/23/2015:  04:26:35

I googgled it, wow, it even has it's own Sea

OM45GE - Posted - 12/23/2015:  05:09:32

LOL

I had read once that there were microbes that ate tire dust, supposedly why there aren't drifts of rubber on the sides of the roads from the millions of tons of rubber that wears off tires every year. That was apparently debunked and they now say there aren't drifts of the stuff because it blows or washes away and ends up in our lungs or the environment.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/23/2015:  07:31:07

I do a liver cleanse every couple of years, and regularly go to saunas - there's too much crap I absorb and breathe in

OM45GE - Posted - 12/23/2015:  08:15:14

Yeah, I wonder when all the diesel smoke I've sucked down over the years will catch up to me.
