A man after my own heart...

DeanT - Posted - 06/28/2012:  10:44:19

we gave up on our back yard... it's all straw now.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/28/2012:  10:50:06

We actually have a very nicely landscaped property with a beautiful lawn, but it came with the house when we bought it two years ago. I'm maintaining it, but it's not my favorite thing to do. I'd rather be picking, riding the motorcycles, out on the boat, etc...

DeanT - Posted - 06/28/2012:  10:51:46

Get a couple greyhounds and you won't have to worry about that yard very long

dat - Posted - 06/28/2012:  12:49:45

my bride has a flower bed that she keeps up, I keep a small vegetable garden,  other than that we just mow the weeds even.     an even cut green yard looks goof if it's weeds cut even or grass cut even

DeanT - Posted - 06/28/2012:  16:45:52

Our grass all died last summer (53 days of over 100 degrees) so this year all we have is nice green weeds... but they are dying in this years heat...

dat - Posted - 06/29/2012:  06:05:17

our weeds came back pretty strong this year even as dry as it was last year.   hopefully they survive this summer to

DeanT - Posted - 06/29/2012:  07:14:54

Not much gonna survive the Kansas heat... even the tics are dying

dat - Posted - 06/29/2012:  07:35:26

as humid as it is here a tick can lay dormant for a great long while and pounce on what even dog, cat, deer, rabbit, opossum, or what ever critter walks by, they just get meaner with the heat

DeanT - Posted - 06/29/2012:  10:22:45

I picked two off one of our dogs last night... dead. I thought it was strange. We didn't have hardly any last year. The year before they were everywhere. Nasty little things.

dat - Posted - 06/29/2012:  13:43:06

when I was a kid I used to look forward to picking ticks off dogs, we had a black lab named nig when I was very little, that dog and I went everywhere togeather before I started school.

DeanT - Posted - 06/29/2012:  15:09:44

My childhood dog (my favorite and most loyal of a bunch) was a Dalmatian named Baron. Inseparable. We went a million miles together, him running, me on my bike.

OM45GE - Posted - 07/02/2012:  04:24:46

If insects like ticks and mosquitos didn't exist and a writer like Stephen King made them up, we would think he was a sick SOB.

DeanT - Posted - 07/02/2012:  07:09:47

Maybe they exist to feed Purple Martins

And bats

DeanT - Posted - 07/02/2012:  10:04:05

Bats are cool, they fly around our street lights in the city, gobbling up bugs

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/02/2012:  12:06:02

Bats are cool outside. In the house? Not so much.

DeanT - Posted - 07/02/2012:  19:13:49

our cats would destroy the house if a bat got in... so far, it hasn’t happened yet. The cats are bad enough with a fly in a lamp shade

OM45GE - Posted - 07/03/2012:  05:27:10

I was walking Toby before dawn this morning. There were some bugs flying around me and a couple of bats were swooping in real close to catch them. I wonder if that's how the old wives tale about bats getting tangled in your hair started.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/03/2012:  07:24:01

Second day that the college is closed. And tomorrow we were going to be closed anyway.

At least I have power. (I didn't for the first 36 hours.) And I didn't have much food in the fridge (I'd finished the last of the eggs and ham right before the storm hit) so I didn't loose much.

But I'm kind of bored.

I think I'm going to take the dogs to a nearby state park and go for a walk in the woods.

DeanT - Posted - 07/03/2012:  07:26:57

Beware the tics... I’ve been picking more tics of each dog, every day, than I did all the dogs all last year combined. But they are finally succumbing to the heat.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/03/2012:  08:02:00

This park isn't so bad with the ticks. The paths are pretty clear with not much underbrush.

There's one just up the street from me that my dad thought looked interesting. So I took the dogs for a walk there one day and Colby in particular was covered with ticks by the time we got back to the car. I spent about ten minutes pulling them off both dogs. (Luckily most of them hadn't had a chance to latch on so it was mostly a matter of flicking them off.) My dad isn't so interested in that park anymore.

I do always check after a walk but so far haven't had a problem there.

OM45GE - Posted - 07/03/2012:  08:25:36

Has the weather improved in DC?

DeanT - Posted - 07/03/2012:  10:39:58

Do you ever use a flea comb for tics? Works awesome

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/03/2012:  10:41:47

It's pretty hot, although not as bad as it was Friday before the storm. But for all the people still without power (and they're still guessing next weekend before everyone is back online), I'm guessing that the fact it's 95 and not 104 isn't much comfort.

I'm so thankful my AC is back up. I got through the first night okay but the second night was pretty bad. If it had stayed off another day I might have considered moving my mattress to the basement, even though there's no windows at all down there which means I'd have to burn batteries for light if I needed to get up or whatever.

OM45GE - Posted - 07/03/2012:  11:45:33

Hopefully there won't be any more storms for a while.

DeanT - Posted - 07/03/2012:  19:07:44

I don't think we could survive the AC being off for even one day. Especially without power. Yikes!

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/04/2012:  18:34:37

When I first moved into the house the AC didn't work and it was hot (like 100+), but I had fans that I could turn on and that helped.

The thing about no electricity is no fans, either.

There are still people in the area with no power. I can't even imagine.

And work is having issues. No power in about half the buildings on all the campuses and one of the campuses is blocked off because of wires down. My building has power, so I might stop in tomorrow to grab some paperwork off my desk and come home to get some work done.

DeanT - Posted - 07/04/2012:  18:41:19

That's dedication!

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/04/2012:  21:09:34

No. It's fear. I desperately need to make some progress on this project. We need to be like 90% functional by the end of the month and having missed almost a week of work at this point I'm terrified I won't be ready.

I'm mentally going through the list of things that need to get done by then and trying to figure out what I can safely skip and what I can fudge and what has to be done.

DeanT - Posted - 07/05/2012:  00:14:17

You need a tall dark handsome stranger to help you

OM45GE - Posted - 07/05/2012:  04:31:28

My company's building is next door to a power station and we use their excess steam in a cogeneration plant to provide, heat, hot water and run the chillers for the AC. I steam pipe broke over the weekend and we had no AC or hot water until yesterday. The building is all glass so you can imagine how hot it was in there. They sent everyone they could home.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/05/2012:  06:43:49

Oh, geez. That sounds miserable.

I was telling my parents I'm so glad that my neighborhood has a fair number of trees. There are some apartment complexes around here that are buildings surrounded by huge parking lots and the parking lots act like solar generators and make it so miserably hot that even when there is AC it's hard to keep your place cool. A high rise like that? Geez. Can't even imagine.

DeanT - Posted - 07/05/2012:  07:29:45

they could always have neked day at work

OM45GE - Posted - 07/05/2012:  12:48:13

I might have gone in if they offered that as an option! cool

It is a solar building too with the giant computer controlled mirrors that track sun and beam it to fixed mirrors into a 12 story atrium. They may be able to turn them away from the sun, but if not...phew. You couldn't get naked enough to stay cool.

DeanT - Posted - 07/05/2012:  14:29:32

You could sure get a good tan!

OM45GE - Posted - 07/06/2012:  03:45:00

It is a really interesting building. We get several thousand visitors a year just to see the building.

dat - Posted - 07/06/2012:  05:37:13

are the visitors neked?

DeanT - Posted - 07/06/2012:  07:26:30

I wouldn't want to see any of mine that way

DeanT - Posted - 07/06/2012:  10:46:05

not even cute guy?

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/06/2012:  13:03:48

Notice I said "some" and not "everybody."

Unless you're talking to Dat. And if there's a cute guy he works with, I want to know more about it!

dat - Posted - 07/06/2012:  14:38:19

I'm probably about the cutest guy here and I'm pretty ugly

DeanT - Posted - 07/06/2012:  17:01:16

My window of cutness ended around 5th grade....

paulac7 - Posted - 07/06/2012:  17:06:52

DeanT - Posted - 07/08/2012:  00:00:57

Only according to my Mom :)

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/08/2012:  08:11:27

When I was in college I was telling someone that I'd never believed that I was attractive. She said, "Obviously your parents didn't tell you that you were beautiful often enough when you were a kid." And I said, "They told me I was beautiful all the time. But they're my parents. They're supposed to lie about that!"

DeanT - Posted - 07/08/2012:  08:25:55

My dogs think I'm beautiful at about supper time!
