They usually total cars if the repairs are 80% or more of the value of the car. Because of its age, book value on this is around $6,000. I may be able to argue them up a couple of thousand because of the options and condition but I bet there's well over $15,000 in damage. You can't really see it from the photo but the right front wheel is pushed back a few inches so there's some pretty serious structural damage.
I could buy it for salvage value and fix it myself but then I'd end up with way too money into it. They may surprise me and say it can be fixed, but I doubt it.
New ones are close to $80,000 so that's out of the question.

Yeah, you gotta love these insurance companies. So they figure with $6000 you can get another BMW of equivalent quality? Hmm.......not likely.

Darn it, that does suck. They tried to total my 98 Ford Wagon, but I couldn't replace it for the $2450 they wanted to give me. I know what's in my wagon, but wouldn't have a clue about the condition of a used $2450 car. So I took a check for $50 less than total value, and fixed it myself.

amazing that insurance companies charge you XXX amount of money for a new car, as the car gets older you are still paying insurance for the price of a new car, but they only cover what they say depreciated, they should depreciate your premiums along with it
OM45GE - Posted - 02/09/2015: 11:46:55
Yeah, and look at what they do to your premiums if you have a claim.
chuckv97 - Posted - 02/09/2015: 13:46:44
I've had no claims ever, and still my premiums went up this year, for the same car.
DeanT - Posted - 02/09/2015: 13:59:32
I've only got liability now, and my car still has a smashed in fender... but it runs great and I'm driving the wheels off it
OM45GE - Posted - 02/09/2015: 17:30:49
My collision coverage costs $330 a year. If I get $6,000 for the car I still come out ahead.
DeanT - Posted - 02/10/2015: 09:40:05
I feel for you, 6K doesn't't get a lot of car these days. I'd go for an old pick-up
OM45GE - Posted - 02/11/2015: 03:57:14
The insurance company called and said they're totaling the car. They didn't have the amount yet. They're paying for a rental car but only for ten days after I accept the settlement so I have to find and buy something before then. If it was summertime I would just ride the motorcycle, but with six feet of snow on the ground and lots of ice, that's not going to happen. ![]()

LOL
I used to run a trucking company that hauled motorcycles and snowmobiles into New England from New York and New Jersey. One of our big customers was Kawasaki Snowmobiles. They got out of the business and we went around to all the dealers and took back their inventory. The owner of the company lived on a river and had a mile long airstrip on his property. A lot of the sleds had been used and we spent the winter thrashing them up and down the river and airstrip and through the woods. I sort of got my fill of them.
DeanT - Posted - 02/11/2015: 10:20:29
They used to let us take snowmobiles to school when the busses couldn't get through. (I grew up in Michigan)
dat - Posted - 02/11/2015: 11:14:19
a few folks down south use snowmobiles to go goose hunting, they go through the mud in the rice fields pretty well

a mess to clean up, and don't let it dry before you wash it up, but it is
OM45GE - Posted - 02/12/2015: 16:55:16
I bet the mud gets in everything. The tracks must be a b**** to clean.
DeanT - Posted - 02/12/2015: 16:58:36
Just like playing mud volleyball.. the mud gets in everything and everywhere

My best friend lives up in the Mount Washington Valley. They have a mud football league up there. It's good fun. The players take it pretty seriously. It's been on ESPN.

some of those little pieces of material have a lot of stretch in them

The volleyball is the thing they hit over the net, after every session of pulling their bottoms out of their butt crack. Not sure I understand the rules of this odd game...

I think the tryouts are to see what kind of talent they have for how long they can leave the uniform askew

How come the cameras are always recording from such a low angle?

I used to work with a woman who's sister was one of those world class beach volleyball players. She was soooo beautiful. She was also a USAF pilot and an engineer who designed weapons systems for fighter jets. She used to tell me she would have to kill me if she told me any more about what she did. She could fly the fighters to test the systems but the wouldn't let her fly in combat which pissed her off royally
Francie was so far out of my league it wasn't funny, but it was fun just being around her.
OM45GE - Posted - 02/17/2015: 03:55:40
She sure was. I, on the other hand, have pretty much been an accidental tourist in this life. ![]()

If I'm not wearing business casual (slacks and button down shirt), I'm usually in sweats in the winter and shorts in the summer.
DeanT - Posted - 02/18/2015: 05:41:44
I'm all about the blue jeans unless I'm running or working out
dat - Posted - 02/18/2015: 06:02:28
