I used to be hooked on codeine for 9 years. Brutal getting off it. Now there's fentanyl that's killing addicts.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/22/2016:  12:15:23

Painkillers can be awfully addictive. I had knee surgery  earlier this year and was given a supply of Oxy - 20 - I took four.

DeanT - Posted - 12/22/2016:  16:57:48

addiction is why I won't touch it. As long as I don't touch the first one, I'm ok. But then, I'm the same with M&M's too... yep, chocoholic...

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/22/2016:  17:49:39

I hear you ,Dean. It's the locomotive that kills you, not the caboose.

DeanT - Posted - 12/22/2016:  18:41:13

That's a good one! I'm gonna steal that one!

OM45GE - Posted - 12/23/2016:  02:26:29

It reminds me of the joke about the drummer who was kicked out of the band because his timing was terrible. He was so despondent that he threw himself behind a train.

DeanT - Posted - 12/23/2016:  02:57:42

And he probably still got the girls...

OM45GE - Posted - 12/23/2016:  08:34:54

When I first started playing guitar, I was too naive to realize the impact it would have on my social life. I found out though.

DeanT - Posted - 12/23/2016:  10:19:52

I hope you didn't abuse the power!

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/23/2016:  11:21:34

Guitars are definitely chick magnets...banjos? - not so much

OM45GE - Posted - 12/23/2016:  13:38:27

Sad but true.

DeanT - Posted - 12/24/2016:  06:48:12

luckily I was already happily married when I took up banjo

OM45GE - Posted - 12/24/2016:  11:41:32

My first wife bought me a banjo for Christmas.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/24/2016:  12:16:00

The beginning of the end...eh?

DeanT - Posted - 12/24/2016:  13:23:19

I have my Tele tuned like a banjo for all my unplugged practice...

OM45GE - Posted - 12/24/2016:  15:05:27

I've told people about how you do that Dean. I have to try it on my Strat.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/24/2016:  15:07:51

I've done that with a Seagull guitar. Now I just put a cloth under the strings in front of the bridge and clothes pegs clipped to the bridge.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/24/2016:  15:11:21

I still have to try the clothespin thing. Trouble is, I don't have any clothespins.

DeanT - Posted - 12/24/2016:  17:15:27

I've gotten so used to my Tele as a 5 string banjo, I'm tempted to get a 6 string banjo and do the same thing with it.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/24/2016:  17:54:29

Do you use a standard set of banjo strings?

DeanT - Posted - 12/24/2016:  18:21:20

Nope. I use electric guitar strings. I throw out the 5th and 6th strings. For the 5th string I use another high e string, and it's spiked at the 5th fret. I've also cut new grooves into the nut, so that the 5 strings are evenly spaced. I love the aircraft carrier fretboard. I tune to regular banjo open G tuning, and it plays identical to a 5 string banjo.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/25/2016:  03:39:45

Cool. I'm probably not going to put a spike in the Strat, even though the hole can be filled. Might be an excuse to buy another guitar.

DeanT - Posted - 12/25/2016:  06:13:07

My Tele is pretty beat up (lots of soul) so a spike hole is nothing.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/25/2016:  14:51:57

The Strat is old but I've taken good care of it. I'll have to search Craig's List and see what I can find.

DeanT - Posted - 12/25/2016:  15:21:25

you're going to love it. In fact, if someone ever made a good sounding "banjo" pedal for an electric guitar, my banjo would be history.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/25/2016:  18:25:56

I'm surprised there isn't something. The Boss GP10 says it has banjo effects but I don't know how good it is.

About once a year or so I go down to Guitar Center and try the new processors and pedals... nothing I'd buy yet. The Line 6 Sampling guitar was pretty cool, but still to "electric" on the banjo setting.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/25/2016:  18:40:34

Someday

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/25/2016:  18:41:55

An electrified instru.....oh yeah, sorry - I already said that before

OM45GE - Posted - 12/25/2016:  19:01:06

Shocking

I saw that. Have you tried it?

dmiller - Posted - 12/25/2016:  19:11:49

That looks really interesting !

OM45GE - Posted - 12/26/2016:  03:39:36

I've found things about simulating banjo sound on a guitar by stuffing things underneath the strings.

DeanT - Posted - 12/26/2016:  05:27:36

I haven't tried the guitar-jo, but have tried various materials under the strings. Yarn weaved into the strings at the bridge has worked the best

OM45GE - Posted - 12/26/2016:  07:38:36

I wonder how that works.

DeanT - Posted - 12/27/2016:  05:47:25

I think it's a felt pad

OM45GE - Posted - 12/27/2016:  06:33:14

I meant the yarn. How does that change the tone to sound more like a banjo?

DeanT - Posted - 12/27/2016:  13:08:53

It shortens the ring of the strings, to plinks... very much like the Guitar-Jo felt pads.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/27/2016:  13:42:55

Got it.

My guitar teacher used to have me put a cloth under the strings to kill the sustain when we were working on timing. Sometimes he would have me completely mute the strings so I was just hearing the percussion of the notes.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/27/2016:  17:32:45

That's how I practice to keep the banjo rolls even

DeanT - Posted - 12/27/2016:  17:37:06

It's how I practice banjo on my tele, so my wife keeps her sanity...

OM45GE - Posted - 12/27/2016:  17:51:16

Too late for my wife. cool

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/27/2016:  18:01:35

It seems I drive them crazy.

DeanT - Posted - 12/28/2016:  12:41:12

My lovely bride does like the band money... so she puts up with it...

OM45GE - Posted - 12/28/2016:  12:46:57

I saw the guy who co-wrote "All I Want For Christmas Is You" with Mariah Carey. It's brought in over $50 million in royalties. I'm sure most brides would like that band money 💰 big

DeanT - Posted - 12/28/2016:  15:58:05

Man, I gotta write a new hit Christmas song!

OM45GE - Posted - 12/28/2016:  16:30:05

I saw him interviewed and he said it took about 20 minutes to write the chords and melody and then Mariah wrote the lyrics. I don't know what that works out to per hour but I'm pretty sure it's more than minimum wage.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/28/2016:  17:56:47

Willie Nelson sold his song "Night Life" for $150. Ray Price later bought it and made a big hit out of it, and later yet it was recorded by Sinatra, Doris Day, Al Hirt and others. I'd say the royalties amounted to more than $150.
