Several times I've taken jobs as a direct contributor and was content and happy. Then they would ask me to take a management role and I was miserable and would end up changing jobs to get back in a working position.

DeanT - Posted - 10/03/2016:  15:17:06

I've never understood why they have to mess up good workers by making them bosses. Good workers don't always make good bosses, and good bosses are not always good workers. Stupid places like to fix what isn't brokeangry

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/03/2016:  15:24:09

It's like star sports figures that try coach - not usually successful. As Ted Williams, Larry Bird, Wayne Gretzky.,etc. Good workers/players don't have the patience with deadbeats.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/03/2016:  18:13:57

There's a book called "The Peter Principle". The basic theme of the book is that workers keep getting promoted until they reach their level of incompetence.

DeanT - Posted - 10/03/2016:  18:55:26

I remember that book! SO TRUE!!! One just need to watch the news these days...

OM45GE - Posted - 10/04/2016:  02:18:11

I see it every day.

DeanT - Posted - 10/04/2016:  05:26:51

I was thinking how the Peter principal applied to politics too

OM45GE - Posted - 10/04/2016:  10:13:34

Oh yeah.

dat - Posted - 10/05/2016:  10:07:18

never heard it like that, but it's true, the best workers get moved up, then the next person doing that job doesn't get it done as well as the first one, the company would do better off paying teh person better to do the same job they are doing if they want to keep them and the customers happy

OM45GE - Posted - 10/05/2016:  10:12:34

Many companies don't recognize that some people are happy doing what they're doing and don't want to move into supervisory or management roles. I think you need to make opportunities available but also reward people who are doing a good job and want to continue doing that job.

DeanT - Posted - 10/05/2016:  11:18:57

That was one thing I didn't like about the military. They even had a name for it... "up-or-out". I had to become a crewchief to keep going. I resented every minute of it.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/05/2016:  11:42:37

It happens in the corporate world too. When we're looking at candidates' backgrounds, people will question why someone didn't get promotions. I say, maybe they were happy doing what they're doing. It still gets held against them.

dat - Posted - 10/05/2016:  12:00:41

my brother was tower chief (air traffic control , Air Force) at Tinker right before he retired, he liked the job but liked being actually responsible for his mistakes instead of being responsible for everybody else

dat - Posted - 10/05/2016:  12:05:07

I think I'm ready for a lot less of a supervision type job

OM45GE - Posted - 10/05/2016:  14:12:18

I'm ready for retirement.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/05/2016:  15:04:33

Today I could just park this thing under a bridge and tell'em to shove it

DeanT - Posted - 10/05/2016:  16:30:40

I almost went to Tinker. It was relocate to Tinker, or retire. I chose B.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/05/2016:  18:09:50

I've got too many hobbies that need my attention to waste time on working.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/05/2016:  18:27:33

Maybe I'll go back to selling my body

DeanT - Posted - 10/05/2016:  19:39:04

does that mean you came out from under the bridge?

OM45GE - Posted - 10/06/2016:  02:47:08

The biotech company I worked for previously used to pay volunteers for blood they used in research. You had to sign up and have your blood screened.  We got $40 a vial. They used to call us and ask if we wanted to donate. If a researcher liked your blood you could get called a lot but they limited how many times you could give. Some months I made $400.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/06/2016:  05:27:53

Between busking and selling blood, I could get by

DeanT - Posted - 10/06/2016:  05:30:51

whoever got my blood would get a lot of caffeine

They did with me too. The extra money wasn't going to make or break me, but it was a nice bonus.

I never knew there was such a thing as "Extra money"

dmiller - Posted - 10/06/2016:  07:58:57

Good luck on your switching jobs, Daniel.  I was 49 when I quit everything I knew how to do best and started a job in a brand new field.  It was scary at first, but the best decision I ever made (I think)!  Extra money - - yea.  I quit smoking 2 1/2 years ago and a pack of cigs were about 9 bucks a pack then. I figure I was saving 2 or 3 thousand bucks a year by not buying them but at the end of the year did I see that money in my pocket or bank account??  Not so's you'd notice.

LOL. I hear you.

DeanT - Posted - 10/06/2016:  10:17:03

My wife quit smoking when she retired and started SS. The savings made up for the difference between her pay and SS. It worked out perfect.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/06/2016:  11:09:45

You'll probably save money on medical bills in the long run too.

DeanT - Posted - 10/06/2016:  13:19:29

OHHH yeah! She has made a total turnaround, and hits the gym and the pool three times a week, and says she feels better than she ever has as an adult.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/06/2016:  14:14:09

That's really great. I'm happy for her - and you!

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/06/2016:  15:57:31

You can't buy good health - it takes effort and disciplined eating

DeanT - Posted - 10/06/2016:  16:35:19

Thanks! We've done a total revamp of our diet several years ago. No more artificial sweaters, nothing fried, cut out tons of sugar, and very little processed foods. We aren't whako health food freaks... but have gone back to eating more wholesome, like when we were growing up. Lots of salads.

Looks like a lovely day here in New England. Sunny skies and temperatures in the 70's. Might take a motorcycle ride.

DeanT - Posted - 10/07/2016:  05:29:45

44 degrees in Kansas this morning... SO nice after such a hot summer

OM45GE - Posted - 10/07/2016:  06:08:43

It looks nasty down in Florida. I wish they could send some of the rain our way.

dmiller - Posted - 10/07/2016:  08:16:14

38°F and rain here by Lake Superior.  The folks 50 or so miles north of me woke up to the first snow this morning.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/07/2016:  08:46:45

Beautiful here in central Ontario's Muskoka district - sunny, warm, and the trees are ablaze with colo(u)r

dat - Posted - 10/07/2016:  08:47:34

86* F right now,   snow is a long way away, if we get any at all

DeanT - Posted - 10/07/2016:  09:44:27

Kansas got enough rain this year for everyone. That's something us humans need to figure out... how to quickly get water from the areas where there is too much, to areas who don't have enough.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/07/2016:  10:26:38

They could dehydrate it to save shipping costs - just add water at the other end!

dat - Posted - 10/07/2016:  10:35:54

I seem to have some kind of memory about a cartoon that I have forgotten about instant water,   at the time it was pretty funny, ........ I think,

dmiller - Posted - 10/07/2016:  11:19:59

OM45GE - Posted - 10/07/2016:  19:47:15

They say the memory is the second thing to go as we get older. I can't remember what the first one is.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/08/2016:  16:50:34

I heard it was the second thing to get shorter

DeanT - Posted - 10/09/2016:  02:53:18

i'm already tired of trying to shave my ears and nose...

OM45GE - Posted - 10/09/2016:  15:36:14

I just read that consumers spend about five billion dollars on Halloween every year.

DeanT - Posted - 10/09/2016:  17:07:02

I spend exactly zero of that!

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/09/2016:  18:02:41

When the kids were little we used to buy them masks, but we grew pumpkins in the garden

OM45GE - Posted - 10/10/2016:  02:37:11

We give out candy to the trick or treaters so we add a little to the total.
