I flush out my systems somewhat by training for marathons... hopefully.

dat - Posted - 12/23/2015:  09:52:27

breathing exhaust fumes all these years, brake dust, carb cleaners, may be I drank enough alcohol when I was younger to counter act some of those

OM45GE - Posted - 12/23/2015:  11:15:59

We may hit 70 degrees tomorrow. That almost 40 degrees higher than normal and would break the record for the date by about 10 degrees. I'm going to put the top down on the car and go for a ride just to say I did.

dat - Posted - 12/23/2015:  12:27:16

We're at 78 now

OM45GE - Posted - 12/23/2015:  14:46:13

Is that normal for this time of year in deep east Texas?

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/23/2015:  14:51:02

We've got +5*F here in central Saskatchewan. About 4 inches of snow, no wind. Not bad for up here. It can be down to -20 this time of year..

How is the skiing?

DeanT - Posted - 12/23/2015:  16:29:31

Still summer in Kansas... but they say snow by the weekend

I haven't been out to the ski hills yet,Bill. I'm sure they have enough snow in the Banff area. Up to 111 cm. now.

A few of the areas up north are open with a few runs, but when I checked their sites, you had to hike down from the end of the snow to the lifts. Wearing ski boots and carrying skis?  I don't think so.

dat - Posted - 12/24/2015:  06:23:38

warmer than usual, but it has been cool as normal up until this week

DeanT - Posted - 12/24/2015:  08:37:48

I almost have to mow my grass it's been so warm

dat - Posted - 12/24/2015:  08:51:58

we mowed about a week and a half ago, just to even out the weeds and chop up leaves, should be the last time 'till around the first of March or so.   unless I decide to chop up more leaves

Some of the spring flowers are starting to bloom.

DeanT - Posted - 12/24/2015:  15:20:28

yep, we are starting to see trees and bushes with buds

OM45GE - Posted - 12/25/2015:  03:07:53

They're worried about the apple trees, when the freeze does come it can kill the buds so no apples.

DeanT - Posted - 12/25/2015:  05:16:45

That would be fine for our mulberry trees.

I just saw another thing that said the bears haven't gone into their dens to hibernate yet.

We put the top down on the convertible and went to look at the Christmas lights last night. I took another long ride today. Top down on Christmas in New England. Who would have thought?

DeanT - Posted - 12/25/2015:  16:25:03

Looks like summer might end in Kansas tomorrow, snow by tomorrow night

dmiller - Posted - 12/25/2015:  21:15:01

"Mama Nature" hasn't made up her mind around these parts yet. One week it's "warm" (upper 30° temps) and then down to the low 20°'s, and then right back up again.  It isn't "convertible top down weather" by any means, but it also surely isn't the cold winter weather we're used to this last week of December.

dmiller - Posted - 12/25/2015:  21:55:42

The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon  is an annual event happening here at the end of January.  As of right now there's not any snow for the dogs to pull the sleds and drivers on over the (almost) 400 miles of "racetrack" through the woods from here in  Duluth to the Canadian border, and back.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/26/2015:  05:02:14

They're predicting temperatures closer to normal around Tuesday with perhaps a few inches of snow in the mountains.

-5 *F on the northern prairies. I'm heading for Arizona soon and get out of this cold for 6 weeks.

DeanT - Posted - 12/26/2015:  12:27:59

buy me a new Ford Truck and let me see if that's true :)

I'm usually happier when I have enough money than when I don't.

DeanT - Posted - 12/26/2015:  16:46:42

I'm happier when my car runs. Cracked block this week, my old car is toast

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/26/2015:  17:06:49

Cracked block? What happened - rad leak and engine got too hot for too long? Up here it's usually because the rad fluid antifreeze wasn't mixed for very cold temps.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/26/2015:  17:50:55

The last time I had a cracked block it was more of a fist sized hole after I threw a rod in my FIAT 128. Yes, I know, Fix IAgain Tony.

DeanT - Posted - 12/26/2015:  17:53:10

No idea how or why it happened. Never overheated. Last week it blew the head gasket. Replaced head gasket, timing cover gasket, and water pump. Two miles down the road it blew a freeze plug out. Replaced the freeze plug, and it blew the cap off the reservoir about 10 miles down the road. Pressure checked good. Flushed and back flushed several times. The coolant system is getting pressurized somehow, and I'm out of money and patience for the old car. I drove the wheels off it for 18 years, so it was a good run. My brother-in-law drives the same model Taurus sedan (mine is a wagon), and he's been chomping at the bit to get my wagon for parts. I told him today he can have the damn thing.

dmiller - Posted - 12/26/2015:  19:22:10

What'cha going to replace it with?

DeanT - Posted - 12/26/2015:  19:52:45

I have no idea. Borrowing a even older Honda Civic from a friend, until I can find something. Prefer a pre-1980 Ford truck.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/26/2015:  20:07:14

Here's one for $9950 , low mileage, 302 cu. in.  It's in Iowa.

That's what I want, but too much for my current situation! I'm thinking beat up, but mechanically sound

OM45GE - Posted - 12/27/2015:  09:08:16

There's a 1978 Ford in Martinsville, MO for $1,350 that doesn't look bad:

OM45GE - Posted - 12/27/2015:  11:33:22

How far is that from where you live?

DeanT - Posted - 12/27/2015:  13:24:09

299.6 miles which is a 4.3 hour drive... isn't google amazing?

OM45GE - Posted - 12/27/2015:  13:49:09

It is indeed. You'll have to drive around the block to make it an even 300.

Would a 1987 Dodge Dakota 4x4 (rusty with 92,000 miles) be of interest?  It used to be mine/ I sold it to a friend a few months ago/ he got divorced and gave the truck to his ex/ she decided (right away) to get rid of it/ asking 1,000 for it.  I could probably talk her down to 5 or 600 bucks since I know that she got it for free, and is just looking for money.  It doesn't look like much, but it's a good runner and was always my "go to" vehicle when we got 12 or so inches of snow.

duluth.craigslist.org/cto/5363224893.html

(edited to add - - - > > > )  It isn't a manual.  It's an automatic.  She also broke the back window of the topper out, but you don't see that in the pictures posted.  The tranny was replaced about 3,000 or so miles ago and is virtually new and the tires have a lot of life (tread) left in them.  When I sold it, the topper was intact, and the hubcaps were all in the bed of the truck.   Shucks - - I may just give a call and buy it back for myself!  I couldn't believe that my friend just gave it to his ex the way he did. They were only married for a VERY short time before he discovered her "true colors".   She was (is) not a kind person.

Thanks you for the offer! But I'm not ready to pull the trigger on anything yet, as there are so many directions I might go. I've talked to the guy I'm borrowing the Honda from, and I have a sneeking suspicion that he might either offer it to me super cheap, or might even give it to me. He's already told me It's mine to use as long as I want, and to take my time. He's got 3 other cars, and this one had just been sitting there since he retired (it was his work car) in 07. He drives it around every month or so just to keep it going. And then there's my Brother-in-law the eternal optimistic mechanic, who thinks he can help me fix my car. It's been a thought, but I'm getting to old, and no longer have the patience to have a car ripped apart for months in my garage. He also trying to convince me to put a rebuilt engine in it. I don't think the old car is worth that, who know's what's next to blow. He has always wanted the car, but he's out of state right now, so I don't know how serious he is... keeping in mind that it currently runs, and can make it to a car place as a trade in. Heck Car-Max buys cars outright, and just gave a friend of ours over $1000 for a even older more beat up Suburban. Some extra cash would go a long ways helping to find me another vehicle. If my B-I-L gets his hands on it, the chances are good it will be in a million pieces in his back yard for years. So for now, my immediate plans are to drive the old Honda, take a deep breath, and see how things play out... while saving up for whatever happens next...

OM45GE - Posted - 12/28/2015:  10:11:50

I've had a couple of Hondas. As long as the tin worm doesn't get them, they can go forever.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/28/2015:  11:29:19

Do cars rust out much in the Wichita area? Probably not as bad as up north where there's lots of salt on the roads for 4 to 5 months a year.

DeanT - Posted - 12/28/2015:  12:33:07

Cars don't rust out at all here. That's why good old cars are hard to find... folks keep them. And if they do sell them, the folks up north pay a pretty penny for them. I used to be able to buy old running junkers for $200 all day. These days the same cars are fetching $4000+.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/28/2015:  13:03:34

I brought a 1967 Ford pickup back from Colorado around 1990. The body was perfect. After eight or ten winters up here it wouldn't pass inspection because of all the rust.
