Oh man, sorry to hear about Mr. Quimby, but hey you gave him a great life! He can go say hi my Dog Twiggy who crossed the bridge last December, and my two birds Jelly Bean and Groupy who died last month. They were Starlings we raised when they fell out of their nest. They lived 11 years, and died within a month of eachother. They'd love to make some kitty friends on the other side!

how old was Mr Q anyway?     it ain't easy with any of them, but when you've had one that long, it's rough

OM45GE - Posted - 05/12/2016:  02:26:27

Sorry about Mr. Quimby.  It's never easy.

He was 13.  I see all these people online posting about their 18 and 20 year old cats, but somehow mine seem to be going well before that.

The other kitty I lost a couple months ago was only 7.  I think it was a heart attack, or whatever the equivalent is for cats.  I came home from work and she was dead.

chuckv97 - Posted - 05/12/2016:  07:18:21

Sorry to hear about your loss. Pets are special - tough to lose them.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/12/2016:  09:59:04

Amen to that.

DeanT - Posted - 05/12/2016:  11:02:34

we had one make it to 20, her littermate only made it to 14. We lost another at 12. Our current kitty is 12 and diabetic and gets insulin shots every day, but seems to be doing good. We've lost greyhounds at 11, and the latest was only 4 when she died from a tick born disease.

Do you all buy pet health insurance?

DeanT - Posted - 05/12/2016:  19:41:33

nope, never have

dmiller - Posted - 05/12/2016:  20:19:47

My condolences also for Mr. Q.  It's no fun losing a four-legged family member.

My two little sisters (many years ago when they were around 8 or so years old), showed up back at our house after playing in the neighborhood one day with a kitten that "followed them home".  That cat lived for another 22 years or so.  I had a cat (before they had that one) that disappeared one day, and we found him under a big evergreen tree in the front yard several days later.  He was (maybe) 9 or 10 years old when he left us.

My company offers it as a benefit but I've never bought it.

DeanT - Posted - 05/13/2016:  06:19:15

we are about due for another stray dog or cat... it's been awhile. Our Shih-Tzu was our last stray that found us in 2012. She's a really good dog

dat - Posted - 05/13/2016:  07:53:46

I think the best dogs are free, seems like the ones I've paid for died young

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/13/2016:  08:00:50

I've never had pet insurance, although I was at the vet yesterday with another of my critters and thinking that maybe I should.  The final bill for Q plus the charges for Petoskey yesterday was over $1000.  Ouch!

The only time in my life that I found a stray was once when I was driving back from a wedding.  I was about 2 hours from home and found two dogs playing in the median of the highway.  I caught them and brought them home with me.  The next day I drove all the way back down there and dropped them off at the nearest shelter, because I figured that was the best chance they had for being reclaimed by their owner.  The shelter gave me a hard time about it.  They wanted to charge me for bringing an animal in from out of county.  I think they thought I was dumping my own pets.  I tried really hard to explain that I was trying to do the right thing.  I still sometimes think I should have either tried to find them a home myself or just left them on the highway to find their own way home.

Years ago a friend of ours had her dog caught without tags and taken to the pound. The next Sunday we went over there and I climbed in through a window and let all the dogs out. They were happy to see me, and raced out the open door. Next day it was on the local town radio station news asking if anyone knew something about it to contact the police. (I'm still looking over my shoulder). True story, BTW.

dat - Posted - 05/13/2016:  08:46:46

yeah, they probably still have a case open and are still looking for you,   while they close the cases and quit looking for the drug dealers and thieves  after a week

DeanT - Posted - 05/13/2016:  16:59:21

I wish I would have been there to take some of the dogs home!

chuckv97 - Posted - 05/13/2016:  17:28:18

You would have loved it Dean. I didn't remember what my friend's dog looked like, so I was opening two cages at a time and letting them out the door. They took off into the nearby woods....and probably got rounded up the next week by the dog catcher. It was in Fort MacMurray in the '70's when a lot of transient workers came up there and probably didn't bother getting tags for the summer , then they cleared out in Sept. without wanting to pay to get their dogs out of the pound.

DeanT - Posted - 05/13/2016:  19:28:39

sounds like something straight out of a movie... :)

chuckv97 - Posted - 05/13/2016:  20:02:49

Ya, that's where we got the idea - can't remember the movie now, but I think the guy that played Hutch from Starsky and Hutch was in it.

My first truck driving job back in the early 1970's was for a Jewish gangster out of Boston. Lots of stories from that gig. What your story reminded me of Chuck, was a time one of the owners friends got arrestEd for stealing a trailer load of frozen crab meat it was on a Saturday night and the cops put the trailer in their impound yard. Sunday night my boss stole the trailer out of the impound yard. They had to drop the charges for lack of evidence.

DeanT - Posted - 05/14/2016:  06:23:10

The crab meat would have fed a lot of escaped dogs!

dat - Posted - 05/14/2016:  07:15:19

I wonder how much had thawed out

chuckv97 - Posted - 05/14/2016:  08:49:10

Yeah, let's hope the cops filled the refer tank

dat - Posted - 05/14/2016:  09:24:46

around here even fully frozen and stacked tight, the sun and heat does wonders to make water out of ice pretty quick

OM45GE - Posted - 05/14/2016:  12:38:20

The reefer was still running. We had a terminal on the Long Island side of the East River in NYC. The boss took the trailer down there sold the crab and chopped the trailer.

Cool!  cool

OM45GE - Posted - 05/16/2016:  03:29:20

Another time he asked the night dispatcher and me to stay overnight and call him if anyone drove into the back yard - and NOT to call the police. When he came in in the morning he went into the back yard and came back with a case of Cutty Sark whiskey for each of us. No tax stamps on the bottles. The theft of the trailer was in the news the next day.

DeanT - Posted - 05/16/2016:  06:23:39

I could use him when I need dog food

chuckv97 - Posted - 05/16/2016:  07:53:51

Everyone should work for a crooked boss once in a while. lol

OM45GE - Posted - 05/16/2016:  11:07:36

I occasionally drove him around in his Caddy Eldorado convertible. One time we were stopped at a light behind a flatbed trailer. There were four or five new chain binders sticking out of the rails of the flatbed. The boss got out and grabbed the binders. The truck driver got out and started yelling and the boss pulled a gun and told him to get back in the truck. The tossed the binders in the trunk and told me to turn down a side street and drive away slowly.

I asked him what he would have done if the driver had a gun and he said, "Well, I guess we would have had a gunfight" with a sly grin on his face. It was a hell of an education for a 20 year old.

I was going to ask what business your boss was in, but now I don't think I want to know!  shock big

dat - Posted - 05/16/2016:  13:57:41

I had a boss that would bet on the horses, but he lost more than he made, so I don't think he was to crooked of a guy

chuckv97 - Posted - 05/16/2016:  15:24:57

The only crooked bosses I had were the ones whose pay cheques bounced...ggrrr

DeanT - Posted - 05/16/2016:  17:39:43

I never had a crooked boss, how boring. But then, in the AF crooked folks didn't last very long

It was a trucking company. They hauled air freight and ocean containers up and down the east coast.

There was a city owned light pole with a high intensity light in an empty lot behind our shop. Harvey (the boss) had had one of the mechanics tie into the feed to the light and was running everything but the lights off the stolen electricity.  One night some kids set a fire in the empty lot that burned up the wires. The lineman from the electric company quickly saw the illegal wires and came down from the pole to call it in. Harvey took him in the office. I don't know what he gave him, but the lineman went back up the pole and hooked everything back up.

chuckv97 - Posted - 05/16/2016:  18:06:19

An offer he couldn't refuse?

OM45GE - Posted - 05/16/2016:  18:17:45

He used to call everyone "pineapple head". It wasn't a compliment.

DeanT - Posted - 05/16/2016:  19:47:16

he had that gun in his office

OM45GE - Posted - 05/17/2016:  03:25:35

I lost track of him after I took another job (with a legal company), but I had heard he moved to Israel after things got too hot for him here. 20 years later I was selling a bunch of trailers at another trucking company that I was running and Harvey showed up to look at them. He recognized me and said he always thought I would do ok. He didn't buy any of the trailers.

DeanT - Posted - 05/17/2016:  06:19:29

and they didn't disappear that night?

dat - Posted - 05/17/2016:  06:20:33

Could be that he made another deal instead

OM45GE - Posted - 05/17/2016:  06:28:05

No, they didn't disappear. Maybe he went straight.

DeanT - Posted - 05/17/2016:  11:51:09

no way!

dat - Posted - 05/17/2016:  12:33:47

probably just a better crook, you just thought he was looking at the trailers, no tellin what he got taken care of while he was there

OM45GE - Posted - 05/17/2016:  13:43:40

LOL. Good point. We used to keep them at a truck leasing facility. Maybe he cleaned them out.

DeanT - Posted - 05/18/2016:  04:29:14

He probably got into politics

OM45GE - Posted - 05/18/2016:  05:34:33

LOL. He would probably do well.
