Oh, I thought you meant some type of glasses you can buy. Mine isn't too troublesome yet, but eventually will probably get cataract surgery - my Dad did in his 70's.

OM45GE - Posted - 02/20/2016:  13:46:28

No. They don't have those that I'm aware of. The material that forms cataracts often gathers in the fluid around the new lenses. That's happening to me. They break it up with lasers. I guess I'll have to schedule that.

Sometimes I looks at folks that are almost 100 years old, and wonder how they made it that far

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/20/2016:  18:40:15

My grandpa retired from his little farm at 87, my grandmother lived to be 99. Maybe I still have time to be a "contendah".

DeanT - Posted - 02/20/2016:  18:51:12

I don't know of any relatives that have made it into the 90's so I'm probably doomed!

dmiller - Posted - 02/20/2016:  22:01:21

Back around 98 or 99 I went in for my first ever eye exam at a LensCrafters, and they hit me up with bifocals immediately.  Took some getting used to (especially night driving) but I got used to them over the years.  Neither of my Grandmas or Grandpas wore glasses  and Grandma Miller lived into her mid 90's and the other three weren't far behind in age when they passed.

Talking about eyesight (coupling that with eye to hand co-ordination), I saw this video on Facebook tonight.  I was impressed.  I don't know how drivers like you do this sort of thing, Chuck.  I suppose after a while it gets to be second nature, but it's still cool to see a driver get it right the first try.    yes

youtu.be/xzkWTcDZFH0        Yeah, I've done a few of those backups, but never in one shot like that. It's not as hard with a day cab like that one, because the wheel base is shorter, with better maneuverability.  How about these truckers? LOL!!

which truck was yours?  approve

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/22/2016:  07:35:21

Had a truck driving friend who phoned me at 11pm one night about 10 years ago. He was in Chicago and said he'd just smashed into a low bridge - "the sound and feelings I got when it hit just totally sank my heart" he muttered with a groan.

OM45GE - Posted - 02/22/2016:  08:20:55

When I was driving OTR we used to challenge each other to back into tight spots in truck stops. I haven't driven a truck in years but I've put my skills to use at boat ramps more than a few times.

dat - Posted - 02/22/2016:  08:51:05

I never have really been good at backing with mirrors, but when I turn and look over my right shoulder I can back up pretty well,  never have made a living driving, most of my backing has been for fun at the boat ramp and just with a 16 ft trailer at home.

my trailer is 6 inches narrower than my barn door, so 3 inches on each side gives me plenty of clearance

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/22/2016:  09:08:00

That's (dat's) pretty tight. I used to deliver in Manhattan years ago with a big straight truck, and had to push in my side mirrors to back into some alleys.

OM45GE - Posted - 02/22/2016:  10:40:21

When I was managing a furniture manufacturer, we had a road driver come in who couldn't back up to save his life. We were in an old mill building and the docks were built out of the sides of the building. You had to back down an alley to get to them. This driver had spent about 45 minutes not getting into the dock and we had other trucks waiting. He'd hit the building three times when I told him he either had to let me put it in the dock or leave after filling out an accident report. He was pissed but got out of the cab. He had his mirrors all screwed up so you couldn't tell where you were at all. I pulled out of the alley, straightened out the mirrors and put it in first shot. He was not happy but never said a word.

Why I'm not a truck driver...

dat - Posted - 02/22/2016:  10:49:56

not much he could have said,

we were goose hunting one time and a lone goose flew by, we all unloaded on him and we all missed, the goose gained altitude quick, the guy at the end of the field that actually was normally out of range hollered out that none of could shoot worth a crap, only a little more harsh, then he sky blasted and dropped the goose with one shot. not much we could say after that

OM45GE - Posted - 02/22/2016:  11:49:46

Nothing to say to that except nice shooting.

When I walked Toby this morning there must have been 250 geese camped out on one of the ball fields at the school. I never shot a game bird on the ground, but if someone had been so inclined they could have bagged a bunch of them with one shot.

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/22/2016:  11:59:23

The guy I mentioned a while back that took potential buyers on a test ride trying to sell his pickup, and then was murdered? I thought they cut his body up, but they incinerated it in this "Eliminator". Gruesome,,,sort of like the movie "Fargo".

How did they figure out what happened to him if the evidence went up in smoke?

dat - Posted - 02/23/2016:  05:44:57

funny tasting bbq?

dmiller - Posted - 02/23/2016:  08:32:51

The secret is in the sauce.

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/23/2016:  08:42:49

The forensics crawled inside that sucker and managed to scrape up some bone fragments that were left. Reminds me of the time I worked for a farm machinery repair outfit and they had me crawl into a liquid manure spreader to change a part,, it was empty but not steam cleaned. What a reek - I wasn't long working for those guys.

DeanT - Posted - 02/23/2016:  09:31:15

shoveled my share of that stuff on the farm

dat - Posted - 02/23/2016:  10:07:59

I deal with plenty myself, sometimes I think I would rather shovel it

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/23/2016:  10:43:05

That liquid pig manure is wicked ,it's intense. Normal manure out of barn stalls don't bother me much.

dat - Posted - 02/23/2016:  15:20:32

a friend of mine that has chicken houses got an incinerator to get rid of his dead chickens, he had to go through all kinds of checks and licenses to get approved to have one, it cost him quite a bit but he has less work and smell from tilling them up in the ground

DeanT - Posted - 02/23/2016:  16:38:25

We recently had a dog cremated by the local shelter, $97. Damn. Your friend could go into business

OM45GE - Posted - 02/24/2016:  03:28:08

I just saw a news item about a guy who legally changed his name to "Bacon Double Cheeseburger".

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/24/2016:  04:46:46

His next name will be "Heartstopper"

dat - Posted - 02/24/2016:  05:48:27

that's his wife's name

OM45GE - Posted - 02/24/2016:  11:39:41

He said it was the result of too much drinking, but I wonder how long you have to stay drunk to see something like that through.

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/24/2016:  12:09:44

I was having a few with a workplace friend years ago and bet him $20 I'd go into work the next day with half my beard shaved off- one side of my face from nose and chin midpoint shaved, the other side bearded. I got home and shaved it that way, - next morning sober/ hungover ,I didn't want to go in like that, but didn't want to back out of the bet. The looks I got at work were pretty sketchy.

dat - Posted - 02/24/2016:  12:20:34

I have told people things that weren't in my best interest when I was drinking, but I followed through when I was sober, knowing I did it to myself

OM45GE - Posted - 02/24/2016:  12:33:18

That can lead to tears.

DeanT - Posted - 02/24/2016:  13:48:29

precisely why I don't drink anymore. It's nice to wake up and not wonder

dat - Posted - 02/24/2016:  14:16:26

I kinda like waking up and knowing how I got to where I was sleeping

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/24/2016:  14:46:44

Yeah,, like "how did I end up behind bars without shoes and sporting a black eye."

DeanT - Posted - 02/24/2016:  15:13:26

It's also nice to wake up and there is still money in my wallet

dat - Posted - 02/25/2016:  05:51:38

yep, the same two dollars that were there before

OM45GE - Posted - 02/25/2016:  05:52:53

A long time friend of mine's husband was unemployed back in the 70's. She was pregnant with their second child. He just got his unemployment check and went on a job interview in his only suit. The interview went poorly and he cashed the check and went to the Combat Zone in Boston - what used to be an adult district. He got drunk and ended up in a hotel room with a hooker. She helped him undress and laid his suit on a chair by the window and got in bed. An accomplice was on the fire escape outside and grabbed the suit with his wallet, all his unemployment money and his car keys.

He managed to talk the hooker into getting him a pair of pants. She came back with a pair of tight skinny jeans about three sizes to small and left. He had to go to the police station and call his wife to come get him with the spare car keys and explain what happened. That must have been an interesting conversation. They're still married forty years later.

DeanT - Posted - 02/25/2016:  06:04:43

lucky he still had a car!

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/25/2016:  06:11:55

That kind of stuff is usually a marriage-buster

dat - Posted - 02/25/2016:  06:24:41

I did a lot of stupid things, but never stepped out with anybody else.   I drank a lot, stayed out late at the deer lease or duck camp, all kinds of stuff when I should have been home, but that's something I never would do, that trust isn't worth breaking

OM45GE - Posted - 02/25/2016:  11:10:26

I've known Louise since grammar school when they moved in next door to us. She's a great person. Her husband is a good guy too, but I still wonder how they made it through that.

dat - Posted - 02/25/2016:  11:52:24

had to have help from above to get through that one and still stay married, normally that ends up in a divorce

chuckv97 - Posted - 02/25/2016:  12:19:40

Some people can forgive more easily than I can. If she just chalked it up to drunkeness and it never happened again I guess things slowly smoothed over.

OM45GE - Posted - 02/25/2016:  13:25:23

Maybe she just didn't mind. Her father was known to stop and smell the roses from time to time.

dat - Posted - 02/25/2016:  14:19:52

my bride would neuter me

DeanT - Posted - 02/25/2016:  16:57:52

I never forgave, no second chances. #1 cheated on my when I was in Basic training. #2 cheated on me when I was TDY, #3 left me for her drug dealer. 3 up 3 down.
