It blows me away that we see starlight from stars that burned out millions of years ago. The light is just getting to us now. Whew
DeanT - Posted - 11/06/2015: 19:04:06
The photographs from Hubble showing hundreds of galaxies in a pin prick of the sky is my mind blower.

There's definitely more to "This Old World" than we all originally thought.
dat - Posted - 11/07/2015: 06:32:23
This world is not my home I'm just a-passin' through
My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue
The angels beckon me from heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore
DeanT - Posted - 11/07/2015: 07:23:06
I certainly don't feel at home in this world anymore. I want my rotary phone, points and condenser, 3 channels, black and white world back, with 28 cent a gallon gas and cheezy cartoons at the Drive-In.
dat - Posted - 11/07/2015: 07:53:35
I am sure with you on those,
I am slacking on my fatherly duties, our youngest girl didn't know how to use a bottle opener on a coke ice box, she looked at it with the bottled coke with that deer in headlight look, I finally had to show her, which I should have years ago, but never thought about not having the need
OM45GE - Posted - 11/07/2015: 10:54:32
I just explained to Ethan that "cc" on e-mails meant "Carbon Copy". Then I had to explain about carbon paper.
DeanT - Posted - 11/07/2015: 11:56:31
I have to laugh every time I hear a older news reporter say "caught on tape". Really?
chuckv97 - Posted - 11/07/2015: 13:51:35
I used to love buying an LP, tearing the plastic off, and gently dropping the needle on that big black disc on the turntable. Then read the liner notes on the back a few times. Golden moments.....letting the music sink in.

My older brother was the neatoholic,,he had the cleaning kit and the little attachable brush on the side of the stylus unit- if you put your thumb print on an LP he'd have a flying conniption. lol
DeanT - Posted - 11/08/2015: 16:52:38
We used to record our LP's onto cassette tape when they were brand new, and then put them away, and wear out the tapes.
OM45GE - Posted - 11/09/2015: 03:41:16
I still have my old record cleaning kit. No turntable or LP's - just the kit.

the walkman was amazing, small compact portable, and three times the size of anything now
chuckv97 - Posted - 11/09/2015: 05:56:55
When I first listened to a Walkman I couldn't believe how great the sound was
dat - Posted - 11/09/2015: 06:39:57
the walkman was almost as good as getting Pong video game on the TV
DeanT - Posted - 11/09/2015: 10:13:59
The FM radio-mp3 player I run with now is half the size of a credit card, and clips to the bill of my hat, and holds like 8000 songs

Can batteries be recycled or are they useless after they're dead?
OM45GE - Posted - 11/10/2015: 03:37:02
They can be recycled but I've heard it costs more than the value of the materials. Out town is heavy into recycling but they tell us to toss them into the trash.
dat - Posted - 11/10/2015: 06:02:35
yeah, it says on the package to not throw away, but the recyclers don't want them either
chuckv97 - Posted - 11/10/2015: 08:25:59
There's a bin at the recycling depot where I live specifically for batteries, but who knows where they go after that- maybe in with the rest of the trash.

recycle collection finished,
DeanT - Posted - 11/10/2015: 09:54:51
They actually charge more here, to take recyclables. Yeah right. I throw the crap in my trash, and pay one flat fee. I split it all up into color coded special bins, and you want to charge me more? Yeah hold your freaking breath on that... and folks wonder why no one recycles around here. Reduce my trash bill by the amount I recycle... and I'll be a recycling fool.
dat - Posted - 11/10/2015: 10:06:16
they don't charge here, but you have to go by the recycle drop off spot, I just put it all in one trash bag,
dat - Posted - 11/10/2015: 11:01:26
even though recycling is a good thing, it isn't always the best, it can take up as many resources as you save
DeanT - Posted - 11/10/2015: 17:21:37
They need to make it worth our while, before they will get a meaningful amount of participation.
dmiller - Posted - 11/10/2015: 21:49:04
I don't "generate" much trash. I have one small bag from your typical kitchen waste paper basket (18" tall) that isn't even half way full even after 3 weeks. Since it's one small bag so infrequently, they don't mind if I put in the trash can there at work Recycling is a different story.
I have enough glass (beer bottles)/ newspapers/ cardboard/ plastic/ etc./ that I just run it up to the local "material recovery" landfill myself. It's free for those of us who live here in town, and it's just two miles from my work place so its a win/ win for me. Plus - - they have an area there where perfectly good stuff (furniture/ household goods/ computer chairs/ kitchen ware/ etc. is yours for the taking. There were times when I left there with more stuff than I came in there with!
DeanT - Posted - 11/11/2015: 11:34:56
Our landfill is like a fortress, you can't get anywhere near it
dat - Posted - 11/11/2015: 12:31:18
same here, if you live in town you can make one trip a month, take your water bill as proof, sign in/ sign out, they look through your stuff to make sure it is junk, I don't live in town, so I use the dumpster at work, it all ends up in the same place without the security checks
chuckv97 - Posted - 11/11/2015: 15:35:34
As kids we used to go to the dump- an old grouchy guy that worked there would let us root around for good stuff. After about an hour he'd yell at us to beat it.
DeanT - Posted - 11/11/2015: 15:44:38
I used to ride around town on trash day, looking for old bikes and bike parts on peoples trash piles.
OM45GE - Posted - 11/12/2015: 06:27:23
Our town has "single stream" recycling so we put everything into one bin and they do curbside pick up. The town gets paid for the recycling vs paying by the ton for trash.
The trash goes to a high tech incinerator that generates electricity for the area.
DeanT - Posted - 11/12/2015: 09:40:54
Wow... that's better than the Mt. Trashmore's we have at multiple landfills
dat - Posted - 11/12/2015: 11:22:45
they fill in low spots, mix in dirt and drive over and over with the excavators and packers, we end up with a flat spot that used to be a nice valley, they do rebuild a little creek to keep the water going in pretty much the same direction
DeanT - Posted - 11/12/2015: 17:58:33
They just build trash piles here and then move to a new one every 20 years or so.
chuckv97 - Posted - 11/12/2015: 18:38:24
There's a trash hill near Saskatoon that they made into a ski hill
OM45GE - Posted - 11/13/2015: 04:33:26
My High School was built on a capped landfill. Tires used to migrate up through the soil and pop up in the middle of the playing fields.
chuckv97 - Posted - 11/13/2015: 06:43:10
I wonder how much toxic crap is buried in those old landfills
dat - Posted - 11/13/2015: 07:19:05
or how much heat and gas they generate from the rotting decomposing garbage
