I'm ready for October... enough with the heat already

OM45GE - Posted - 08/18/2014:  07:13:58

We have had an incredible summer. There have been only two days in the 90's and none so far in August. Clear skies and dry air.

DeanT - Posted - 08/18/2014:  10:09:22

our entire extended forecast is for 100+ every day...

OM45GE - Posted - 08/18/2014:  10:30:41

Well, you pretty much just talked me out of moving to Kansas.

dat - Posted - 08/18/2014:  14:34:55

ya'll do get nice little breezes through there though, some breezes good enough to move a house

DeanT - Posted - 08/18/2014:  16:02:37

right now they are called blast furnace

OM45GE - Posted - 08/18/2014:  17:09:30

That's a good term for a 100 degree wind.

DeanT - Posted - 08/18/2014:  18:20:14

Chapped lips in minutes...

OM45GE - Posted - 08/19/2014:  02:58:55

We've got another day in the 70's with low humidity and sunny skies. It's 55 outside right now.

DeanT - Posted - 08/19/2014:  05:44:59

that's downright chilly

OM45GE - Posted - 08/19/2014:  07:21:09

Yeah, good for sleeping. We'll be in the 70's later.

dat - Posted - 08/19/2014:  10:08:47

70 would be nice,  I really can't complain, it's hot and humid, but not near like it usually is this time of year

DeanT - Posted - 08/19/2014:  10:30:45

97 here...

dat - Posted - 08/19/2014:  10:55:32

only 94 here, usually over the 100 mark by this time last month,  I don't think we've hit 100 yet this year here

OM45GE - Posted - 08/19/2014:  11:00:37

The weather reporters up here make it sound like you all are baking in the heat.

DeanT - Posted - 08/19/2014:  14:05:11

medium well

OM45GE - Posted - 08/19/2014:  15:30:12

LOL

dat - Posted - 08/20/2014:  08:42:15

we have had more rain this summer than I ever remember having, we haven't even had a burn ban yet

OM45GE - Posted - 08/20/2014:  08:46:56

I read that quickly and thought you said you hadn't had a barn burn yet.

dat - Posted - 08/20/2014:  09:13:00

a couple of years ago there was 18 thousand acres that burned because a guy with a bad wheel bearing on his trailer pulled over on the side of the highway, a spark from the bearing caught the grass on fire, it took two weeks to put it out

OM45GE - Posted - 08/20/2014:  09:21:19

That sounds nasty.

We had something similar but not near as bad a while back when they parked in tall grass at a hiking trail head. They had lost the heat shield off their catalytic converter and it set the grass on fire. It burned a few acres.

DeanT - Posted - 08/20/2014:  10:02:02

Happens in Kansas a lot. Farmers burning off their fields and it gets out of hand. Black ash everywhere in the air

OM45GE - Posted - 08/20/2014:  11:53:17

Add some wind and let the fun begin.

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/20/2014:  16:32:22

Up in northern Ontario the forests used to burn constantly from sparks caused by passing trains. Also by lightning, and sometimes even started by local layabouts needing a few weeks wages fighting fires.

OM45GE - Posted - 08/20/2014:  16:57:23

Odd sort of job security.

DeanT - Posted - 08/20/2014:  17:57:24

we went from drought to soggy this summer. I don't remember everything ever being this green in August

dat - Posted - 08/21/2014:  05:42:57

or having to mow the grass this much in August

OM45GE - Posted - 08/21/2014:  08:26:01

I have 1,182 days until retirement, but who's counting?

dat - Posted - 08/21/2014:  09:57:14

1,182 days..........  ? hours......... ? min.......... ? sec

DeanT - Posted - 08/21/2014:  10:06:49

retirement is very tiring.... so rest up!

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/21/2014:  10:17:05

Don't think I'll totally retire if I stay in good health. Maybe work only 6 months a year. I turned 65 last month- feeling as good as I did 10 years ago. Also I don't have enough pension built up to do the things I want to do.

I used to say I would just keep working because I really loved my job. Four years ago the biopharmaceutical company I worked for was bought by one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world and suddenly I was part of a 120,000 person global company. I still like what I do, but I HATE the BIG company bureaucracy. My job is 95% administrivia now.

DeanT - Posted - 08/21/2014:  19:13:21

I was a casualty of the modernizing of the AF.

dmiller - Posted - 08/21/2014:  20:51:28

The boys are back in town.  The Navy Blue Angels showed up yesterday for an Air show that is being put on this weekend.  It's pretty amazing just watching them "practice" in these couple of days before the show!  They're flying all over town and out over Lake Superior and if you're outside at all, there ain't a bad seat in the house!

DeanT - Posted - 08/21/2014:  23:02:42

I used to love them at out base's yearly air show. Sometimes it would be the Blue Angels, and sometimes the Thunderbirds

OM45GE - Posted - 08/22/2014:  05:20:26

Amazing pilots.

DeanT - Posted - 08/22/2014:  06:06:49

Blue Angels were always better... and I was AF!

dat - Posted - 08/22/2014:  08:25:35

I saw the thunderbirds years ago, the same time I saw President Ford at Barksdale AFB,  I disremember the year, but I was a young pup

OM45GE - Posted - 08/22/2014:  11:02:29

I'm glad they are flying again.

DeanT - Posted - 08/22/2014:  15:49:04

There's a lot of stuff I'd like to disremember

My brother says the same thing.

dmiller - Posted - 08/22/2014:  20:03:10

He (my brother) was in town today.  He's a captain for Delta, and he flew a flight into town with a 32 hour layover before he flies out again.  We went up there to watch them practice today, but the ceiling (I think that's what you call it) was at 200 feet (a foggy day here in Duluth) and there wasn't no way nohow that they could see any higher than that.  It was thick.  Hopefully it'll be clear enough here tomorrow for the day of the show.

OM45GE - Posted - 08/23/2014:  10:20:41

In the clip it didn't look as though they were wearing G Suits.

DeanT - Posted - 08/23/2014:  15:30:03

They used to totally rattle our apartment when we lived near the AF base. They were so low you could see inside the cockpit

OM45GE - Posted - 08/23/2014:  17:54:27

We were sailing in the Chesapeake Bay one time and two Navy fighters went by so low and close it looked like they were going to hit our 60 foot mast. They were going to fast to see much inside.

DeanT - Posted - 08/23/2014:  18:48:18

One of my squadrons F16's had part of it's tail cut off by a radio tower guy-wire... but made it home ok

OM45GE - Posted - 08/23/2014:  19:03:31

That's amazing. Lucky guy.

My dad was a pilot in WW II.  He got in trouble for flying under the Golden Gate Bridge, but he never hit any guy wires.

dmiller - Posted - 08/23/2014:  19:32:14

Well - - this whole area was socked in with fog today and

the show was cancelled. High hopes for a better day tomorrow
