a couple of years ago there was 18 thousand acres that burned because a guy with a bad wheel bearing on his trailer pulled over on the side of the highway, a spark from the bearing caught the grass on fire, it took two weeks to put it out

That sounds nasty.

We had something similar but not near as bad a while back when they parked in tall grass at a hiking trail head. They had lost the heat shield off their catalytic converter and it set the grass on fire. It burned a few acres.

Happens in Kansas a lot. Farmers burning off their fields and it gets out of hand. Black ash everywhere in the air

Up in northern Ontario the forests used to burn constantly from sparks caused by passing trains. Also by lightning, and sometimes even started by local layabouts needing a few weeks wages fighting fires.

Don't think I'll totally retire if I stay in good health. Maybe work only 6 months a year. I turned 65 last month- feeling as good as I did 10 years ago. Also I don't have enough pension built up to do the things I want to do.

I used to say I would just keep working because I really loved my job. Four years ago the biopharmaceutical company I worked for was bought by one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world and suddenly I was part of a 120,000 person global company. I still like what I do, but I HATE the BIG company bureaucracy. My job is 95% administrivia now.

The boys are back in town.  The Navy Blue Angels showed up yesterday for an Air show that is being put on this weekend.  It's pretty amazing just watching them "practice" in these couple of days before the show!  They're flying all over town and out over Lake Superior and if you're outside at all, there ain't a bad seat in the house!

He (my brother) was in town today.  He's a captain for Delta, and he flew a flight into town with a 32 hour layover before he flies out again.  We went up there to watch them practice today, but the ceiling (I think that's what you call it) was at 200 feet (a foggy day here in Duluth) and there wasn't no way nohow that they could see any higher than that.  It was thick.  Hopefully it'll be clear enough here tomorrow for the day of the show.

They used to totally rattle our apartment when we lived near the AF base. They were so low you could see inside the cockpit

We were sailing in the Chesapeake Bay one time and two Navy fighters went by so low and close it looked like they were going to hit our 60 foot mast. They were going to fast to see much inside.

One of my squadrons F16's had part of it's tail cut off by a radio tower guy-wire... but made it home ok

That's amazing. Lucky guy.

My dad was a pilot in WW II.  He got in trouble for flying under the Golden Gate Bridge, but he never hit any guy wires.
