I'd be happy with an old VW Bug

OM45GE - Posted - 08/09/2016:  05:37:46

My first car was a '63 Beetle. Lots of memories. I used to carry a scraper for the inside of the windows in the wintertime.

dat - Posted - 08/09/2016:  06:25:43

I love the old cars like that,   they were classy

OM45GE - Posted - 08/09/2016:  07:14:46

I agree, but don't you think new cars are incredibly more reliable then they were back then? I used to carry some basic tools with me along with light bulbs, hoses and belts. I can't remember the last time I had to change a fan belt or replace a light bulb.

dat - Posted - 08/09/2016:  07:31:03

they are more reliable, they just don't have a personality as far as looks,   I have 245,000 miles on my truck, it used to be if you had 75 or 100 K it was worn out, tune up now is at 100 K and they really don't even need it then, used to be a tune up was every 10 to 12 K miles.   belts and hoses you used to change every year, now hoses are pretty much a life time hose for most people, and a belt easy can last 5 or 6 years.

reliability yes, they are better and safer,  it's just that everybody used a wind tunnel to design their cars and everybody came up with the same thing

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/09/2016:  07:39:08

Even trucks are way more reliable, esp. tires. I talked to an old time trucker who said they'd have to change their own flats on the side of the road back in the '50's. I can't see me doing that in January in Saskatchewan when it's 40 below.

OM45GE - Posted - 08/09/2016:  07:46:24

I call it the jelly bean look.

DeanT - Posted - 08/09/2016:  10:06:20

I'll take todays cars any day... I used to love working on cars, but now I hate it. I'm old and lazy, and bring my car to the local shop for an oil change and lookover every so often, and just drive the crap out of it.

OM45GE - Posted - 08/09/2016:  11:13:59

I'm the same way Dean. I used to do everything on my cars and bikes. Now I let the shop take care of it.

I agree with that.  My car was really falling apart a few months ago.  Like rusting out all over--I was figuring I was likely to be driving down the road and suddenly discover the engine had fallen out.  It was starting to make me nervous driving it.  So I went looking for a new car.

Man, they just all look the same.  I mean, this one might have a slightly flashier spoiler (why the heck do you need a spoiler on an SUV?!!!) and that one might have a prettier slant to the hood, but they all pretty much look the same.  And they come in like four colors.  It was really depressing.

I ended up with a Kia Sorento, because Consumer Reports rated it pretty highly, and because of the ones I test drove I felt the most comfortable in it.  But I really loved my last car (it was a pretty color), and this one is nice but I feel like there's nothing really special about it.  I don't have a lot of excitement in my life.  i wouldn't mind a little excitement if I'm spending that much money on a car.

dat - Posted - 08/09/2016:  14:31:57

as long as you're talking about a little excitement and spending that much money,   I always wanted a '65 Shelby Cobra 427

I wouldn't own a car that I couldn't pile all my sound equipment and instruments in... When I go to a gig, my Honda Accord trunk and back seat is full. I love that little car.

dmiller - Posted - 08/09/2016:  20:28:47

There's a guy who lives down the block from the group home, and he has (literally) 25 or so cars parked in his back yard.  All of them Cameros/ Firebirds/ and Mustangs  - - all from the 60's and the 70's.They all run, but he doesn't take them out much.  I guess he just likes collecting them, and looking at them in his back yard.

OM45GE - Posted - 08/10/2016:  03:10:15

Minnesota winters must be tough on them.

DeanT - Posted - 08/10/2016:  05:03:19

I wonder if old muscle cars are still worth what they used to be. Don't see them around much any more

dat - Posted - 08/10/2016:  06:00:38

people from Japan are buying a lot of them and shipping overseas

OM45GE - Posted - 08/10/2016:  07:57:44

They seem to be doing very well. I had a 1966 Shelby Mustang that I sold for $5,000 in the 1980's. It just sold at auction for $125,000. (cue crying sounds)

DeanT - Posted - 08/10/2016:  08:28:25

you follow your old car?

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 08/10/2016:  09:16:15

When I lived down in Virginia my landlord down there collected old MGs.  I think I counted 15 parked in my yard.  Actually they were more like MG ghosts.  They were all missing doors and windows and tops and tires and whatnot.  There was one that wasn't bad looking, except for all the rust and the duct tape holding on the door.  He did have one that ran, and he drove that some.  It was a convertible--or had been at one point.  I don't think it converted anymore.  And there was no seat on the passenger side.

He also had a couple of other cars just for variation.  There was an Austin Healey.  And a bread truck.  At one point he had 15 bread trucks.  He'd been selling them over the years and finally got down to just the one, so he moved it to my yard so he didn't need to spend money on storage.  It was a nice landmark for giving directions (that and two nude statues on the corner down the street from me) but I wasn't excited to have it in my yard.

Actually, the guy I sold it to let me know it was going up for auction because I had asked for first refusal if he ever decided to sell it. When he told be he wanted $100,000 for a direct sale, I politely declined. They only made about 2,500 66 Shelby's and there's a registry of all of them.

I had a similar thing happen with a vintage Martin I sold. It was a 1929 OM-28 prototype (one of six). I bought it for $3,000 and sold it back to the guy I bought it from ten years later for $15,000 when I needed some cash. I told him I wanted first dibs if he ever sold it again. He called me earlier this year to say he had an offer of $65,000 on it but would sell it to me for the same price. Thanks but no thanks.

only 65 K   dang, you ought to buy two

Here's what I had to face this morning - crazy, boisterous, scruffy ,rude but lovable (kind of) New York City....no other place like it.

OM45GE - Posted - 08/10/2016:  12:51:46

I know.

I've had a bunch of things I've bought at an affordable price and sold for what seemed a decent profit only to have them go through the roof later on. I'm OK with it, but if I had been getting the higher prices, I could have retired comfortably by now.

dat - Posted - 08/10/2016:  12:59:50

usually by the time I get rid of something, it's either worn out or it isn't worth anything and ready for the trash

OM45GE - Posted - 08/10/2016:  15:44:26

The biggest miss I've ever had was a 1964 FIA 289 Cobra that was offered to me for $5,000. I had the cash but my wife didn't think it was worth it. They only made five of them. Two sold at auctions last year for over a million dollars each.

DeanT - Posted - 08/10/2016:  16:11:12

I bought my Gibson ESS for $1850. A week later Earl died, and they shot up in price... and still getting near $3000 4 years later. That's the best I've done on something. But I'll never sell it. Truth be told, I'm wearing it out. It;s pretty beat up. It's getting more and more soul every day.

OM45GE - Posted - 08/11/2016:  02:37:18

I've never bought things like cars, motorcycles or musical instruments as investments. I buy them if I like them and can afford them. If they go up in value it's a bonus.

DeanT - Posted - 08/11/2016:  06:25:26

The dog in my avatar sold at auction for over $20,000, had a great racing career, and then I adopted her for $150. Best dog I've ever had. She's my alarm clock, and jumps in the bed at 6 am every morning... "get up, it's time for breakfast!"

I have some guns that would be collectors if I didn't like to shoot them, I can still get my money back and then some for them being shot,   but I bought them to hunt with, not sir on the shelf

dmiller - Posted - 08/11/2016:  07:55:06

I just bought my first pistol a few weeks ago.  I've always had rifles and shotguns, but this is the first pistol.  After a lot of looking over the many choices available, I ended up choosing 9mm and bought a H&K VP9.

HK makes good guns,  I haven't handled or shot the VP9, but if it's like their others, it's a well made pistol

My dad was an estate lawyer and gun collector. He had an elderly couple as clients. When the husband died, the wife said a gun dealer had offered her $500 for a matched pair of Parker side by side shotguns - 12 and 20 gauge. Dad told her that was way too low and gave her the name of an appraiser. A couple of months later she came by the house with the guns and gave them to my dad. He tried to refuse but she insisted. She said the price the appraiser gave her was so high it frightened her and my father had been good to them over the years. He prized them the rest of his life - and never charge her for his services.

dat - Posted - 08/11/2016:  12:47:03

nice gift,  I have handled a few Parkers, never shot one, I guess the closest to that I have shot was an L.C. Smith,  they are nice, but not in the same class as a Parker

OM45GE - Posted - 08/12/2016:  02:36:58

They sure were pretty.

My lovely bride and I just have cheapo Rossi revolvers. We aren't into shooting at all. We have them for one purpose only.

dat - Posted - 08/12/2016:  12:15:39

my bride has a S&W 686 P close and I have a Colt XSE Guvernment model close

DeanT - Posted - 08/12/2016:  17:15:35

I want one of these

dmiller - Posted - 08/12/2016:  17:19:32

I bought a Rossi Circuit Judge a few months ago.  It's a 5 shot rifle/ pistol with an 18 1/2 barrel and it shoots any 3"  410 shotgun shell, and also shoots 45 long colt ammo from the same barrel without having to change anything.  I don't hunt, but I do like to "plink" at 2 liter bottles filled with water.

dmiller - Posted - 08/14/2016:  11:30:44

I'm not fond of change, but sometimes (too often) it taps me on the shoulder and says "move on over and let me go by" and then I have to catch up to it.  I'll never catch up completely, but that's O.K.  Some folks I know call me an "old fossil".  I take that as a compliment.

DeanT - Posted - 08/14/2016:  12:18:21

I still don't have a iphone, but have begun hearing rumors that my old flip phone may be obsolete and unsupported soon.

OM45GE - Posted - 08/14/2016:  12:40:30

Supposedly the carriers are going to shut down 3G service to free up bandwidth for the faster systems. Now sure when it will happen, but if they do and your phone isn't capable of using the faster system is will be obsolete.

DeanT - Posted - 08/14/2016:  14:16:42

cool, no more spam calls, if my phone doesn't work anymore!
