Pick up is probably the right term!

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/31/2018:  10:26:24

That’s big of them...! ;-)

OM45GE - Posted - 10/31/2018:  17:50:59

I wonder what percentage of the entrants get picked up

DeanT - Posted - 11/01/2018:  07:08:13

They average 40-50 people per race, and mostly because of bike crashes or mechanical problems

OM45GE - Posted - 11/01/2018:  11:59:19

I had a crash years ago in a mountain bike race. My front tire went into a leaf-filled hole in the trail and I pivoted over and hit my head on a rock. I was knocked unconscious (no idea for who long) and woke up looking at the trees. I got up and finished the race.

Ironically, I was the ONLY rider who made the correct turn up that trail and finished first. The other riders wandered around in the woods and trickled in late. The race committee decided that, because everyone else got it wrong, they would re-run the entire race. I decided I had had enough and went home.

They owe you the trophy!

OM45GE - Posted - 11/03/2018:  04:49:10

I sort of felt the same way.

I was going very slowly when I crashed, barely above walking speed. My head hit a sharp pointed rock right on my temple which took a divot out of my helmet. I’m convinced the helmet saved my life

DeanT - Posted - 11/03/2018:  07:27:13

That's why we wear them! I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for my bike helmet... and hockey helmet when I was a kid

I’ve fell on my tailbone and back of my head a couple of times learning to skate when I was a kid - no helmet or padding. Dats why I iz like I iz....

OM45GE - Posted - 11/03/2018:  11:15:54

I had something similar happen skiing. I was getting off the lift and the guy next to me caught the tail of my ski. It pulled me around backwards doing a split and when my bindings release I hit my head hard on the ice. I think the helmet saved my noggin then too.

From last Sunday

Cool

DeanT - Posted - 11/06/2018:  17:29:42

I entered a dog+runner 5K last weekend, and me and Jake took 2nd place overall. That was FUN!!!

OM45GE - Posted - 11/07/2018:  03:30:57

Congratulations.

Toby would be too busy sniffing and peeing. We would come in last.

Thanks! We've been training for it, and he's really getting good at it. He understands the difference between a run/race and a pee-mail walk!

OM45GE - Posted - 11/07/2018:  18:23:29

I think it’s great

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/07/2018:  18:27:16

Pee-mail walk? At first glance I thought it was....

OM45GE - Posted - 11/07/2018:  18:29:47

Someone peed on your ham?

DeanT - Posted - 11/08/2018:  06:36:54

OM45GE - Posted - 11/08/2018:  10:07:41

It doesn’t sound very appetizing

DeanT - Posted - 11/08/2018:  16:35:10

Have you ever had Scrapple?

DeanT - Posted - 11/10/2018:  18:11:41

Never even heard of it... googled it... looks like pork Spam

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/10/2018:  18:53:29

nope, never heard of it

OM45GE - Posted - 11/12/2018:  09:35:58

I’ve never seen it outside of Pennsylvania. It’s like a heart attack in a can but it sure is yummy fried up.

DeanT - Posted - 11/12/2018:  16:26:14

I would try it in a heartbeat...

OM45GE - Posted - 11/13/2018:  03:25:24

We have a friend from the Philadelphia area who always brings some when he visits

DeanT - Posted - 11/13/2018:  06:20:07

OM45GE - Posted - 11/13/2018:  11:03:05

Good point

I hate stupid fake whipped cake frosting. Give my the old fashioned thick sugar bomb frosting any day

OM45GE - Posted - 11/20/2018:  14:10:14

I’m right there with you on that

DeanT - Posted - 11/22/2018:  14:28:17

My favorite today was the sweatpotatoe cinnamon casserole

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/22/2018:  14:34:30

mmm.... we had candied yams

OM45GE - Posted - 11/22/2018:  14:38:27

We had dinner at my in-law’s assisted living facility. My brother in-law said prisoners eat better. I didn’t think it was quite that bad, but it wasn’t great

DeanT - Posted - 11/22/2018:  16:28:49

Some of those places are prisons... with a sky high rent

OM45GE - Posted - 11/22/2018:  19:00:24

This one is quite nice, but you’re right about the cost

One of the colleges here in town (College of St. Scholastica) hosts a free feed for folks on Thanksgiving in the local convention center.  Quite a few thousand folks show up each year, and the city buses give free shuttle rides to and from the event.  Turkey/ mashed potato/ stuffing/ gravy/ corn/ cranberry sauce/ cake/ etc./ and our guys from the group home always want to go each year - - so that's where we were today.  I am NOT a fan of being in a crowd that size (or any size) in any way/ shape/ or form/ and having so many folk's "milling around" at something like this makes me want to find the nearest exit.  We got the meals for all of us, and were out of there within an hour or so, so I survived.  Thankfully - - I'll not have to face anything like that until this time next year. smiley

I live in the area of Massachusetts where the gas disaster happened. We got ours back a couple of weeks ago but lots of folks don’t have service yet. The gas company gave out over 20,000 turkey dinners yesterday. They had dining halls set up but most folks took them to go.

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/23/2018:  10:45:09

I guess that’s the least they could do, Bill. Are they still on the hook for this disaster?

OM45GE - Posted - 11/23/2018:  14:15:20

Yes. They’re reimbursing folks in full for expenses, they’ve committed to repaving every street that’s been dug up (they’re patched now), paying for temporary housing, you name it.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/07/2018:  04:54:33

Those two dogs whose owner lets run loose in the early morning have come over to my street now. The first time they were together and ran out of the dark at Toby and me growling. It startled the hell out of me. I had my hiking staff with me and swung it at them yelling like a fool. They backed off and we headed off. I called the police and they said they would let the animal control officer know.

A few days later they came back but they were not close together and weren’t as aggressive. I called the cops again and asked that they send a patrol officer out which they did and talked to the owner. They animal control officer followed up with me too.

I haven’t seen them the past few days. We’ll see how long it lasts.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/07/2018:  11:09:10

some people only think of themselves

OM45GE - Posted - 12/07/2018:  12:24:03

I'll say.

DeanT - Posted - 12/07/2018:  12:55:26

I hope they got a ticket

OM45GE - Posted - 12/08/2018:  05:21:39

I don’t think he did this time but the animal control officer said he would the next time - if there is a next time.

I’m sort of surprised he didn’t get one. The ACO is pretty zealous other times. We have wonderful walking trails through the woods in town and he parks his van where he can see the trail heads and writes up people who have their dogs off leash on the trails.

Maybe it’s because he doesn’t actually see this guy’s dogs off leash because it happens pre-dawn when the ACO isn’t on duty yet.

I hadn’t thought of that.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/08/2018:  11:59:10

greased palms?

DeanT - Posted - 12/08/2018:  15:42:42

double standards?

The police chief in the town I grew up in, was one of my Dad's best friends. He pulled me over when I was under age, and drunk, and had an open container in my car. He said it was my one and only second chance, and lesson that damn well better last a lifetime, and told me to drive safe, and go straight home, and if I was ever caught again, it would be the end of life as I knew it. Scared the s*** out of me, and I've held up my end for life. As far as I know, he never told my Dad.
