'70's era Fords were notorious for rusting out prematurely. I heard they were using badly recycled steel.

The truck I never should have sold, was a 77 Ford. The odometer stopped working somewhere past 200K. Straight 6, three on the tree. I even put zerts on the king-pins and they never wore out. No rust, solid as a rock. Non power brakes, man it was a great workout to drive. I let it go in the late 90's for $500. It would get $5000 easily these days. If I knew then, what I do now, I'd still be driving it. Our winters are really mild, and if they do lay down stuff on the roads, it's just sand.

Newer. Ads are certainly much better from a corrosion perspective.

I could look through the floor and see the road in my old VW... when I lived in Michigan

I had a '70 F100 sport custom, baby blue, 4 speed, 302 windsor great little truck, then a 72 F250 with a 390 and an automatic. I wish I still had the 70 model, not for any collector value, it was just a good truck

I got my "loaner" car today from my friend. A 95 Honda Civic. Cool little car. Um... it doesn't have a muffler... he said it fell off a couple years ago
Runs great!
dat - Posted - 12/29/2015: 15:14:47
glass packs
I used to like them loud, now quiet is good a muffler shouldn't be more than about 50 to 75 bucks
DeanT - Posted - 12/29/2015: 17:14:24
I'll find out tomorrow. I'm having the tires balanced first thing, If it's not too much, I'll get a muffler for it. Least I can do for the use of the car. Cool little car.

Honda makes some incredible motors. From their one lung power products engines to the incredible V-12 F1 screamers in the 1960's.
DeanT - Posted - 12/30/2015: 04:43:29
I'm holding out hope he might give me the car or sell it to me cheap. it's spunkier than my old car... with 100K more miles on it. It's also a stick, and I've always preferred that over automatic
OM45GE - Posted - 12/30/2015: 05:06:16
I prefer manual transmissions too - unless I'm in a traffic jam.

I had a 79 honda civic hatchback, ugliest brown car ever, but it got 35 mpg with me driving the dog out of it, at the same time I had a 78 K5 blazer with 35 inch tires, 350 bored 30 over, 202 heads, good low end cam, it got about 7 mpg no matter how you drove it. I drove the blazer mostly and the car on weekend road trips and loaned it out to friends for trips. I wish I still had that little car
OM45GE - Posted - 12/30/2015: 14:19:47
I had a 1991 Honda CRX Si. Two seater fastback pocket rocket. It would get 35 to 40 mpg with me driving experience it like I stole it and was a blast to drive. Tin worm got it.

I've owned a few furrin cars- Sunbeam, VW, Renault, Datsun, Honda, Dodge Colt (Mitsibushi) ,Mazda, Hyundai, most of'em well used and on their last legs, except the Hyundai I still have.
DeanT - Posted - 12/30/2015: 18:30:13
Good lord... they wanted $325 for a muffler job! A little loud is ok...
chuckv97 - Posted - 12/30/2015: 19:27:42
Nowadays that sounds about right - yeah, kinda steep. Maybe you can find a good cheap one at the local wrecking yard.

Can you get by without driving with a muffler?? Up here you'd get a hefty fine or at least a warning ticket once the police heard you driving. I miss the "old days" of mufflers with clamps and hangers. Now days everything is welded together.
dat - Posted - 12/31/2015: 05:50:29
true cat's cost some dollars, cheap way is probably 5 or 600 , factory probably 1200
DeanT - Posted - 12/31/2015: 06:05:19
It's not any louder than the kids and their lowrider hot rods. I went past a cop running radar yesterday and didn't even get a second look
OM45GE - Posted - 12/31/2015: 06:05:28
I had a BMW M3 that the cat failed on. The part was almost $3,500 through the dealer. I'm friends with the service manager and he advised buying aftermarket from a reputable BMW specialty firm for about $1,200 which he installed. So far, so good until three in a row failed in less than 1,000 miles each. They made good on them but it was a major pain in the ass. Finally they recommended a high performance "racing" converter for $1,900 which solved the problem. I wish I had just ponied up for the factory unit.
OM45GE - Posted - 12/31/2015: 11:57:28
Yeah, that was a big ouch. On the other hand, the car was 12 years old with 160,000 miles on it so it didn't owe me anything.
dat - Posted - 12/31/2015: 13:03:36
like my truck, 12 years old and 230 K if it doesn't start the next time I turn the key, I sure can't complain
DeanT - Posted - 12/31/2015: 15:51:21
My old Ford wagon was 18 years old. It went to the auction lot today. I got $300 for it... blowing antifreeze, grinding, and knocking like it was about to blow a rod. with my insurance and tag refunds, made $522.50 on the day. Now if I can just sweet talk my friends into selling me the old Honda...

Hard to believe that a 16 year old teenager was born after Y2K

I would've celebrated my 40th wedding anniversary 1 week ago (12/27/75). It lasted 10 years, but the next 30 years just flew by and left me wondering where they went.

I used to joke that my ship came in but turned out to be a barge filled with hazardous materials. Then I divorced her.
