The first song I ever played in public was "Can't you See" but no flute part

dmiller - Posted - 09/25/2015:  19:45:09

The first song I ever did on stage was The Ballad of the MTA for a bunch of kids at Camp Thunderbird here in Mn.  Our stage was

a flatbed trailer pulled into place by a tractor.  That was in 71, or 72.  I was nervous as could be, but we got through the "gig" OK.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/25/2015:  19:56:46

First gig I ever had was backing up this aging 50ish gal who had sung in small time country bands for years. She was by then a broken down alcoholic living in a room above the bar. I was 20 ,had a borrowed Epiphone electric and amp. She strummed her acoustic, I faked some licks. Intermission theme song instrumental was Wildwood Flower. Wow- I haven't thought about that in years.(probably blocking it out of my memory. 😏

DeanT - Posted - 09/25/2015:  21:45:08

I don't miss playing in bars. My bar band only lasted 4 years. By then I had had enough.

I never really went to bars even when I was drinking a lot, costs to much

DeanT - Posted - 09/26/2015:  17:03:30

We lived there on dollar pitcher night...

OM45GE - Posted - 09/28/2015:  03:28:58

We used to play at a nice Irish pub, The Cork and Kerry.  It was a good gig. I was sorry when they closed.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/28/2015:  05:44:38

Did your music have anything to do with their closing? (Sorry- couldn't resist. You teed it up Bill. 😁)

dat - Posted - 09/28/2015:  05:50:39

mine sure would

DeanT - Posted - 09/28/2015:  06:13:03

who goes to bars anymore? All the kids stay home and stay connected to the internet

dat - Posted - 09/28/2015:  08:40:46

or sit around a coffee shop and look at their phones

DeanT - Posted - 09/28/2015:  11:04:19

Yep! All the big dance clubs we used to have back in the 80's are all looooong gone. What do kids do now instead of bar hopping?

dat - Posted - 09/28/2015:  11:12:32

Study for class?        OK, OK  I know better

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/28/2015:  13:05:06

I'm glad I was young then and not now....(is that a Yogi-ism?)

dat - Posted - 09/28/2015:  13:57:08

I was lucky enough to live through the first time, I wouldn't want to take a chance and be young a second time

DeanT - Posted - 09/28/2015:  17:44:07

My guardian Angels got paid triple time

dmiller - Posted - 09/28/2015:  20:40:57

Folks laugh at me when (and if it's being talked about)  I tell them I believe in angels.  There was one time in my life that I had an "encounter" that defies explanation and yea - - I think they're real.

DeanT - Posted - 09/28/2015:  21:59:22

If they weren't real, I wouldn't be here

OM45GE - Posted - 09/29/2015:  03:32:09

A local car dealer is having a "Last chance" sale. I can't figure out what the last chance is for. The dealer isn't going out of business, they say the cars are 2016 models so it's not something they're running out of. The ad even says it's a annual last chance sale so they do it every year.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/29/2015:  04:57:04

Must be some kind of subliminal advertising trick. Sorta like pricing things at $99.99 ,,people figure that to be a lot less than $100.

dat - Posted - 09/29/2015:  05:54:47

and down the road it's even cheaper at 99.95, look for the savings while you burn that fuel

DeanT - Posted - 09/29/2015:  06:14:45

Last Chance to get ripped off in the month of September

dat - Posted - 09/29/2015:  10:07:11

I always figured that if I can sell something today for a dollar, I can sell it tomorrow for a dollar, or may be after a week for 50 cents just to get it out of inventory, chances are it only cost me 25 cents to start with

OM45GE - Posted - 09/30/2015:  03:32:09

I watch the news early in the morning and there are always a lot of car dealer ads. I've seen as many as six in a row - all for different dealers and brands.

dat - Posted - 09/30/2015:  05:56:05

car sales are slow everywhere

DeanT - Posted - 09/30/2015:  06:16:59

I can't afford a new car, besides my old car doesn't lie about it's smoky emissions...

dat - Posted - 09/30/2015:  06:20:46

new car prices are way out of range

dmiller - Posted - 09/30/2015:  08:33:13

I was thinking of trading my Subaru sedan in for a Subaru wagon a while back.  The sedan works just fine (10 years old), but the wagon would give me more room inside to "carry junk".  I found an Outback wagon (not new but 2 years old) and even used, it was 25 grand or so.  Then when you add the taxes on top of the purchase price, it gets to be WAY expensive.  Give me a beater that's mechanically sound any day of the week.

dat - Posted - 09/30/2015:  09:45:37

I never had one, but always liked the subaru brat,

how many car companies today would try to put seats in the back of a truck

OM45GE - Posted - 09/30/2015:  17:58:27

That would be about none.

They did that to avoid import taxes from Japan into the U.S.  The import taxes were VERY high for "light trucks" versus cars, so Subaru put the two back seats in the bed of the Brat so they could call it a "passenger car" and pay a helluva lot less in import taxes.  Ronald Reagan had one he used on his ranch in California.

DeanT - Posted - 09/30/2015:  22:02:37

Perfect place to put the brats...

dat - Posted - 10/01/2015:  10:34:17

we always rode in the back of the truck anyway, seats would have been nice

OM45GE - Posted - 10/01/2015:  13:58:56

Six of us drove across country in my 1967 Ford half ton - two in the cab and four in the back which had a cap. It wasn't bad, especially after we fixed the exhaust leak. cool

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/01/2015:  14:34:19

That reminds me of Kerouac's "On The Road" where he gets a ride with a trucker ,riding on an open flat bed trailer with a few other folks.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/01/2015:  17:45:40

Maybe I should have written a book.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/01/2015:  18:19:12

Yep, you live near Kerouac's hometown

DeanT - Posted - 10/01/2015:  22:28:10

People would get thrown around in the bed of my old Ford pick-up... it was a three-on-the-tree

OM45GE - Posted - 10/02/2015:  04:36:18

Yes, Chuck, I used to live in Lowell. Ed McMahon's hometown too.

Mine was three on the tree too but the shifter wore out and I out a floor shifter in.

DeanT - Posted - 10/02/2015:  06:20:13

I think my left leg muscles were larger because the old manual clutch

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/02/2015:  06:49:00

My left leg used to start shaking after two hours stuck in stop and go traffic. I've been in an automatic shift now for a few years- much easier.

dat - Posted - 10/02/2015:  06:59:19

my first truck, a 1970 ford F100 sport custom, had a clutch pedal that would sure build the muscles

DeanT - Posted - 10/02/2015:  13:29:42

Mine even had manual steering... driving it was better than going to the gym

dat - Posted - 10/02/2015:  14:20:54

No power brakes either, you got a workout with both legs and arms, then you are slowing down, working the clutch and brakes and it's nighttime, you have your bright lights on and someone is coming in the other lane, then as you down shift, you have to move your left foot quick to the dimmer switch up close to the firewall

Yeah, and no GPS! How did we ever survive!

OM45GE - Posted - 10/02/2015:  18:51:43

We blew the differential in Nebraska and changed it in a truck stop parking lot. The manager gave us a ride to a junkyard. The only diff they had that would fit was super tall. You had to slip the clutch like crazy to get going but it was turning about 1,200 rpm at sixty five mph.

DeanT - Posted - 10/03/2015:  07:05:24

I really miss the days we worked on our own stuff. A buddy, a junkyard and an afternoon, and there was nothing we couldn't fix. One guy would bench press the tranny into place, and the other would put a couple bolts in place...

I don't touch the new stuff, wouldn't have a clue...

OM45GE - Posted - 10/03/2015:  07:50:56

Sad but true Dean. I've done everything from rebuilds on a Jaguar XKE engine to brake jobs. Now, everything but putting air in the tires or filling the windshield washer bottle ends up at the dealer. Sad.

On the other hand, cars are a lot more reliable than when I was growing up.

DeanT - Posted - 10/03/2015:  08:45:07

very true! No more changing points plugs and condenser every year, a carb kit every 2 years, and brakes/valve job/bearing repack every 3 years... etc... today it's just oil change and tire air... and Midas does that cheaper than I can, and a hell of a lot faster.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/03/2015:  13:08:21

I can't remember the last time I even had a light bulb burn out. They're all LED's except the headlights on my new car. I used to carry a supply of single and double filament bulbs in my travel toolbox.
