Cool, I can hear the Joplin influence for sure. I LOVED Janice. Think she would make it in the business today?

dat - Posted - 05/08/2012:  13:34:08

do you think Earnest Tubb would?   a lot of the older singers would have a hard time making it today, but it has always been being at the right place at the right time, some of the singers now wouldn't have made it back in "the day"

OM45GE - Posted - 05/08/2012:  13:40:19

I know what you mean. I was talking about how driven the industry seems to be by physical appearance. Janice doesn't fit the Rock Diva image.

DeanT - Posted - 05/08/2012:  18:52:11

I'm always astonished at the incredible talent just in our city. Many just as good as the performers at the top. Our lead singer can sing a Hank Sr. tribute that can conjure up ghosts... but has no desire to play outside of the local clubs. His family and two little boys are more important. He make glasses for Lenscrafters, and will probably retire doing that. If I could sing like him, I'd be entering all the TV singing shows.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/09/2012:  03:08:11

I completely agree Dean. The success pyramid in music is soooo steep and pointed. It filters out a lot of talented people who don't want to make the sacrifices required.

In one of the rock bands I played in back in the 60's, the drummer was simply mind-boggling. He was incredibly talented as a drummer and a real showman as well. Our organ player's dad had played with Buddy Rich's band and swore that Wayne (the drummer) was much better than Buddy. Wayne got married, had a couple of kids and wasn't willing to travel or gig any more. He hasn't picked up a drumstick in years.

DeanT - Posted - 05/09/2012:  07:00:14

I had a Buddy Rich album in High School... I would have LOVED to play drums... but that wasn't gonna happen in my family. For us it was piano or nothing. Guitars and drums were "of the devil"

dat - Posted - 05/09/2012:  07:08:05

my brother played the drums for a while, I tried the trumpet back many years ago, didn't work out to purty good, but then again my banjo pickin ain't much better but I have more fun trying

I love the looks when you show up at a church with a banjo..

dat - Posted - 05/09/2012:  10:37:12

should be lots of smiles

OM45GE - Posted - 05/09/2012:  10:50:34

I used to run a youth folk group for teenagers at a Catholic church (not my faith) back in the 70's. We played at at least one Mass every Sunday and were asked to do more than a few funerals and weddings. I played banjo on a number of the songs and hymns we did. It was surprisingly well received.

dat - Posted - 05/09/2012:  12:57:04

Amazing grace sounds good played on most anything, even a bagpipe

DeanT - Posted - 05/09/2012:  15:48:40

I don’t even bring my guitar anymore. I play everything on my banjo now.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/09/2012:  17:23:03

I like to mix it up. There's a lot I do fingerstyle on the guitar that I can't do on banjo.

DeanT - Posted - 05/09/2012:  17:32:12

I play with guitar players that are way better than me... so I let them have at it!

OM45GE - Posted - 05/10/2012:  02:48:34

That's one of the wonderful things about music, you can do whatever makes you happy with it.

DeanT - Posted - 05/10/2012:  07:12:31

Unless you are on the Scruggs forum :)

This month, we are playing Blueberry Hill... fun on the banjo!

dat - Posted - 05/10/2012:  07:19:33

probably not often that is played with a banjer

DeanT - Posted - 05/10/2012:  07:29:25

We like to say that we play songs that everyone remembers, but no one plays anymore. It gets us lots of work. Other’s this month include Chatanooga Choo Choo and In the Mood, and even Heartbreak Hotel.

how 'bout    "Don't mess with my Toot Toot"  by Rockin Sidney

OM45GE - Posted - 05/10/2012:  16:30:09

Rockin Sidney?

DeanT - Posted - 05/10/2012:  18:48:21

Just when I thought there were no more songs left to remember... that song hasn’t occupied a brain cell for many many years!

OM45GE - Posted - 05/11/2012:  03:18:18

I'm embarrassed to say I had never heard of him. Took a listen and liked what I heard.

dat - Posted - 05/11/2012:  05:53:17

Boozoo is great. I actually saw him in New Orleans in the 80's.

dat - Posted - 05/11/2012:  07:18:27

we used to go to lake Livingston with my inlaws, they had a "camping resort" spot they were members of that would have a band on saturday nights sometimes.   every once in a while there would be a coonass band that was pretty good, I always enjoyed going when they were there

OM45GE - Posted - 05/11/2012:  07:46:29

Isn't Lake Livingston new Houston I think I remember seeing signs for it when I was driving a truck from Dallas to Houston.

dat - Posted - 05/11/2012:  07:52:17

it's north of Houston but not far, it's about an hour or so drive south of us

OM45GE - Posted - 05/11/2012:  07:54:47

I bought a beaver cowboy hat in Brady Texas back then. Is it around there?

dat - Posted - 05/11/2012:  08:09:32

Brady is farther west, probably about 5 or 6 hours drive. great dove hunting around Brady,

OM45GE - Posted - 05/11/2012:  08:50:43

I was just looking at the hat - it was Marshall Texas - Doug's Western Wear. I went to a great Mexican restaurant in Brady. That was on a run from Dallas to San Antonio.

dat - Posted - 05/11/2012:  09:18:19

we haven't spent much time in Marshall, there is a big pottery place there, but we usually just drive through to somewhere else.

how long were you on the road driving?

OM45GE - Posted - 05/11/2012:  09:27:51

I drove for about ten years and then went into the office. I did a couple local and then over-the-road the rest. I ended up running a couple of different trucking companies at different times.

I like being on my own without a boss looking over my shoulder, but it was a tough way to make a living. It's worse today.

dat - Posted - 05/11/2012:  09:55:31

I know a few drivers that are having a pretty rough time of it and some that have quit driving and gone to other jobs

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/11/2012:  14:35:09

My uncle is a trucker and I have no idea how he's managing. He's pretty close to retirement age, though, so he might just decide it's been a good run but enough's enough.

dat - Posted - 05/11/2012:  14:39:56

hey there, how did the training with the cute feller you hollered at go?

DeanT - Posted - 05/11/2012:  18:02:49

Didn’t you got out on a date after the training was over?

OM45GE - Posted - 05/11/2012:  19:08:05

Who was training whom?

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/11/2012:  20:05:04

One of my coworkers thought he was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I wasn't so impressed. For one, he couldn't handle calling me Niffer so he called me Jenn the whole time.

I mean, I'd rather you call me Jenn than Jenny but truthfully neither of them are my name. Is Jennifer really that hard to say?

We had a conference call with a guy he works with about something training dude didn't know how to do. The guy he works with seemed pretty cool. I want to know if he's married.

DeanT - Posted - 05/11/2012:  20:27:48

The plot thickens...

OM45GE - Posted - 05/12/2012:  04:11:42

Let's practice - all together now, "Jennifer", "Jennifer", "Jennifer", "Jennifer", "Jennifer". There, that wasn't so hard, was it?

DeanT - Posted - 05/12/2012:  08:22:34

That’s what training guy’s cute friend will be saying...

OM45GE - Posted - 05/12/2012:  17:06:07

I didn't mean it that way!

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/12/2012:  17:33:47

big

OM45GE - Posted - 05/12/2012:  18:16:41

I usually say things like that on purpose. My mind must be gone!

DeanT - Posted - 05/12/2012:  19:56:39

That smily face says more than words ever could

OM45GE - Posted - 05/13/2012:  03:49:14

That's for sure.

DeanT - Posted - 05/13/2012:  08:39:54

I’m just wondering if they went out again this weekend

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/13/2012:  13:43:04

Yeah, sure, because it's so easy for someone in DC to date someone in Portland.....

DeanT - Posted - 05/13/2012:  17:29:09

Hey, my wife flew up from Orlando to Kansas for our first date.

OM45GE - Posted - 05/14/2012:  02:36:27
