I hope Mr. Q. feels better soon.

That means you were in Hoosierland when the big snowstorm went through?

dat - Posted - 01/03/2013:  07:56:08

I'm ready for spring

It was mostly south of me.  My friend, Joel, was supposed to meet me in Plymouth, IN, (about half an hour south of South Bend) for lunch and so I could give him some things I wanted to donate to my old college.  He called me and said, "Yeah, I don't think we're going to be able to meet in Plymouth.  The roads are closed south of you."  So he drove to South Bend and we had lunch and I gave him my stuff and he stayed in a hotel that night.  The next day he drove the rest of the way.

They even closed at least one mall in Indy because of the snow--which is a big deal the day after Christmas!

Right now she's giving us a heat wave - we're up to 15 F!

DeanT - Posted - 01/03/2013:  10:22:04

Wind chill in Kansas tonight is supposed to be -8. We have friends in Indiana who got lots of snow

dat - Posted - 01/03/2013:  10:22:16

it's 72 here in the shop, 48 outside

OM45GE - Posted - 01/03/2013:  10:34:43

I would be out on the motorcycle if it was that warm here.

dat - Posted - 01/03/2013:  12:53:07

We've opened up the doors now 68* all the way around, good day to be on the river

OM45GE - Posted - 01/03/2013:  13:14:55

I'll say. Our river is starting to ice up. You know it's cold when the moving water freezes.

dat - Posted - 01/03/2013:  13:59:59

When the rivers and lakes up there start freezing up, it'll push the birds down this way and the duck hunting starts to get better

OM45GE - Posted - 01/03/2013:  14:13:30

I'll definitely send them your way. We can't hunt in town here and their crap is really messing up the playing fields.

Toby won't be happy though!

DeanT - Posted - 01/03/2013:  14:23:47

Who wants me to send them about a million Canadian Gooses?

Hankon5 - Posted - 01/03/2013:  14:33:11

Yep --we have 72 squadrons of Canadians ready to go ..with 100 more in reserve!!!! They were all recently loaded!!! Saskatchewan is targerted first!

OM45GE - Posted - 01/03/2013:  14:38:21

Just keep them out of the Bay State!

dat - Posted - 01/03/2013:  15:21:23

send them all down, there is plenty of rice in the fields left by the combines and plenty of lead, err.....um...........Steal shot to go around

DeanT - Posted - 01/03/2013:  16:32:41

Just got in from running the dogs on the golf course, Hank aint kidding... there's more than you could count... hundreds of them s***ting everywhere

OM45GE - Posted - 01/03/2013:  16:43:38

One of my past employers had a freshwater pond that they used to feed some heat exchangers. The geese were making such a mess that they bought a Chesapeake Bay Retriever (Baxter) to chase them away. One of the engineers took him home at night. The company paid for his training, food and vet bills. We used to throw balls to him at lunch time.

DeanT - Posted - 01/03/2013:  16:53:41

They used a gas powered blower to blow the goose poo off the greens

OM45GE - Posted - 01/03/2013:  16:56:55

That sounds like a fun job. disapprove

FRAILER57 - Posted - 01/03/2013:  21:55:34

They say a canadian goose can unload about 4 lbs ofpoo aday and i believe it. Afew years ago, a couple of foxes went on a rampage in the bottom behind my place and the durned birdslanded in my front yard, hiding while i was working. When i got home, it looked like my yard had been plugged, only the were green/white t**ds instead of dirt .

DeanT - Posted - 01/04/2013:  00:16:40

I don't know how them big fat birds even get off the ground...

OM45GE - Posted - 01/04/2013:  01:34:22

They make quite a noise when a big gaggle of them takes off all at once.

dat - Posted - 01/04/2013:  05:54:28

to me that is a good sound, but then again we don't get near that many down here

and here are the snows

DeanT - Posted - 01/04/2013:  07:16:49

That's exactly what we hear, when me and three greyhounds quietly approach several hundred sleeping geese along the third fairway... and I say ok, on the count of three...

OM45GE - Posted - 01/04/2013:  07:20:10

I played the Canada Geese video and Toby came running into the room all excited. He had been sound asleep in the other room. It was really funny.

The middle and high school complex we live near has four different playing field areas. Toby will chase them off one and they'll fly a couple hundred yards and land in another. We'll go chase them off there and the same thing will happen. The geese get sick of it after a few times and head for the swamps. He must have thought the geese were in my office.

I think that's part of why they poop so much.  They're already so big that any additional weight would make it impossible for them to fly, so they eat and poop and eat and poop.

The poop is supposed to be good fertilizer.

There's a local service "Geese Police" that has a border collie.  They go around and chase the geese away from ponds.  And one of the local cities purchased a border collie (he lived with one of the city officials) to chase the geese away from the waterfront.

DeanT - Posted - 01/04/2013:  12:35:23

They were cool 30 years ago, when you saw three or four of them every once in a while. Sort of like seeing a fox, or a deer. Now it's like they are taking over in an Alfred Hitchcock movie...

Alaina - Posted - 01/04/2013:  16:18:51

Well I was planning on being back on the second, but apparently my body wanted to get a nasty cold out of the way first thing this year, so I was in bed the past four days sad Thankfully sleep and cold meds are a wonderful combination and I just got through my first day of work this year, go me!

I missed you guys!!!

We had a great day skiing yesterday at Pat's Peak up in New Hampshire. It's about 60 miles north of us and they had a ton of snow, both natural and man made. We're going back next Friday too. Yeehaw!

dat - Posted - 01/05/2013:  07:03:20

I never have snow skied, but we used to go kayaking and swimming here .    (this is just off of youtube, I don't have any videos of me almost drowning)

OM45GE - Posted - 01/05/2013:  07:09:34

I can see why they call it the Washing Machine. We have some great white water around here. I've rafted it but my worn old shoulders can't do the kayaking. I stick to flat water in the boats.

dat - Posted - 01/05/2013:  07:30:02

I was told that Cossatot was the indian name for the river and it means skull crusher.  Cossatot Falls is a bunch of back to back falls that drops around 40 feet in 1/8 of a mile .

I don't kayak anymore, it hurts more now than it did when I was in my 30's

DeanT - Posted - 01/05/2013:  08:47:41

I've never snow skied or kaiaked, or I'd be cassatot for sure

It's funny how well we got along without cell phones and the internet.  Now I feel lost if I forget my phone or the internet goes down.
