The old Love Canal site in Niagara Falls had orange slime bubbling up into people's basements

in 10 million years people will be excavating the sites wondering what kind of creatures we were

dat - Posted - 11/14/2015:  06:50:42

be then they'll be drilling down to our dump sites for oil type rotted fermented substance for fuel to burn by then, one more step to being fossil fuel free

One thing nice about living way-the-hay-up-north here is -- - no cockroaches.  I think the cold disagrees with them.

Sounds like the makings of a Gospel song there!  youtu.be/fzL7buTLMTQ

A gospel song about cockroaches?

DeanT - Posted - 11/16/2015:  05:55:12

I wouldn't have minded if Noah would have left the cockroaches behind

dat - Posted - 11/16/2015:  09:14:58

we have the big wood roaches around, when I go down to the barn at night I'll see them when I turn on the barn light, then they scatter quick.

they crunch pretty good if you step on them

DeanT - Posted - 11/16/2015:  11:05:22

those used to infiltrate our shop... big suckers. We would burn them if we caught them

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/16/2015:  13:19:01

I've never seen those....do they taste good burnt?

DeanT - Posted - 11/16/2015:  13:51:37

Don't they call the big ones Palmetto bugs in Texas?

OM45GE - Posted - 11/17/2015:  09:01:33

They call them that in Florida.

dat - Posted - 11/17/2015:  09:15:40

I haven't ever heard them called that, but there is a lot I haven't heard, even here in Texas

DeanT - Posted - 11/17/2015:  10:36:00

I did some time at Kelly AFB, and that's what they called them there

I just got out of the hospital this morning.  An overnight "sleep test" for sleep apnea.  It was no fun, and with all the electrodes and wires they had pasted on my head/ neck/ legs etc. I didn't sleep too good.  The guy running the test told me this morning that yup - - I stop breathing during sleep.  My ex told me that 30 years ago so knew that already. Now I'm waiting for "official results" in another week or two, and any suggestions they may have for me to pursue for a "cure".

On the upside  - - The technician doing the test turns out to be a banjo picker too,  so before you knew it - - - the sleep apnea test got put on the back burner while we talked brands of banjos/ flanges/ banjos current and pre-war/ and music in general for damn near another hour.  He reads stuff here on the BHO, but isn't a member.  He told me (proudly) that he had upgraded to a Gold Tone from whatever bottle-cap it was that he had originally - - and he was devastated to hear (when he asked) about Gibson banjos no longer being made.  Now he's on a mission to find a Gibson MasterTone since he's now convinced that they are "extinct".  I tried to tell him that there were a lot of good ones for sale, but I'm not really sure he believed me!

I have his phone number and he has mine.  I hope to meet up with him again, but not there in the hospital for another one of those damn apnea tests.  I've still got some of the sticky  "gunk" in my hair that they used to stick the electrodes to.  Maybe one more shower will do the trick.

I was gonna say that it was a lot cheaper for your wife to tell you than the lab tech, but being married for more than 30 years, I'm not so sure about that

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/17/2015:  12:30:13

I only stop breathing if I sleep on my back. The throat relaxes and closes up , so I just sleep mostly on my sides. David, were you feeling the effects of being sleep- deprived?

dat - Posted - 11/17/2015:  12:34:11

what made you go in to check?

my bride says that she thinks I stop breathing sometimes, but I think that is her wishful thinking, may be she is dreaming that she has a pillow over my head

OM45GE - Posted - 11/17/2015:  15:06:05

I found out I had sleep apnea about 10 years ago after my wife complained. I've been using a CPAP machine ever since. What a huge difference it makes. I'm not tired during the day any more, my memory is much better, nor more colds and sore throats.  The sleep study sucked but I'm glad I did it.

Banjo Lessons for free medical work....

dmiller - Posted - 11/17/2015:  21:31:44

Great idea Dean!  I don't think it'll work - - but it's worth a try!

Chuck - - I've heard that about sleeping on your back. As much as I've tried, I can't sleep on my side.  Maybe briefly during the night, but that's it.  And I never thought of it as sleep deprivation, but I'm always tired all day long.  I always thought that was normal - - until recently.

dat - - My ex told me way back when that I stopped breathing during the night, and I figured it was no real big deal.  What caused me to go for the checkup was my brother.  He lives down in your part of the country (Buda / Austin Tx) and he's a captain for Delta Airlines.  They get checked out physically on a rigorous schedule to stayed qualified to fly, and recently some irregularities showed up with his heart.  He was immediately grounded until they could see what was going on.

At first, they thought he might need a pacemaker, but then he took the apnea test and they figured out that that's what was causing the irregularities.  He's on a CPAP machine at night now, and is cleared to fly again.  After hearing all that from him (and me just finally getting tired of "being tired all the time") is what got me in there.

A lot of truckers were made to get the CPAP machine- they didn't want overly tired truck drivers out on the roads.

OM45GE - Posted - 11/18/2015:  03:18:41

Nothing like 80,000 lbs of big rig and a sleeping driver.

Did you ever do teams Chuck?  I was never able to sleep with someone else driving.

dat - Posted - 11/18/2015:  06:27:39

I can't sleep with someone else driving either, even knowing they drive well, it's just not easy to go to sleep, when we drive places I save my sleeping for my section of drivingyes

actually my bride drives and I talk to keep her away, then I drive and she sleeps, we swap out driving but I don't sleep

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/18/2015:  07:55:02

I never did team driving,Bill, but did go out with a mentor for a week when I first started. I think I got about 10 hours total sleep all week. Some married couples drive team with our company, but I always figured it's a recipe for divorce (or murder,,,lol)

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/18/2015:  21:03:36

I like Jerry Reed, but I think those movies set the truckers' image back 30 years. O well, that's Wollyhood for ya....

So here's an ironic story. We had a tree service come yesterday to take down a sickly tree near the wires in front of the house and trim dead limbs off others so we wouldn't have to worry about them taking out the power and phones this winter. The tree service truck caught the fiber optic cable coming into the house so I didn't have internet, phone or TV for a day and a half.

DeanT - Posted - 11/19/2015:  15:43:02

I'm sure the tree service will be glad to pay you for the time you missed on your services. dead

yep, hold a hot dog up to the window frame and it'll cook from radio waves, we'll have to go to lead and asbestos lining in the walls
