I found an old schlitz can in our attic

OM45GE - Posted - 07/06/2016:  10:55:22

I found some mouse turds.

dat - Posted - 07/06/2016:  15:22:44

yeah, plenty of those too, seems like it would be to hot up there, but I believe they like it

DeanT - Posted - 07/06/2016:  15:34:41

There is still a boarded up crawl space under one of our bedrooms, that I've never explored. Maybe that's where the loot is?

chuckv97 - Posted - 07/06/2016:  19:12:43

Hmm....or skeletons...

DeanT - Posted - 07/06/2016:  19:20:55

been wondering about those creepy noises in the middle of the night from under there...

OM45GE - Posted - 07/07/2016:  05:39:05

Our last house had a finished attic. I realized that there was a lot of space between the walls and the roof. I found an access panel and there was a lot of room back there. I found an antique bed, some old boards and an old roll up fire escape ladder (this was the third floor).  There wasn't room to get anything out without tearing down a wall so I left them there.

DeanT - Posted - 07/07/2016:  06:27:56

There's an electric generator motor in my attic that I can't even lift. How it got up there or why I'll never know. It's up there forever

OM45GE - Posted - 07/07/2016:  07:14:09

Somebody thought it was a good idea.

DeanT - Posted - 07/07/2016:  10:25:39

It's above the garage, so if the attic floor gives out, it will land on my car

OM45GE - Posted - 07/07/2016:  11:30:55

Try explaining that to the insurance company.

chuckv97 - Posted - 07/07/2016:  12:38:01

They might give you a check for $100 and raise your rates $500

dmiller - Posted - 07/07/2016:  14:00:39

I've been in the same house here for 36 years.  A year or so after I bought it in 1980, I went into the attic to put extra insulation up there and found a complete hardwood floor over the joists.  There was also a full sized wooden door (3 1/2'x7') up there.  The trapdoor leading into the attic is accessible only by ladder, and it's only 2 feet square.  There is no way that door (the big one) could've gotten up there through the trapdoor, but that's the only entrance/exit up there and there that door was.  I gave up trying to figure it out and yes it's still there.

chuckv97 - Posted - 07/07/2016:  15:11:16

Rod Serling time....tick, tick,tick......

DeanT - Posted - 07/07/2016:  15:24:49

Half of my attic is hardwood floors too! Maybe that's what they did back then so they could throw junk up there.

OM45GE - Posted - 07/08/2016:  06:04:43

There were unfinished hardwood floors in the crawl space in my old house. It probably wasn't that expensive back then.

DeanT - Posted - 07/08/2016:  06:14:01

we were going to get new carpet, so we pulled up all the old carpet in our house. Beautiful hardwood floors! We never got new carpet, love the old floors!

OM45GE - Posted - 07/08/2016:  11:54:46

We did the same thing here. wall to wall in two bedrooms, dining room and hallway, all over beautiful oak and walnut floors. We had them sanded and refinished.  In the kitchen there was cheap laminate flooring in poor condition. We got new appliance and when we pulled out the stove found beautiful ceramic tile laid in a pattern with oak strips. We tore out all the laminate, scraped the glue off the tile and refinished the wood. It looks incredible.

DeanT - Posted - 07/09/2016:  02:22:58

never can figure out why folks cover up such nice floors. And hardwood floors are a snap to sweep and vaccume. With no stains and stinky smells, especially with dogs.

OM45GE - Posted - 07/09/2016:  12:18:49

Exactly. My brother says he doesn't like hardwood because it gets dusty. He doesn't believe me when I tell him the carpet gets dusty too but it doesn't show it so his house is actually pretty dirty.

DeanT - Posted - 07/09/2016:  17:40:59

After seeing the nasty funk under my carpet when we pulled it up, I may never have carpet ever again in my life

dmiller - Posted - 07/09/2016:  19:38:11

Up in my attic (along with that door) were 3 or 4 kind of worn out 9 x 12 rugs (floral type design on them) that former owners had in the living room, and then when they got "too used" looking - - up to the attic they went and a new one was bought for the living room.  When I got this place - - it had been a rental for several years and the rug in the living room was an ugly/ decrepit/  cigarette-beer stained/ foul-smelling thing that we immediately threw out.  Went to the local rental place for a floor sander and it took a couple days of work (I'd never used one before), but we got it looking good, and then put some sort of finish on it to seal it.  Still looking good these many years later.

OM45GE - Posted - 07/10/2016:  03:49:07

You're a better man than I. I worked hard to stay out of the way while a pro did the refinishing. 😎

Dean, it was the same for us. My son an I pulled up the old wall to wall and it was nasty! Then we spent a couple of days pulling up about a million staples they had used to tack down the padding.

DeanT - Posted - 07/10/2016:  06:13:03

Same here!!! We pulled the carpet up in 2009, and we are STILL finding staples we missed.

OM45GE - Posted - 07/10/2016:  14:55:38

We found a small pair of vice grips worked pretty well. We just sat on the floor and talked while we pulled away. It was pretty nice bonding time with my son.  He was about nine at the time.

DeanT - Posted - 07/10/2016:  16:46:16

ours didn't come up very easy, vice grips, crow bars, screwdrivers, etc. We also had tack strips to pull up, and they were nailed down.

dmiller - Posted - 07/11/2016:  00:25:14

We had an air show here in town this week-end.  The USAF Thunderbird team was in town to do their thing for the locals on Saturday and Sunday.  It wasn't going to be possible to get any of our clients from the group home there for the show (logistics of pushing wheelchairs through crowds/ etc.), but one of "my guys" wanted to go for a drive on Friday (instead of going right on home) when I picked him up from his day-job/ workplace for folks with disabilities.  So I drove up past the house I work at (where he lives) to the airport to maybe see a few of the planes in town this week-end for the air show.  We were there for about 10 minutes, and then I heard the sound of jet engines firing up.

We found a place to park by the runway, with a 360° view of the sky, and were able to watch the Thunderbirds practice their entire routine.  What a treat!  I think you have to have nerves of steel to fly in a group like that so close together/ at such high speeds/ and with such precision and maximum concentration every second.

Yeah, the tack strips were a bear. I had forgotten about them. I must have blocked out the painful memory.

Sounds like a great ahow dmiller.

chuckv97 - Posted - 07/11/2016:  09:47:49

I stopped at Nellis AFB a couple of years ago to watch the military jets take off and land. I get a charge out of hearing the engines and the speed.

dat - Posted - 07/11/2016:  10:48:09

I never was around flying much, but several years back I went up in a powered parachute, it was amazing up there

dmiller - Posted - 07/11/2016:  11:05:41

Back when we were kids in the early 1960's, Dad would take us to the county fair and there was a guy there with an airplane giving rides for "a penny a pound".  If you weighed 100 lbs - - you paid one buck for a 10 minute ride over town.  Dad never did weigh more than 180 or so in his entire life - - so he got the plane ride for less than 2 bucks, and he loved it up there.  Fond memories of days gone by.

DeanT - Posted - 07/11/2016:  15:05:21

I worked on airplanes my whole career. I HATE flying. I listen to every little thing and expect something to screw up anytime. Being up there at the mercy of the machine scares the crap out of me.

chuckv97 - Posted - 07/11/2016:  15:23:33

My Dad never liked going to watch the planes at the local airport - it reminded him of the war when the Nazis bombers would come over back in Holland.

DeanT - Posted - 07/11/2016:  15:54:07

My Dad grew up in Friesland, and said the bombers and fighters flew over a lot. He saw dogfights, and knew of locals who hid pilots after parachuting down.

chuckv97 - Posted - 07/11/2016:  18:44:44

My sister-in-law's dad worked in the resistance helping pilots who were shot down or others who escaped from pow camps.
My Dad hid a cache of rifles under the floorboards of the dining room for a few weeks.

A friend of mine (purple heart Vietnam vet) makes it a point each year to leave town, and go wayyyy out into the country where there is no one around on the 4th of July.  The fireworks (both public and private) give him ugly flashbacks to his time in Nam.

DeanT - Posted - 07/12/2016:  04:51:18

During the July 4th holiday, as I was jogging around town, I noticed that the people that were the least well off, spent the most on fireworks.

watch the money burn, it goes quick enough already

I'm always amazed at the big screen TV's in the front windows, and new cars parked in the low income neighborhods.

chuckv97 - Posted - 07/12/2016:  10:45:09

I guess people who are poor want those things to feel better about themselves; or it's an indication of why they are poor - making bad choices and wanting instant gratification. Not being judgemental, just an observation.

I like nice things but I don't buy anything I can't pay cash for (except the house) and I keep things for as long as possible.

DeanT - Posted - 07/13/2016:  04:49:23

Me too! Cash only on everything.

dat - Posted - 07/13/2016:  07:38:30

I do finance some things, but usually just go without

dmiller - Posted - 07/13/2016:  07:46:58

I'll use a credit card for gasoline and such at Sam's club - - but I make sure to pay off the entire bill at the end of each month.  There once was a time in my life when I lived off a credit card and once I got out of debt from that, I promised myself it would never happen again.

DeanT - Posted - 07/13/2016:  10:11:55

I got out of credit debt in 2000 when my 3rd x left. I paid my house off in 2007. It's been cash only ever since. I do use a credit card for gas/internet purchases, but always pay it off immediately.
