They mostly just terrified us that a mushroom cloud was going to appear over  us but somehow we would survive because we had sheltered underneath our wooden desks.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/27/2016:  15:16:45

I remember people building underground fallout shelters and the installation of big siren towers that they would test a couple of times a year.

yep.  before my time, but could be after too

our old house had a bomb shelter in the basement

We were in a nuclear first strike zone because of a nearby Air Force base and a Navy yard where they worked on nuclear submarines.

as a kid, I remember my mother being worried about it, but we didn't have a cellar or shelter

OM45GE - Posted - 09/28/2016:  06:27:10

If you're curious about the time, Google "Cuban missile crisis. The Russians had put nuclear missiles on Cuba, 90 miles from the US. We blockaded the island and for a while it looked like we might go to war. For an impressionable kid, it was very frightening.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/28/2016:  09:17:37

The first time I saw satellite images of the missile towers in Cuba I was amazed . After that, as a kid, I thought everybody could be watched - kind of felt creepy.

dat - Posted - 09/28/2016:  10:23:08

everybody can pretty much be watched, still creepy

OM45GE - Posted - 09/28/2016:  11:13:11

I'm amazed when I see all the security camera footage that surfaces when there is an accident or a crime. A friend of mine's son was killed in a motorcycle crash this year when a vehicle turned in front of him. There was an eye witness who was driving behind the guy who turned and she swore it was a white SUV. There were three surveillance cameras that showed it was a white pickup truck. Two showed the accident and the third was down the street before the crash and showed the plate number. This was in a small town in Maine.

ever seen Person of Interest?      I know it's pretty far fetched, but may be not as much as we like to think

OM45GE - Posted - 09/28/2016:  12:58:14

I haven't see it but will try to find it.

DeanT - Posted - 09/28/2016:  16:09:55

I'm just blown away at google earth. If you are outside, you are on candid camera.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/28/2016:  18:00:15

That is an amazing program.  The detail you can see is incredible.

DeanT - Posted - 09/28/2016:  18:14:47

You can see my bird bath, my dog poo can, and golfers on the golf course by my house.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/28/2016:  18:21:32

It's too bad it isn't live and real time.

dmiller - Posted - 09/28/2016:  18:54:09

I "Google earthed" my house a while back and looking at the street view, there was my parent's car parked in front of the house.  They were on vacation/ visiting here in town/ and got "caught on film" by Google Earth. Dad passed away 5 years ago, and they haven't been here for at least 10 years before that.  Maybe Google doesn't update the photos real often?  Still - - its unreal how accurate their photos are.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/28/2016:  18:58:28

They stopped putting cams inside our truck cabs - too many guys quit . They are installing new ones that don't have the inside the cab lens, just the one pointing outside. I guess I can put a strip of tape back on mine.

dmiller - Posted - 09/28/2016:  19:01:47

I wouldn't like an "inside the cab cam" at all.  Too intrusive.  Dash cam pointing outside is different.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/28/2016:  19:02:48

Google says they try to update areas every three years.

dat - Posted - 09/29/2016:  05:50:58

ours is several years old, we don't have a street view at our place yet, but the overhead view gets close

OM45GE - Posted - 09/29/2016:  06:33:30

We have street view. It's at least three years old because we've painted the house.  Google earth is newer because the house is painted. Judging from some nearby road work, it's about a year old.

dat - Posted - 09/29/2016:  07:50:42

some of the weather maps actually have a newer view of our house

There's a funny story about Fiat getting the Google Street camera schedule and putting a Fiat in front of Volkswagen's headquarters.

I'd also heard that another car company tried to do something similar and got bagged. Supposedly their was towed away.

Did you see the one where the Google street view camera car supposedly caught some guy with a giant pee stain on his paints?

it all drained into his combat boots...

That was supposed to be "pants" not " paints".

the street view between our house and town is much older, and larger

I think there's more fabric in my guitar rag than the three of them are wearing all together.

DeanT - Posted - 09/30/2016:  15:59:34

I bet the guitar rag was cheaper too

OM45GE - Posted - 09/30/2016:  17:20:01

Probably, it's an old cloth diaper.

cloth diapers are great for polishing

could be the end of the road for me here for a while, looking at a career change that may or may not work out, but I think I would enjoy it much more than being a public people person.    we'll see how it goes though, handy man, home repairs etc, I know different folks that have rent houses they pay to have repaired.  between the three people and about 40 houses and 25 trailer houses, I may get a start.    47 years old and looking at doing something to start new.    my bride says I'm easier to get along with now just thinking about it even though I haven't jumped out and quit my day job yet.     I guess I'm burnt out with dealing with the public

DeanT - Posted - 10/01/2016:  12:47:32

Good luck man! Would you be forfeiting any retirement? That would be my biggest concern... and where some of my friends have big (even HUGE) regrets.  At about 14 years time, I wanted to get out of the military really really really bad... but took the advise of everyone (without exception) who had gutted it out. I stuck it out and now I'm glad I did.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/01/2016:  13:17:31

Good luck for sure. My best friend (and musical partner) is a builder too. He's cut back on taking big jobs and has started doing smaller repairs that the big contractors don't want. It's working out pretty well for him. There are a lot of vacation homes where he lives with owners who live elsewhere and need someone to look after them.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/01/2016:  15:23:21

Good luck, Daniel. Don't blame you for wanting to get away from dealing with the public. I started a new career at 53 and don't regret it at all.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/01/2016:  16:21:25

Life is way too short to spend it doing something you don't enjoy.

I loved my career when I was a peon workerbee. Then I became a boss with a crew. It went from love to hate. I'd rather just do the stuff myself rather than tell someone else to do it, and then be responsible for their work.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/01/2016:  16:54:14

I'm the same. I've run companies and managed large and small groups. Now I am a direct contributor with no management responsibility and I'm so much happier.

DeanT - Posted - 10/02/2016:  18:28:25

It really sucked, because I'm a worker, not a paper pusher or boss. I somehow sucked it up, and made it too retirement. I had enemies, elected no retirement ceremony, and snuck out the back door early, on my last day.... but I made it.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/03/2016:  02:37:17

I used to say I didn't plan on retiring because I loved my job. I still love what I do buy loathe the company that bought us out five years ago. Now I can't wait to call it quits.

DeanT - Posted - 10/03/2016:  04:27:30

If I could have kept turning wrenches, I'd still be out there!
