Done up in an American flag scheme?

OM45GE - Posted - 06/27/2014:  06:22:58

That would be cool, but no.

There was a house in the town where I grew up that had the roof shingled as an American flag. It was accurate and was done after Eisenhower had them do the 50 star version in the late 50's. Supposedly the owner was a private pilot and wanted his house to stand out when he flew over. The house is gone now, along with the flag roof.

Here it is June 27 and would you believe there is some snow on the ground and on housetops here in Cheyenne,Wyoming.....sheesh

OM45GE - Posted - 06/27/2014:  17:46:05

I used to have a photo of me and a truck at the top of Independence Pass in Colorado taken in  mid June. You could see the snow pack over the truck.

chuckv97 - Posted - 06/27/2014:  18:50:02

Yeah,up in the passes for sure. I've driven through snow or snow flurries every month of the year. There's more snow along the southern Rockies passes than there is up in Canada. Colorado passes are 3 to 4 thousand feet higher than in BC.

DeanT - Posted - 06/28/2014:  00:13:16

Send some of that snow to Kansas!

OM45GE - Posted - 06/28/2014:  06:23:37

Do you want Wyoming snow or Colorado snow?

DeanT - Posted - 06/28/2014:  06:52:13

Both!

dat - Posted - 06/28/2014:  06:56:11

we get rain in the winter,  I can probably count on my fingers how many times I've actually seen it snow in my life

OM45GE - Posted - 06/28/2014:  08:32:14

I've probably seen it snow around here close to a thousand times in the last sixty three years.

dat - Posted - 06/28/2014:  10:24:42

I like the way snow looks, but my fingers don't work well when they're in snow

OM45GE - Posted - 06/28/2014:  10:36:35

There's nothing quite like doing a drum brake job on a 20 degree day.

dat - Posted - 06/28/2014:  10:45:11

I'll bet,    20 degrees and we're shut down

OM45GE - Posted - 06/28/2014:  11:53:46

I don't know why but for some reason I had to do a few brake jobs outside in the winter. I remember one time one of the shoe springs snapped over and hit my hand. It was so numb I didn't realize that it had torn my thumb open until I noticed the brake fluid on the snow was really blood.

chuckv97 - Posted - 06/28/2014:  18:05:59

Nothing like a bit of brake fluid in with your bloodstream - might give a person a special kind of high.
Never did a brake job outside, but chaining up with those triples on the drive tires is a real blast.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/28/2014:  18:58:43

One winter I was driving an old R model Mack in northern New England in sub zero temps. My heat quit working  about 200 miles out of the terminal. I kept going with hat and gloves on until I went over a big bump and the driver's side window disappeared into the door. I pulled off the next exit and called dispatch to send out another truck. They were pissed but I would have frozen to death.

DeanT - Posted - 06/28/2014:  20:23:37

We don't have to worry about any automotive stuff  when it snows. In Kansas, they shut everything down and everyone stays home

chuckv97 - Posted - 06/28/2014:  20:42:19

I was in Liberty ,KS about 6 years ago when there was a huge freezing rain/ice storm. I thought I'd head out the next day- it was crazy- I looked down a side road and all the wooden telephone poles were laying flat on the ground, musta been for half a mile. Came up to a low hanging electrical cable across the road- just got under it. Finally got far enough north in Nebraska to where it wasn't icy anymore. Heard on the news later it was the worst ice storm in decades.

DeanT - Posted - 06/29/2014:  00:25:12

We do get nasty ice storms. Knocks down a lot of trees and power lines. Sometimes they kill people.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/29/2014:  08:16:51

I pulled off the highway into a shopping center in a freezing rain. I set the brakes and was doing my log book when I had the feeling I was moving. I looked up and my entire rig was sliding sideways across the parking lot towards a light pole. It stopped about 20 feet short. I was just along for the ride.

DeanT - Posted - 06/29/2014:  10:29:39

Add the Kansas wind to the ice storms... and the sliding feature gets even more interesting...

chuckv97 - Posted - 06/29/2014:  13:13:38

Oops, made a fiddle tune slip. That should be Liberal,Kansas not Liberty.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/29/2014:  16:06:54

I've had wind induced lane changes in Kansas. The wind doesn't blow, it sucks.

DeanT - Posted - 06/29/2014:  16:59:04

A week ago, the wind blew a train off the tracks...

OM45GE - Posted - 06/30/2014:  02:52:57

Are you serious? Imagine the forces involved.

thats a bad storm to blow a train off the tracks

DeanT - Posted - 06/30/2014:  06:00:50

We must have strong trees here, because they get bent over almost every day. I think we get two calm days a year.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/30/2014:  06:28:54

It's a good thing you don't have anemophobia.

dat - Posted - 06/30/2014:  06:59:22

I've heard of trees cut into lumber from windy areas that twists and warps bad after it dries because of being flexed and pushed a lot from windy areas

OM45GE - Posted - 06/30/2014:  11:11:25

The wind can completely twist trees.

We see those letters from business signs blowing around all the time. I don't even know why people use those signs around here, they are always missing letters, and often you can't read what they used to say...

OM45GE - Posted - 06/30/2014:  15:43:03

I bet Mother Nature could come up with some interesting signs by selectively removing letters.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/30/2014:  15:45:33

There used to be a strip club near here called "The Golden Banana". For years two of the neon letters were burnt out so it said "The Golden Nana". It always made me laugh thinking of a bunch of grandmothers taking their clothes off and pole dancing.

DeanT - Posted - 06/30/2014:  16:42:44

Some grandmas are pretty hot

OM45GE - Posted - 06/30/2014:  17:05:34

True indeed.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/30/2014:  17:06:57

In the mental image that leapt to mind, the naked nanas weren't that hot.

DeanT - Posted - 07/01/2014:  06:19:37

We are in complete control of our mental images... or are we?

OM45GE - Posted - 07/01/2014:  06:22:00

I don't. Some of mine are completely unbidden.

Made it back from Vegas. I'm exhausted.

dat - Posted - 07/01/2014:  13:28:31

OM45GE - Posted - 07/01/2014:  14:24:17

Was it business or pleasure?

DeanT - Posted - 07/01/2014:  16:04:27

Did anything happen in Vegas that needs to stay in Vegas?

OM45GE - Posted - 07/01/2014:  17:41:15

I think she's resting.

DeanT - Posted - 07/01/2014:  18:55:57

Last time I went to Vegas, I came back married...

OM45GE - Posted - 07/02/2014:  02:39:13

Was she something that should have stayed in Vegas?

dat - Posted - 07/02/2014:  05:45:39

anytime I think about going to Vegas to loose money, I go to the gas station or grocery store and loose some there,   it's all I can stand to loose but at least I get something for it

OM45GE - Posted - 07/02/2014:  06:04:38

I am completely not a gambler. I work my ass off for what I have and the thought of losing on a wager makes me ill. My now ex brother in law gave us a night out at the horse track years ago inlluding a nice dinner ad $500 to gamble with. The food was good and the horses impressive, but I didn't even enjoy playing with his money.
