My index finger on my picking hand does the same thing! I've been picking with my T-M-R fingers more and more. I've always used 4 fingers, but lately the index finger is too unreliable, so it just watches.

There are classical guitarists - David Leisner is one- that had to quit playing for years and slowly retrain their brain and fingers. Nick Hornbuckle of John Reischman and the Jaybirds got it and learned to play 2finger banjo...,he is remarkable ,,the sounds he can get.

Truck driving was tough on my hands and I've had some overuse injuries from music over the years, but all my fingers are still working pretty well (knock on wood!).

Due to many years of "grunt work"/ driving delivery trucks/, and lots of lifting heavy things from "here to there" - - I've got arthritic fingers also, and they sure don't move like they used to to in my youth when it comes to picking.  I have nothing but admiration for folks with disabilities who can play so well, despite their handicap.  Barry Abernathy (especially) comes to mind.

I never was very athletic.  Bicycling and X-C skiing were pretty much my only athletic activities, and that was just for leisure and fun.

Looks like I may have stopped by at a bad time.
Just made it back from a little trip through the Ozarks, we left to go up there on Thanksgiving, now home and it's back to work Monday. Been doing great, nothing exciting just enjoying life
