I didn't recognize it.

It's called Foggy Mountain Rock.  Here's Gene Wooten doing it:

Incredible.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/11/2015:  19:36:03

Oh yeah - now I remember Earl playing it

OM45GE - Posted - 12/12/2015:  05:16:48

I spent about an hour watching various versions on You Tube. Good stuff.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/12/2015:  06:09:55

It's interesting looking back to the '50's and seeing how bluegrass (and other genres) reacted to the big rock'n'roll craze

OM45GE - Posted - 12/12/2015:  08:00:52

I was just reading an article in The New Yorker about Sam Phillips, Sun Studio and the birth of rock and roll.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/12/2015:  08:39:43

Bill, was that about the new Peter Guralnick book? I heard him interviewed on (I think it was) NPR this week. On second thought ,it was on the Outlaw Country channel on Sirius XM

OM45GE - Posted - 12/12/2015:  13:50:58

Yes it was Chuck. Very interesting. I'll have to look for the NPR interview.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/12/2015:  16:27:27

I read a couple of Guralnick's books years ago. He knows/researches his stuff. I read somewhere that Sam Philips, in order to get that Sun Records echo, aimed one of the speakers into the toilet bowl and hung a mic from the ceiling.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/12/2015:  19:36:16

He liked imperfect sounds.

dat - Posted - 12/14/2015:  13:08:50

he would like my picking thenapprove

OM45GE - Posted - 12/14/2015:  13:55:10

LOL. There's a story that Ike Turner's guitarist came in to record "Rocket 88" with a damaged amplifier. It had gotten wet in the trunk of the car and was making a distorted sound. Sam liked it and it went on the record. It was the birth of the fuzz tone.

dat - Posted - 12/15/2015:  09:59:10

there was some good music came from that time era,   todays radio is a dull blur, all songs blend in the same.  back then each song popped, you knew at the first note who and what it was

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/15/2015:  13:38:41

Yeah,, before corporate hijacking of commercial music

OM45GE - Posted - 12/15/2015:  15:26:06

There is some really good stuff out there today but I don't think it makes it onto the radio much.

DeanT - Posted - 12/15/2015:  16:59:46

I've been listening to a local alternative station, and local public radio in the evenings and weekends... yes lots of really good stuff that never sees mainstream airplay

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/15/2015:  19:12:30

I've always been more interested in music genres that aren't mainstream

OM45GE - Posted - 12/16/2015:  03:24:00

I've found some wonderful music browsing the "recommended for you" selections on iTunes or You Tube.

dat - Posted - 12/16/2015:  05:53:50

probably so, no radio stations play much other than mainstream stuff here

DeanT - Posted - 12/16/2015:  09:30:38

On the flip side... there is a lot of real crap on the non mainstream side too.

dat - Posted - 12/16/2015:  10:56:27

pandora can come up with some strange songs, then I wonder how they figured that would be good when you've thumbed down every song like it, but some are good an I wouldn't have ever heard them if it wasn't for pandora

OM45GE - Posted - 12/16/2015:  18:01:33

You can spend hours exploring in there.

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/16/2015:  18:19:23

There's so many options nowadays - I can't keep up with it all

DeanT - Posted - 12/16/2015:  18:50:49

our cable TV has over 100 music stations

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/16/2015:  18:54:06

Ya, just listening to "Folk Roots" on cable tv now. Kate Rusby singing a haunting Celtic type song.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/17/2015:  03:29:26

What do you listen to in the truck?

DeanT - Posted - 12/17/2015:  04:35:19

If I have a choice, I listen blues

In the truck I've got Sirius XM. I switch between Bluegrass Junction, Outlaw Country ( Jerry Jeff, Willie, Townes, Lyle Lovett, etc.), Coffee House, Forties , Bluesville, and Classical. They used to have a folk channel called "The Village", but discontinued it. Now it's on "The Bridge" on Sunday morning for only 3 hours.

I just found "SONGZA" , a free APP on my IPad , which has lots of BG and folk roots stuff also.

If they drop BG Jctn., mon Dieu, then we'll march on Washington.

I won't be able to march, I have to work so I can pay my bills

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/17/2015:  09:43:54

haha, same here. Maybe some of us could do a cyber-march.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/17/2015:  14:34:33

A lot of the time I don't listen to anything when I drive. I like just listening to the engine and the tires.

dat - Posted - 12/17/2015:  14:45:35

I do that, I don't drive for a living, but I do drive 60 miles a day, sometimes I'll go a few days without turning on the radio.  usually after going through the channels and not finding anything, I turn it off, then may or may not turn it back on for a while

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/17/2015:  14:47:48

Oh yeah,, sometimes I need the quiet.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/17/2015:  16:01:04

I find music distracting when I drive.

DeanT - Posted - 12/17/2015:  16:10:41

Me to!!! I always turn the radio off in heavy traffic, so I can concentrate on driving

dmiller - Posted - 12/17/2015:  19:57:13

When driving in town - - I usually have talk radio on or (if I have one of "my guys" from the group home riding around with me) I'll have the "retro-country" station on, or a bluegrass CD playing.

When on the interstate heading back home to Indiana, I usually have no music playing at all.  I've seen the scenery from here to there many times over the decades, but I like to drive with little (if any) audio interrupting the drive.  The one exception to that is that I DO like to listen to the crackle of the CB radio, even when no one is talking.  That reminds me - - I need to get a new antenna for it.

OM45GE - Posted - 12/18/2015:  03:43:51

I listened to the CB when I was trucking but don't have one in the car.

What's your CB handle? Mine was Lazy Bones. Fellow drivers started calling me that after I made five round trips between Boston and Philadelphia in a week.

DeanT - Posted - 12/18/2015:  05:23:20

CB's are still around?

dat - Posted - 12/18/2015:  05:45:12

I still have a marko 100 F booster a cobra 148 and a teaberry mighty t in the barn, none have been hooked up in years

chuckv97 - Posted - 12/18/2015:  06:06:35

I've got a small cobra , but hardly use it. Too much trash talk on there now, and many drivers are hooked up with cell phones and headsets. CB's still seem to be used more in the southeastern states.

dat - Posted - 12/18/2015:  07:02:45

cell phones have pretty much taken over where the cb's were around here too

DeanT - Posted - 12/18/2015:  14:42:47

We used to sit in our cars in the senior parking lot at high school. and talk on our cb's before school started. We were totally cool.

dat - Posted - 12/18/2015:  14:45:15

I would sit in my truck and talk over the TV's in the area, it would open garage doors too

OM45GE - Posted - 12/18/2015:  19:25:33

10-4 good buddy.

DeanT - Posted - 12/19/2015:  06:16:32

I remember when our TV's and AM radios would pick up weird stuff

dat - Posted - 12/19/2015:  06:39:49

a vacuum cleaner or a sewing machine would really mess up a tv screen
