I'm thinking about 1/4" is the lack of cartilage in my knees....
DeanT - Posted - 09/14/2012: 16:58:42
The older I get, the more running becomes shuffling. But I've already had two friends die from a heart attack, and family and co-workers die from lung cancer and heart disease. I'm at a point where things go down hill fast if ya don't fight it. So a-shuffeling I will go.....
OM45GE - Posted - 09/15/2012: 07:42:57
I had a running coach try to show me a different gait that was supposed to spare my knees. But other things hurt even more, so it's a-walking I will go.
DeanT - Posted - 09/15/2012: 08:56:32
I'm toe running now, to save what's left of my knees... the first time I tried it, my calves burned and I couldn't go down steps for a day or two.... but they're getting used to it now, and it's actually working
OM45GE - Posted - 09/15/2012: 14:41:30
How about the arches of your feet? I've heard some guys complain that they hurt toe running.
DeanT - Posted - 09/15/2012: 15:03:39
No trouble at all with my arches. Keep in mind I'm topping out at 4 miles at an 8 minute pace max. Usually slower and sometime just 2 miles. I could see toe running at a faster pace or longer distances would definitely take some work, and trouble if not taking it gradual. So far so good!
DeanT - Posted - 09/15/2012: 19:47:51
Be prepared for some sore calfs for a few days but it does work. BTW, I just got home from toe shuffling 5 miles :)
OM45GE - Posted - 09/16/2012: 17:40:36
I can't ride a bike and walk the dog at the same time. It's walk or run.
OM45GE - Posted - 09/17/2012: 06:22:28
Toby would stop for a pee or a sniff and I would be on the ground in a flash.
OM45GE - Posted - 09/17/2012: 07:53:06
Toby is my excuse, staying healthy is my motivation. We do four to six miles a day year round.
DeanT - Posted - 09/17/2012: 08:06:15
My male greyhound does that to me when we run... if I'm not paying attention, and he decides on a tree temptation he can't resist, we both end up with whiplash
dat - Posted - 09/17/2012: 08:57:48
I walk a lot at work, but the normal walking doesn't do much, I need to get out and do some extra, I'm not in bad shape, just need to be in better shape
OM45GE - Posted - 09/17/2012: 09:53:13
Our next-door neighbor was walking her Golden Retriever. She went left, the dog went right and she ended up with a broken shoulder socket. Toby's don't similar stunts with me but so far I haven't broken anything.

when I was about 10 or 11, I was holding the leash of my brother in laws bluetick coon hound, that dog caught the smell of something and drug me for a while before I got wise enough to let go
dat - Posted - 09/17/2012: 10:45:48
here is my brother and two kids at his retirement, he'll start his new job next monday

About three years ago Toby pulled me just enough that I lost my balance and scraped my knee on the pavement. No big deal except I got a MRSA infection. They about killed me with antibiotics but they were able to kill the infection. They were talking about amputation if it didn't work. I was a nervous puppy for sure.
dat - Posted - 09/17/2012: 12:10:15
the doctor is about to wear me out with the west nile stuff, I've felt good for over a week now but he still wants me to keep going back for more bloodwork and tests.
DeanT - Posted - 09/17/2012: 12:38:06
hey your pictures didn't work :(
Two summers ago My dogs broke my right pinkey going after a yappy dog that was off leash. The next day I was playing a 4th of July gig with my hand looking like the stay-puff marshmellow man. Man that hurt!
OM45GE - Posted - 09/18/2012: 04:15:59
It scared the hell out of me for sure. The infectious disease doc wasn't wasting any time either. He was giving the antibiotics 24 hours to show improvement or he wanted to amputate. He said that the joints are a problem because if the infection got into the synovial fluid it would become systemic and could kill in hours.
dat - Posted - 09/18/2012: 06:08:40
anytime they talk about cutting off body parts it's bad, glad the antibiotics worked
OM45GE - Posted - 09/18/2012: 09:21:44
I saw that - she had just had a baby right? Now they're talking about a arm transplant.
OM45GE - Posted - 09/18/2012: 09:46:28
It sure is amazing.
This is the woman I was talking about:

The company I work for makes some amazing, life saving drugs. We also make skin for patients who have been burned aver too much of their bodies to do skin grafts. That's pretty wild science too.
DeanT - Posted - 09/18/2012: 10:18:21
Wow. That's not the person in our local news. The story I saw was a young woman that got a cut from zip-lining, that got infected. Sad!

stupid knee is killing me this morning. How am I ever supposed to run a marathon if my knee hurts after two miles each evening...
dat - Posted - 09/19/2012: 07:48:31
I walked two miles yesterday evening with my bride, not far, but better than sitting on the porch drinking ice tea
DeanT - Posted - 09/19/2012: 08:07:39
My dogs make my runs more interesting than maybe they should be...
DeanT - Posted - 09/19/2012: 12:05:58
so far so good... wide open space... golf course.... dogs on leash... skunks wander off
