They had a MONSTER roto-rooter thingy... my poor toiled was in the next room upsidedown, and they were pulling mulberry tree roots out of the drain pipe. Of course by the time it was all done, I had a new supply line, all new toilet guts, and have been briefed about how rock salt will kill roots, and too much off-balance plunging will blow a seal, and it's not a good idea to use paper clips and C-clamps to hold rusty old toilet guts together. They loved the plastic cup over the float valve so the leaking spray wouldn't go over the top and all over the floor.

What a great description Dean! McGyver would be jealous!

DeanT - Posted - 06/01/2012:  17:43:49

I'm just glad they didn't look inside my other toilet...

.... but then that's why I really wanted to make sure the one they fixed... was reliablecheeky

OM45GE - Posted - 06/01/2012:  18:44:31

We just had to have three toilets replaced. The new ones use about a cup of water per flush.

DeanT - Posted - 06/01/2012:  19:49:13

I think mine are from when the house was built in 1947

OM45GE - Posted - 06/02/2012:  03:51:05

Out house was built in 1957 and two of them were definitely original. I had replaced the guts on two them but they still leaked. They had to go when they started leaking at the tank seal and would have ruined floors and ceilings below them. The third one went when we remodeled the bathroom. I don't usually get excited about plumbing fixtures, but the new toilets are great. They're 1.2 gallons per flush (not really a cup!) cool and haven't clogged yet. They're also taller than the old ones which my creaky body likes.

DeanT - Posted - 06/02/2012:  08:28:04

I think after yesterday... the next time I might get new ones. Oh yeah, this morning I go to soak my creeky bones in the bath tub... and the stupid drain valve won’t close, and the tub won’t fill. Frikafraka....

OM45GE - Posted - 06/02/2012:  11:39:25

We'll at least we're not the guy our plumber had to rescue who was cutting into a wall with a Saws all  and cut through the water main to the house. He went to the shutoff and the handle snapped off when he tried to close it.

DeanT - Posted - 06/02/2012:  12:48:30

That would make a day go south pretty quickly...

OM45GE - Posted - 06/02/2012:  12:51:59

You said it.

DeanT - Posted - 06/02/2012:  19:21:24

Our bass player just got out of the hospital... phenomena almost killed him. He had a heart attack a year ago. Damn. He can’t die on us, we got too many shows to do.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 06/02/2012:  19:24:17

I would love to get new toilets. The house was all shut up before I bought it and there was nastiness growing in the toilets. I've cleaned them a gazillion times but they still get gross super fast. I think there must be a lot of bacteria and stuff that built up when the house was vacant.

I use those tablets that are supposed to clean every time you flush and you can tell when they run out (and they sure as heck don't last 1000 flushes because I know I ain't flushing that much and I've had to put new ones in five or six times in the two years I've lived in the house) because the toilet starts looking skanky again.

I was thinking just this morning I need to buy some more because I'm out again.

DeanT - Posted - 06/02/2012:  20:03:23

and here I thought skanky was a Kansas area word...

OM45GE - Posted - 06/03/2012:  04:02:37

We have skanky in the Boston area too. You don't want to be called skanky.

DeanT - Posted - 06/03/2012:  09:19:11

Around here the word gets used a lot along with a certain street downtown

OM45GE - Posted - 06/03/2012:  09:32:44

Is it a busy street?

DeanT - Posted - 06/03/2012:  09:35:08

yep, lot of motels too

OM45GE - Posted - 06/03/2012:  11:15:10

Hourly rates?

DeanT - Posted - 06/03/2012:  18:05:20

Yep.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 06/03/2012:  19:53:05

You know you've got trouble when your toilet starts charging hourly rates.

DeanT - Posted - 06/04/2012:  00:14:55

Like the toilets at the airports that used to take quarters

OM45GE - Posted - 06/04/2012:  02:48:37

Leading to the graffiti:

When I was in England two years ago some of the public restrooms in the Tube stations were pay to get in. I remember just after my parents and sister arrived we were looking for a restroom and I was frantically going through my pockets for change because they had just arrived and only had large bills and no change. PITA.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/04/2012:  06:48:17

We have these public pay toilets near my office. They're circular and when you pay (cash or credit card) a door slides open and closed behind you. You do your business and when you leave, the door shuts and the whole place gets cleaned and sanitized automatically. They're pretty amazing.

DeanT - Posted - 06/04/2012:  07:09:16

My dad would tell me to crawl under the door to save money

dat - Posted - 06/04/2012:  07:47:47

with my luck it would be free to get in but have to pay to get out, or worse yet, have to pay for paper

OM45GE - Posted - 06/04/2012:  08:00:08

I don't think an ant could crawl under these doors. They're pretty tightly sealed. I hadn't thought about getting trapped in one though!

DeanT - Posted - 06/04/2012:  10:07:22

I hate bugs in the bathroom... never know where they will crawl

OM45GE - Posted - 06/04/2012:  10:38:28

I especially hate being surprised by them.

OR WASPS IN THE OUTHOUSE

OM45GE - Posted - 06/04/2012:  10:49:43

I once surprised a very pissed off (and stinky) raccoon in the outhouse at my Dad's hunting camp.

DeanT - Posted - 06/04/2012:  10:57:08

stories of snakes in the pluming always haunt me at the wrong time....

OM45GE - Posted - 06/04/2012:  10:58:03

My sister lives in Florida and just had a large toad come up through the toilet.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 06/04/2012:  11:08:52

My younger sister is an archivist and has worked with some fairly old/rare documents that they go through all kinds of hoops to keep safe. When she was at Iowa State, there was a vault with all the rare stuff in it and if there was a fire, the door to the vault would lock and all the air would get sucked out and replaced with this poisonous gas that wouldn't burn, so none of the documents would burn.

There was an emergency button in the vault, so if you were in there you could press the button and it wouldn't suck out the air and pump in the gas. But apparently the button was on the far side of the vault from the door, so there was no way someone could then release the button and make it out the door before the whole thing sealed.

My sister was not enthused about spending lots of time in there.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/04/2012:  11:36:05

I would have nightmares about that.

dat - Posted - 06/04/2012:  12:20:49

she could have taken up diving and then brought her oxygen tank in with her, nuthin to it

OM45GE - Posted - 06/04/2012:  12:41:55

Wouldn't need much air for that either.

dat - Posted - 06/05/2012:  06:27:15

We're headed to thinner air this weekend,  headed to Arkansas, set up the tent and do some exploring and maby a little fishing

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 06/05/2012:  06:33:45

I don't think I've ever been to Arkansas.

There's only a handful of states I've never been to and I'm pretty sure that's one of them.

DeanT - Posted - 06/05/2012:  06:36:47

Arkansas is our next door neighbor... oh yeah and there aint no "w" in Arkansas

dat - Posted - 06/05/2012:  06:45:17

there ain't no "W",   but I saw a saw in Arkansas that could out saw any saw you ever saw

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 06/05/2012:  06:51:00

That looks really peaceful.

dat - Posted - 06/05/2012:  07:04:05

it is, it's about 5 and a half hours drive, but a couple of days there and you can really relax

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 06/05/2012:  08:13:16

I was just reading somewhere about a woman who has had two rattlesnakes in her kitchen in the last week (and a garter snake).

I'm thinking the bat and the bird in my house weren't so bad.

dat - Posted - 06/05/2012:  08:22:26

our chickens eat small snakes, and they'll make a big racket when a big snake is around.   so far we haven't had many in the house,  I can only remember two snakes actually in out house, and that's been a while back

OM45GE - Posted - 06/05/2012:  09:49:14

We see snakes from time to time, but they don't bother anyone. I figure they help keep the mice under control.

dat - Posted - 06/05/2012:  09:57:47

I used to kill the snakes when I found them in the hen house, then we started getting mice.   now I leave the snakes alone........ no more mice have been seen
