I got caught by a speed camera the other day.  I was really annoyed with myself because I know there's a camera there and I usually don't drive that fast--never did even before the camera.  But there was a light out and people were acting weird about who should go and who should stop.  I only had to make a right turn, so I went pretty quickly.  But then I was trying to get clear of everyone acting weird (and then trying to cut each other off once they were through the intersection because they were pissed about others cutting them off) and I guess I stepped on the gas a little harder than usual.  I was doing 47 or so in a 35.

The camera only catches you over 45.

I got caught speeding the other day, I figure the trooper either recognized me or didn't want to do the paper work, I topped a hill doing a little over, he flashed his red and blues for a second then turned them off and pointed at me, then stayed where he was in his tahoe.

I live one house away from one of our city cop's favorite speed trap hiding places. They stop someone, write em up, then fly around the block and do it again. I bet they break 100 speeders in a few hours.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/16/2016:  03:24:32

My sister used to date a state trooper in New Hampshire. He claimed that he once stopped a Ferrari for going 50 in a 35 mph zone. The owner was upset because he thought he was doing closer to 60 and didn't think the car's speedometer was off that far. He asked if he could go back through the radar and calibrate the speedo. He was doing over 100 when he went through the radar and kept on going. I never believed it, but it's a good story.

That reminds me of the joke about the guy on a river bank with a bucket full of fish, and the game warden came up and was going to ticket him and confiscate all his gear.  The guy dumped the fish into the river and told the warden that these were his pet fish that he was just bringing them to the river to get some exercise.  And then he said that when he called them back, they 'd all swim back to shore and everyone would go back home.

The warden said:  O.K., they've be n gone long enough.  Call your pet fish back NOW!.

The guy on the river bank said:  What fish?

I've never owned a car that could do 100...

dat - Posted - 06/16/2016:  09:53:17

or the guy that took a game warden fishing and started throwing dynamite, the game warden said you can't do that, then the guy handed the game warden a lit stick and asked him if he was gonna talk or fish

I've had several trucks that would run faster than I needed, probably the fastest and quickest was my 78 K 5 blazer, 350 built up pretty well, 202 heads, good cam and 3:73 front and rear differential,  I really needed a 4:10 with the 35 inch tires, but it ran good, to fast for what it was

OM45GE - Posted - 06/16/2016:  11:50:40

I've had a bunch of really fast cars. My E-Type Jag would do an honest 150. I had a Shelby Mustang that would do over 125 but it would scare the crap out of you doing it. My current car is governed to 155 but they say it would do 180 without the electronic nanny.

dat - Posted - 06/16/2016:  12:47:18

I try not to drive any faster than I can think now a days.  most of the time people pass me on the highway

OM45GE - Posted - 06/16/2016:  14:09:50

I have a hard time resisting using a fast car or motorcycle. Like a kid in a candy store.

dat - Posted - 06/16/2016:  14:23:45

I used to push the edge pretty often, probably still do in a boat, but I've toned it down in a car or truck.    I still like the feel going down the river around bends with the throttle wide open

DeanT - Posted - 06/16/2016:  16:55:25

I don't even think my VW bug or Dodge Polara could do 80. My Chevy truck had a bent frame and was always turning left. My ford 6 banger could barely do 50 with a tail wind. My Honda Accord might make it to 100, but I'm too old and slow to try it.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/16/2016:  17:33:33

I'd forgotten about the boat. That satisfies my need for speed too.

DeanT - Posted - 06/16/2016:  18:33:36

my wife drives fast enough for both of us..

OM45GE - Posted - 06/17/2016:  03:25:42

My ex-wife was a speed demon. She was driving home from the mountains one time when I had been drinking a lot. Two friends were following us on their motorcycles. They told me later that they backed off when she hit 120 mph on the interstate. I was passed out in the passenger seat and didn't know a thing.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 06/17/2016:  06:34:13

My sister always drives the speed limit.  I suspect she is the cause of a lot of road rage.

I usually try to stay within 10 miles of the speed limit.  My experience is that they won't bother stopping you if you're less than 10 miles over.  On the Beltway, though, I drive closer to 75, because that's closer to what traffic is actually going, even though the speed limit is 55.

A couple years ago I was going home for Christmas.  I was in Ohio, and the speed limit there is 70.  I think I was doing 78.  There had been a couple of cars leap frogging me. (That's one of my biggest pet peeves.  I use my cruise control in Ohio so I maintain a steady speed.  I'll pass a car.  Then suddenly the car speeds up and flies by me and out of sight.  A couple miles later I'll suddenly pass them again.  Then they get pissy and speed up and fly past again.  Sometimes I'll get irritated enough that I'll get off at a rest stop before I really need to, to get gas or something, just to let that car get way past me so that it doesn't keep happening.)  So these two cars had been leap frogging me, and both of them were just starting to fly by again when suddenly they hit their brakes.  We were approaching an underpass and on the other side was a state police building and a cop waiting to get onto the highway.

So he pulled onto the highway behind me and then caught up to me and sat right behind me for a bit.  I think he was hoping that I'd speed up to 80.  Then he pulled up right beside me.  I think he was going to gesture to me or something to slow down, but I kept looking straight ahead.  I figured I was speeding.  If he wanted to stop me for speeding, he could do that.  But I wasn't going to acknowledge him other than that.  The highway there was 3 lanes wide, so there was me in the right lane, him in the middle lane, and this whole passle of cars lining up behind us, not wanting to pass the cop.

Luckily after about 8 miles of this, we came up on rest stop.  I needed gas anyway.  I started to pull into the rest stop and the cop pulled in behind me.  I thought for sure he was going to pull me over or something still, but he just went straight through.  I think he wanted to let that big batch of cars behind us go on ahead and forget about him.  I used the facilities, got my gas, and got back on the road.  About a mile further one I saw him--he'd pulled over some sports car.

Ohio is the craziest drivers on the planet. Especially near Cincinnati.

dat - Posted - 06/17/2016:  10:32:29

I don't care for Houston, Austin, Dallas type traffic that has a lot of folks all packed together doing 80 or so on a 6 lane one way highway,   I get a little nervous.   I drive it at times and haven't had a wreck, but folks like me that don't like it probably cause accidents in places like that

my little boat is about like these things here, a 14 ft with a 25 hp (and 30 hp carb)

I have a few friends that have the old duracraft b model boats, which is a 14 ft v bottom fishing boat, rated for a 20 hp and they put 40 and 60 hp motors on them

I was on the river in my ski boat doing about 50 mph with two ducks flying parallel to me. They were booking it.

dat - Posted - 06/18/2016:  07:09:41

if you're going 50, a big ol mallard gets off the water and you pass them up before they get into good flight, at 50 a wood duck or teal jump up and are flying right with you in no time.

it is illegal, used to just be a fine and loose your hunting license for the rest of that year, now it's a felony.

Not much of a hunter myself.  I bought a Rossi Circuit Judge 410/ 45 the other day.  Fun gun to shoot and once I get done with "chores" here at the house today, I'm going to take it out again and waste some more lead.  I just shoot at targets like discarded plastic two liter pop bottles that I've filled with water.

dat - Posted - 06/18/2016:  10:17:17

plinking is fun, back when ammo was cheap I would go out on a weekend and take several guns and spend a morning shooting, anything from paper targets to coke cans an two liter bottles.  I have just as much fun poking holes in paper as hunting, but if you do well hunting, you get some groceries out of the deal.   I enjoy the food, but I enjoy the time out shooting as well

chuckv97 - Posted - 06/18/2016:  11:54:53

We used to do that..."empty pop bottles was all we would kill"....."Paradise" by John Prine

DeanT - Posted - 06/18/2016:  15:26:27

my old band used to play that a lot! I'm not a hunter at all. I haven't shot my revolver for 25 years. But it's always ready.

dmiller - Posted - 06/18/2016:  16:31:35

"Paradise" is a good old tune that's stood the "test of time".   Our band did it too back in the mid-70's -  - but we picked up the pace/ tempo whenever we played it, and did it bluegrass style.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/18/2016:  19:35:51

My musical partner and I have Paradise on our set lists.

we recently started doing the crawdad song. We had got a request. we thought it was kind of goofy song... but have found out every one knows it and loves it.

dmiller - Posted - 06/19/2016:  07:43:05

Play that at a bar and if it's late enough and the folks are "oiled up" enough - - they'll sing along.

That was some nice picking.

DeanT - Posted - 06/20/2016:  06:14:22

Yeah... and not that smooth, or perfect timing. However... I did pick up the cool bend he did in that video, and got it down yesterday :)

OM45GE - Posted - 06/20/2016:  08:36:19

I noted and liked the bend too

dat - Posted - 06/20/2016:  12:26:23

as long as it's been since I even picked up my banjer, I'll have to practice the forward roll for a couple of hours to get started

dmiller - Posted - 06/20/2016:  14:02:52

My right hand fingers don't work like they used too.  They're a mite arthritic and it takes some real "work" to get them to move even half-way fast and hit the right strings all the time, so I don't pick the banjo as much as I used to.  My fiddle is my "go to" instrument these days.

dat - Posted - 06/20/2016:  14:13:50

sanding gets to where my hands hurt pretty bad, I've cut back on my wood working,  I need to think about more power tools and less hand finishing

dmiller - Posted - 06/20/2016:  14:45:46

About 15 or so years ago, a friend of mine had a son who was graduating from High School, and she was going to give him the whole "graduation party" thing.  About a month before his graduation, she decided she wanted to add a deck to the back of her house to make it a better "party place" for the event.  A bunch of us old farts showed up to help her dig the post holes for the deck foundation/ supports.  It took us forever to even get 12" into the ground because of the hard clay and rocks and roots that were all under the surface.  We gave up and then her son showed up with a few of his friends, and they finished the job.  In no time flat.  They tore through that rocky ground and dug the deck's foundation posts like it was sawdust.  All of us "old farts" looked at each other and realized "We ain't young no more".

DeanT - Posted - 06/20/2016:  15:52:52

I played my solo today with the bends, and it worked out good. My arthritis in my hands is getting worse. I know my playing well days are numbered.
