I've never had a lantern, but I've had my share of Mag Lights

dmiller - Posted - 10/14/2015:  16:06:09

I discovered the Mag lights back in '85.  Bought one of the mini-mags for a rock climbing thing I was going to out near Rapid City, South Dakota that year. Was a handy (and pretty much indestructible) light.

dmiller - Posted - 10/14/2015:  16:11:59

I've also got a 3 D cell Mag light in the car.

These lights are great, and handy for "personal protection" in a pinch.

DeanT - Posted - 10/14/2015:  19:24:15

I still have my GI mag light I carried my whole career, still works great

OM45GE - Posted - 10/15/2015:  03:23:11

I left one in a drawer too long and the batteries leaked and fused the barrel of the light solid. Other than that, I've never had a problem with Mag lights.

dat - Posted - 10/15/2015:  05:52:47

I have a LED mini mag now, that is a bright little light, and the batteries last a great long time

OM45GE - Posted - 10/15/2015:  06:33:36

I have one of those too - I carry it when I'm walking at night. I didn't realize the light flashed when the batteries were getting low and thought it was broken. I guess I should have read the packaging.

DeanT - Posted - 10/15/2015:  06:40:58

I need to get one of them!

OM45GE - Posted - 10/15/2015:  06:50:17

This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine!

DeanT - Posted - 10/15/2015:  13:24:57

we sang that song in Sunday school

dat - Posted - 10/15/2015:  13:36:13

the led mini mag has 4 settings, bright, dim, blinking and s.o.s.  when the batteries get low, no tellin what mode its gonna switch to

dmiller - Posted - 10/15/2015:  13:46:35

I saw a J5 TACTICAL (led with bright/ dim/ and blinking) advertised for a little over 10 bucks each.

I bought three.  I kept one and gave the other two away as gifts.  About 4" long.  A very good light.

DeanT - Posted - 10/15/2015:  16:35:39

I've seen them at Atwoods, next time I'm in there I'm getting one..

I used to run a teenager folk group for a local Catholic Church and played the banjo on that. It was a pretty big hit with the parishioners.

DeanT - Posted - 10/16/2015:  06:50:51

we used to do a medley with This little light of mine, I saw the light, Circle be unbroken, and Do-Lord .... in the bars! And folks loved it!

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/16/2015:  07:14:35

I remember bands doing Gene MacLellan's "Put Your Hand in the Hand" in bars. It was a Jesus song ,and a big hit in Canada, not sure if you had it in the States. (MacLellan wrote "Snowbird" ,among others BTW)

dat - Posted - 10/16/2015:  08:08:14

not to get religious, but Jesus spent time in places like that too, he even mentioned (paraphrase)  the healthy don't need a doctor, I didn't come for the righteous but for the sinners.   so where ever it was sung is good, even at the bars

OM45GE - Posted - 10/17/2015:  08:19:26

I play several religious tunes - This Little Light, Will The Circle Be Unbroken?, In Christ There Is No East Or West, Great Dream From Heaven in any setting I'm playing in. They usually go over pretty well.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/17/2015:  13:52:17

I remember John Fahey's "I C T I N E or W". Nice tune.

dmiller - Posted - 10/17/2015:  14:20:20

Back in the mid to late 80's the group I was in then was playing at a Folk festival over across Lake Superior in Ashland Wisconsin.  I had never heard Sweet Dream until just the week before (on the Prairie Home Show), and it was Phil Heywood who did it.  As luck would have it - - he was at the same festival we were at the next week.  Bunch of us all hanging out back stage, and Phil was wondering what to do for an encore?  I suggested Great Dream, and he went with it.  Over all these years, I never got the grasp of finger picking on the guitar, but it was a treat to hear and see him pick it live.

That's a real nice version of a great tune.

DeanT - Posted - 10/17/2015:  22:10:43

We play "Put your Hand in the hand" Every 5th song we do is either gospel or hymn

OM45GE - Posted - 10/18/2015:  18:13:16

I don't do that many. And a lot of the ones I do are finger style guitar instrumentals.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/18/2015:  19:17:43

I play "Shall We Gather at the River" fingerpicking and changed the rhythm to swing/syncopation. Maybe I'll put it on YouTube this winter when I'm off work (for 11months,Daniel...lol).

DeanT - Posted - 10/18/2015:  22:05:31

Another great song! We do it from time to time also. Just added Church in the Wildwood for next month's set

OM45GE - Posted - 10/19/2015:  05:43:05

We had more snow than that Chuck.

DeanT - Posted - 10/19/2015:  16:41:54

OM45GE - Posted - 10/19/2015:  17:49:04

One of the ski areas in Maine opened this week. Just a couple of runs on man made snow but still.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/19/2015:  17:59:23

I drove through wet snow flurries near Montreal yesterday

DeanT - Posted - 10/19/2015:  19:18:48

I've still never snow skied

dat - Posted - 10/20/2015:  05:48:14

it's 51 here now this morning, we might get some ice sometime this winter, but snow doesn't come often

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/20/2015:  07:28:58

I don't ski- went twice years ago- but always skated and played hockey. I still like to get the blades on a couple of times every winter and whip around the ice.

dat - Posted - 10/20/2015:  07:52:47

I would be sitting on the ice more than whipping around on it

Hankon5 - Posted - 10/20/2015:  15:12:09

I snow skied on several mountains....it is awesome on top and looking miles away. nothing but powder looking down with pine trees on each side....WOW! Tooo old and creaky now   !sad Dean your in good shape to do this..You would NEVER regret ir!

OM45GE - Posted - 10/20/2015:  15:35:11

You said it Hank. It's so beautiful up in the mountains and the feeling of gliding down the slopes is indescribable.

DeanT - Posted - 10/20/2015:  16:24:53

I've skates a lot, and water skied... never snow skied... but can't afford it with all my bike and running stuff!

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/20/2015:  19:08:11

When/if I retire I'm gonna take up skiing, tennis, golf, fly fishing, dobro, and RV'ing. (maybe). 😁

DeanT - Posted - 10/20/2015:  21:56:16

That's why I bike and run!

dat - Posted - 10/21/2015:  05:56:13

when I retire, I'll be to old to ski, well unless they have a wheelchair ski set

dmiller - Posted - 10/21/2015:  08:02:27

I've tried water-skiing and downhill-skiing just once (each).  The muscles in my legs "hurt like hell" after trying to water-ski.  I never knew it was such work to get afloat behind the boat!.  We've got several snow ski hills around here and 25 or so years ago one of them had a "free' night so I went with some friends.  One other lady there had never done downhill skiing either, so both of us got taken over to the "Bunny Hill" where they teach little kids how to ski.

I've done plenty of X-C skiing, but it took a lot to get used to those rigid boots used for downhill.  Our friends finally took the two of us off of the Bunny Hill and out onto the real slope.  It was a nightmare.  I was trying my best to go slow so I wouldn't crash, and here were all these kids hot dogging it down the hill cutting in front of me, flying left and right with no regard for newbies (me).  I'll stick with skiing on a trail through the woods, even though I don't do that that much anymore either (these days)

OM45GE - Posted - 10/21/2015:  08:18:06

I think it's pretty mean and dangerous for an accomplished skier to take a novice on a slope beyond their ability. When you know how to control your skis it' exhilarating to be on the slopes. If you don't, it is indeed terrifying - and dangerous for both the novice and others sharing the slopes.

dmiller - Posted - 10/21/2015:  08:32:54

awhhhhhh - - - It was no big deal (for me and Sue - - the two "newbies").  We both agreed to give it a try that night, and the friends of ours that invited us INSISTED that we all went to the bunny hill first so that we knew the basics.  We were allowed off of the bunny hill ONLY after they were convinced that we knew how to "snowplow" correctly to retard our speed.  But - - having said that, I can easily agree with your statement too.
