Dean,you should've been an Eskimo..... :-)

OM45GE - Posted - 10/03/2014:  12:04:41

Don't they do an arctic circle marathon? He should do it.

dat - Posted - 10/03/2014:  13:32:18

Ya'll know how to catch a polar bear?    you cut a hole in the ice then put a few green peas around the hole, when the bear comes up to take a pea, you kick him in the icehole

DeanT - Posted - 10/03/2014:  15:42:53

My wife hates cold, so I'm trapped in sweat-box Kansas

OM45GE - Posted - 10/03/2014:  19:15:57

And not much snow.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/03/2014:  19:34:17

Snowfalls are good for hiding dogpoo, but spring thaws tell the ugly tale

DeanT - Posted - 10/03/2014:  23:26:42

especially if you throw it over the fence all winter....

OM45GE - Posted - 10/04/2014:  06:47:31

It's always interesting to see what the melting snows reveal.

DeanT - Posted - 10/04/2014:  07:23:17

Mostly mud!

OM45GE - Posted - 10/04/2014:  08:01:46

Early spring isn't very pretty around her. It's not bad later when things start budding out.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/04/2014:  09:15:37

It's not pretty, but those first mild sunny days with the snow still piled high feels great.

DeanT - Posted - 10/04/2014:  11:22:01

How does one convince their wife that moving to the Yukon is a good idea? I get depressed when the snow melts

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/04/2014:  12:11:03

Tell her they have the latest fashions at the Klondike Shopping Mall.

She's totally not into fashion... darn...

OM45GE - Posted - 10/06/2014:  04:21:29

Tell her you'll come visit every winter.

DeanT - Posted - 10/06/2014:  06:14:54

Who's going to foot the bill for two places? I can barely afford one!

dat - Posted - 10/06/2014:  06:51:03

and upkeep, my house is a full time repair job, two would wear me out

OM45GE - Posted - 10/06/2014:  10:13:04

Oh well, it was a thought.

DeanT - Posted - 10/06/2014:  12:48:05

I could always just build an igloo....

OM45GE - Posted - 10/06/2014:  12:57:11

I like the cold too, but I don't think I would want to live up there.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/06/2014:  13:10:50

I grew up in southern Ontario wher the winters aren't too cold. Spent many hours outside as a kid. But out here on the northern plains it gets a little "fresh",as they say. Minus 20-30 is common, for days at a time. But we do get "chinooks",warmer winds off the mountains from the west, that can raise the temperature 40 degrees in 2 hours. Those are welcome breaks in the January deep freeze.

We don't get sub zero days that often here in southern New England and that's OK with me.

DeanT - Posted - 10/06/2014:  18:34:07

In Kansas we get more zeros in our summer temps than winter temps

OM45GE - Posted - 10/07/2014:  03:10:50

It's been a while since we hit 100 too.

dat - Posted - 10/07/2014:  14:16:33

we didn't hit the 100 mark near as much this year as normal,..........   it was nice

OM45GE - Posted - 10/07/2014:  14:48:39

I bet it was nice. I had to unload a trailer load of mopeds in Houston one summer. It was hot enough in the trailer to roast a chicken and so humid it felt like you could swim in it. It put me off any notion of moving to Houston.

DeanT - Posted - 10/07/2014:  16:06:43

I think we only hit 100+ five or six times this year. That was plenty. At least that kind of heat fries the grass so it dies, so that's one good thing about it.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/07/2014:  16:19:45

You mean you don't water the lawn? ;-)

DeanT - Posted - 10/07/2014:  22:20:30

Hell no! Then it grows and you have to cut it. That's about as crazy as purposely spilling a glass of milk just so that you can clean it up. Just no sense in that.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/08/2014:  03:00:59

I don't water the lawn either. It browns up, it comes back in the spring. Less I have to mow.

dat - Posted - 10/08/2014:  06:51:49

We don't water our dirt either, grass grows well along the septic lines

DeanT - Posted - 10/08/2014:  11:44:32

Anything that does grow, get's peed on by the dogs, so that takes care of that

OM45GE - Posted - 10/08/2014:  12:15:17

A previous owner of our house put in a nice sprinkler system. I don't even know if it still works. If I need to water something, I use the hose.

DeanT - Posted - 10/08/2014:  15:30:15

Sprinklers are supposed to come on by themselves in the middle of a rain storm

OM45GE - Posted - 10/08/2014:  16:46:01

That's funny you mention that. One of my pet peeves is seeing sprinklers running in a rain storm. I don't know why it bothers me, but with so much of the country and other parts of the world in a drought, it seems wrong some how.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/08/2014:  17:18:31

I don't know if it's still on the table, but a few years ago they were thinking of pipelining water from Lake Superior to the dry southwest.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/08/2014:  17:26:19

That would be a heck of a pipeline.

DeanT - Posted - 10/08/2014:  17:37:04

They do it with oil, why not water?

OM45GE - Posted - 10/09/2014:  03:48:52

I wonder what the relative volumes are.

DeanT - Posted - 10/09/2014:  06:22:11

Could you live on the same amount of water, as the amount of gas you put in your car?

OM45GE - Posted - 10/09/2014:  06:53:30

Probably not, but I don't drive very much so I'm not a good example. Last year I put less than 3,000 miles on my car. That's only 120 gallons at 25 MPG. I did about the same miles on the motorcycle but that's only 75 gallons.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/09/2014:  07:25:45

One source says the average family uses 300 gallons of water per day. Wow- that's a lot.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/09/2014:  07:59:58

I can believe it between bathing, cooking, toilet flushes, etc.

dat - Posted - 10/09/2014:  09:27:28

We put in low water flow toilets, I wasn't sure about them to start with, but they actually still flush well with not much water.   I can see a lot of water being wasted that doesn't have to be, but it's still nice to take a shower with good water pressure

OM45GE - Posted - 10/09/2014:  09:59:48

We did the same thing, 1.28 gallons per flush.

One hard thing about drought is it's pretty much local and the fact that our reservoir is bank full doesn't help the folks in California at all because there's no way to get it there.

dat - Posted - 10/09/2014:  10:06:43

kohler?    I believe that's the same water flow on ours,  it sounds right anyway

DeanT - Posted - 10/09/2014:  10:21:52

Our toilets are still original equipment... 1947... yikes...

Our water company charges a monthly minimum. So far, in the 12 years we've owned our home, we've never reached the monthly minimum gallons of water use.

dat - Posted - 10/09/2014:  11:07:05

my bride has a small flower bed by the back porch that she waters some, but it has mostly local type plants that don't need much water, so even it doesn't get watered often

Mirabelle. I'm not sure who makes them but our plumber recommended them.

dat - Posted - 10/09/2014:  14:31:48

it's amazing to me that things that are supposed to save you money cost much more to start with.
