I was thinking that you'd be a father-in-law soon and maybe even and grandpa not long after.

Actually what I was thinking was that your daughter had a wonderful example of a loving father and husband in you and that hopefully she had that in mind when she got engaged to this guy and that I expect she'll have years of happiness ahead of her.  But that sounded kind of sappy so I won't say any of that.

get a peacock or two, they sound lovely in the evening  clown

our neighbors used to have a couple of peacocks, it was far enough through the woods that we couldn't ever hear any noise from their house or traffic going in and out, but you could hear those birds when they got wound up when the wind was blowing right

Alaina - Posted - 01/15/2013:  09:54:25

Dad used to rent a place from someone who kept peacocks on the land. They would sit on his truck, scratching it, and squawk all night. One day the guy came to check on the peacocks and noticed that they kept far away from the house and the truck. He asked dad what he did to teach them to stay away. Apparently they don't like getting doused with cold water...

I sure didn't give them much of an example there for many years, my bride put up with me through many drunken years that I should have been kicked out and not let back in, then I sobered up and met the kids, I should have been there a lot more.

he is a good kid though, they've known each other since kindergarden,

At least you saw the issue and fixed it before it was too late

OM45GE - Posted - 01/16/2013:  04:16:03

For sure

dat - Posted - 01/16/2013:  05:48:02

yeah, they had a lot more patience than they should have. they ended up being pretty good kids

OM45GE - Posted - 01/16/2013:  07:13:47

Not that I'm advocating bad parenting - or saying you were a bad parent cool, but it's amazing how much of it kids can overcome and turn out pretty well.

dat - Posted - 01/16/2013:  07:20:22

and how much God does help out and straighten folks out when they need it.  when you wake up and realize that you were a bad parent and the wife and kids still love you anyway,  you know you are blessed and there is somebody above watching over.

really if I was to grow up again and do it over, I'ld probably do the same thing again,    I learned more that way than ifin somebody had just told me

OM45GE - Posted - 01/16/2013:  07:42:58

Amen brother.

Alaina - Posted - 01/16/2013:  09:12:10

God watches out for children, drunks, and fools (my dad says this all the time)

OM45GE - Posted - 01/16/2013:  09:32:21

Is he any of the above?

dat - Posted - 01/16/2013:  09:41:12

I used to fit into all three, first time I ever drank was when I was about 7 and I got into my brother in laws grape flavored malt duck

Alaina - Posted - 01/16/2013:  09:45:46

My dad is definitely all of the above, especially since my mom refers to him as her man-child... Though he hasn't been drunk in quite a while, I'm pretty proud. And the last time he did something foolish was when he went mountain biking and broke his collar bone doing a jump. So I guess he is currently 1 for 3.

Heaven know's I've been all three once or twice, but that's because I don't like drinking to the point of getting drunk..

dat - Posted - 01/16/2013:  10:14:33

I don't anymore, never really did, it just happened, they tasted good and I kept on drinking

Alaina - Posted - 01/16/2013:  10:33:04

Well I'm glad that you overcame it! yes

dat - Posted - 01/16/2013:  12:53:56

he must be watching out for me then..........,I am sometimes a foolish drunk that behaves like a child.:-)

ErikH - Posted - 01/16/2013:  14:57:27

I'm sure it's true, because I wouldn't be around if it wasn't.

dat - Posted - 01/16/2013:  14:59:31

probably a lot more of us wouldn't be around

Alaina - Posted - 01/16/2013:  15:01:17

I like to think he has a soft spot for us

DeanT - Posted - 01/16/2013:  17:13:18

God had to pay my guardian angels triple overtime during my drinking days

mbanjo - Posted - 01/16/2013:  18:24:31

I bet you you think is was well worth it when you look back........:-)

DeanT - Posted - 01/16/2013:  19:08:50

I owe them big time

OM45GE - Posted - 01/17/2013:  05:27:38

I shudder when i look back at some of the stunts I pulled. One that comes to mind was making a 20 mile round trip in 18 minutes on twisty two-lane back roads - on a motorcycle. If someone had pulled out of a driveway or side street I would have been vaporized.

DeanT - Posted - 01/17/2013:  07:20:50

It's probably a good thing I can't remember a lot of it.surprise

dat - Posted - 01/17/2013:  07:57:55

I had fun

dat - Posted - 01/17/2013:  07:58:32

still do, but in a different way, a lot safer now

Alaina - Posted - 01/17/2013:  08:45:51

That's why they call them the Glory Days!

DeanT - Posted - 01/17/2013:  10:10:28

I wouldn't do them over again... may not survive!

Alaina - Posted - 01/17/2013:  10:11:35

Depends on if you get the same luck and results as the first time

DeanT - Posted - 01/17/2013:  10:17:57

Not to mention YouTube!

dat - Posted - 01/17/2013:  10:36:34

I had a few pictures I wasn't proud of, but nothing bad.   but I'm glad they didn't have cameras with video like now.

my senior year in high school we had two computers in the school, and they were in the library

Alaina - Posted - 01/17/2013:  11:31:09

And now people carry around a mini computer with them and call it a phone!

DeanT - Posted - 01/17/2013:  12:49:58

I remember when calculators came out. They were banned in my High School.

dat - Posted - 01/17/2013:  12:53:33

they were in our school too, we had to go to the principals office if we had a calculator in school

Alaina - Posted - 01/17/2013:  12:55:05

And now look at the world, calculators are required for various tests! It's ridiculous!

DeanT - Posted - 01/17/2013:  13:40:56

I remember standing in line at Sears to play the first pong game when it came out.

dat - Posted - 01/17/2013:  14:02:30

I remember going to the rodeo on weekends and slipping off behind the chutes and drinking beer, we didn't make it to town much.

Alaina - Posted - 01/17/2013:  14:22:09

Not going to lie, I wish I had been born into a time where that all still existed :)

DeanT - Posted - 01/17/2013:  14:38:02

No cell phones, no computers, no video games. No seat belts in the back seat. three TV channels and usually only one came in good. AM radio. Milk delivered to your front porch. Ice Cream man had a pedal bike and bells. No debit cards, and everything took 6 to 8 weeks for delivery. Rotary phones with at least 5 families on a party line. I also never remember giving my dogs heart guard or frontline, and we picked tick off by hand. We listened to mysteries on the radio on Saturday nights and it scared the crap out of us.

Alaina - Posted - 01/17/2013:  14:40:49

I bet you were also allowed to drive around with people sitting in the truck bed too, huh?

dat - Posted - 01/17/2013:  14:47:37

When you called somebody on the phone you went in the room with the phone and sat right there 'cause it was mounted to the wall, then if you weren't calling long distance you just picked up the phone and dialed the last four numbers of their number.   nothing was open on sunday and the stores that were open on saturday closed at noon

Alaina - Posted - 01/17/2013:  14:49:56

Yep, that really does sound better

ErikH - Posted - 01/17/2013:  14:53:38

It wasn't so bad.  Of course, there were alot more stay at home mothers, too, so when you did something stupid, word usually travelled faster than the time it took for you to get home, too.

Alaina - Posted - 01/17/2013:  14:55:21

Totally would have rather lived then. Life today is just too busy and complicated and techy

dat - Posted - 01/17/2013:  15:01:30

back in the 80's I told people that computers were a bad thing, that one day we would rely on them to do to much.   now after all these years, I figured out that computers are a bad thing and we do rely on them to much

Alaina - Posted - 01/17/2013:  15:07:57

I think the only reason I keep my facebook is because it helps me stay in contact with my friends all over the world. Otherwise I'd delete it

dat - Posted - 01/17/2013:  15:15:32

I e mail quite a bit instead of calling long distance, a lot of my family keeps in touch on facebook, I opened a facebook account and closed it after about 4 days.  I had people wanting to be friends on facebook that wouldn't even say hi at the grocery store.  it turned out, from what I read anyway, to be more of a gossip section than keeping in touch
