They really do rumble like a freight train

OM45GE - Posted - 09/12/2017:  08:18:24

It must be one of those things you have to experience to truly understand.

dat - Posted - 09/12/2017:  09:04:11

Better off not experiencing them, I've been lucky enough to make it through one that came close
, rumble like a freight train is pretty close, along with a jet airplane taking off at the same time

OM45GE - Posted - 09/12/2017:  10:06:56

Daniel! How are you doing?

Did you have any issues with Harvey?

DeanT - Posted - 09/12/2017:  10:24:20

We watched the 1991 McConnel AFB tornado totally level several buildings, including the bowling alley. It doesn't just blow them over, it sucks them up into the funnell.

I've seen that on videos of tornados. I can't imagine seeing it up close and personal.

dat - Posted - 09/12/2017:  12:54:08

Harvey wasn't bad here, we had rain for a week
But no winds, minor flooding but just in low spots that usually flood
With a hard rain

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/12/2017:  15:16:20

Glad to hear that.

DeanT - Posted - 09/12/2017:  15:48:29

Hey I like this new forum

OM45GE - Posted - 09/12/2017:  17:20:45

I don't like it at all. Maybe I'll get used to it, but as of now it's two thumbs down.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/12/2017:  18:45:48

It doesn't tell you who posted last

DeanT - Posted - 09/13/2017:  01:33:45

Hey I lost all my text tools...

OM45GE - Posted - 09/13/2017:  06:13:42

I can't find a way to jump directly to the last post. I have to go to the last page and scroll down.

DeanT - Posted - 09/13/2017:  10:22:53

Ok, the more I get into it, the more I don't like this new place. All the info on my home page dissapeared.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/13/2017:  10:34:22

It might take a while for Eric to tweak it. Same with the new computers in our trucks. I'm waiting for them to give me the "personal miles" option. That way it won't go against my on duty driving time,, they allow 45 minutes or 45 miles per day if bobtailing.

DeanT - Posted - 09/13/2017:  14:57:52

bobtailing? No clue...

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/13/2017:  15:01:19

Bobtail,i.e. no trailer, just tractor. The rear drive wheels bounce up and down over bumps like a bobbing tail.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/13/2017:  15:11:16

It's also from "bobbing" the tail of an animal meaning to cut it short - like the "Bobtail nag" in Camptown Races. Some animals have naturally bobbed tails like the Bob Cat.

DeanT - Posted - 09/13/2017:  17:35:46

Way cool, learned something new!

OM45GE - Posted - 09/14/2017:  03:19:49

Bobtailing is a rough ride. The truck bounces a lot without the weight of a trailer and load on the back.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/14/2017:  06:08:16

All that heavy duty suspension with no weight on it

OM45GE - Posted - 09/14/2017:  18:24:22

For a short time I drove a Mack R model that had a Mack "Camel Back" suspension. The leaves on the springs were about an inch thick. It had been built as a gravel hauler and I was hauling air freight. I swear you could feel It if you ran over used chewing gum.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/14/2017:  20:32:23

I had to look it up...wow

That's the beast. Not a lot of flexibility built into that design.

DeanT - Posted - 09/15/2017:  04:18:43

I went to the airport yesterday to pick my wife up, and passed a guy I recognized. It was slow, and quiet there, and we were at baggage claim. I caught his eye, and he could tell I had recognized him, and he gave me a look of, "thanks for recognizing me, and even more thanks for leaving it at that, and not bugging me". That was cool. He proceeded to pick up two banjos, a guitar, and what looked like a fiddle or mandolin. He was shlepping his own instruments. I was impressed. It was John McEuen, and he's in town to play the Walnut Valley music Festival this weekend.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/15/2017:  08:40:35

He was probably tired and wanted to get outta there. Most bluegrassers are pretty accessible, but I rarely know what to say to them other than the usual " I love your music kind-of-thing"

OM45GE - Posted - 09/16/2017:  05:08:36

That's cool.

DeanT - Posted - 09/16/2017:  07:10:18

There was a spot on the news last night that mentioned him, Janet Deering, and others at the festival this weekend. I'd love to go, but they priced themselves out of my league. $65 per person, $130 for my wife and I for one day. Add food and T-shirts, and it's a $200 day.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/16/2017:  11:48:04

Lots of good guitarists have won at Winfield,,,or is that a different event?

OM45GE - Posted - 09/16/2017:  12:59:01

A lot of events are getting pretty pricey.

DeanT - Posted - 09/16/2017:  15:42:43

Same event! But oh my has it changed! It's no longer the Walnut Vally Bluegrass festival. It's now the the Walnut Vally MUSIC festival. Lots of country, blues and even rock. A lot less dope and booze and braless babes, and more family, food, and mainstream vendors. And everything is priced through the roof. Nowhere near the crowds there used to be. It's gone from one of the biggest events in the area, to something that barely gets a notice on a slow news day. It wouldn't surprise me if it folded in the not to distant future.

Sounds like an opportunity for someone to resurrect the old formula.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/16/2017:  18:12:42

I think Muriel Anderson won the fingerpicking crown there years ago.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/17/2017:  04:39:42

She's won a bunch so it wouldn't surprise me if she won there too.

DeanT - Posted - 09/17/2017:  15:20:47

The old formula was dying, and the new formula revived the festival for awhile. But in this device age, who wants to go get sunburned and bug bitten to listen to their grandparents music? The world is changing.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/17/2017:  17:14:04

There is a lot of live music around here, including festivals.

DeanT - Posted - 09/17/2017:  17:37:38

I wish I could say the same, but it's pretty much dead around here. You have to look to find the live music, and it's just small stuff.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/17/2017:  17:54:29

Calgary's pretty good for folk, blues, roots, and bluegrass music.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/17/2017:  18:15:31

I've played at two different events this month and skipped several others. It's one of the reasons I'm retiring- so I'll have more time for music.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/17/2017:  20:04:36

That would be my main reason to retire soon. I miss playing,,,can't stay sharp when I'm working 12 hours a day.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/18/2017:  03:12:53

There are a lot of opportunities to play that I pass up because of work.

DeanT - Posted - 09/18/2017:  10:11:33

I still play out about 3 times a week, but we also cater to the older folks, mostly retirement communities.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/18/2017:  11:26:56

Three times a week would be great. Right now it's just hit or miss.

DeanT - Posted - 09/19/2017:  17:11:39

we actually fill our schedule a year in advance.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/19/2017:  17:50:54

That's really great. I just pick and choose right now, but there's a lot I would like to do if I didn't have to get up early and work the next day.

DeanT - Posted - 09/19/2017:  18:06:29

It does get to be almost like work sometimes. We just started our 13th year.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/19/2017:  18:09:06

Are you playing regular gigs or doing lots of places?

DeanT - Posted - 09/19/2017:  18:47:04

They are regular gigs at the same 18-20 places. I know where the ice tea machine is, at every placelaugh

It's a nice little retirement plan!
