I used to fly them in combat... man we wrecked a lot of planes...

OM45GE - Posted - 03/24/2012:  05:49:41

I hope you didn't wreck that beautiful Spitfire.

How did the combat work? I asume you didn't have miniture cannons on them.

DeanT - Posted - 03/24/2012:  09:19:36

Yep... that Spitfire was lost in battle. We tied streamers behind the planes, and tried to cut them off each other. It was a blast. There’s a National organization that holds meets, and even has a National championship. I’ve lost as many as four planes on one day doing it. Lots of mid-airs.

OM45GE - Posted - 03/26/2012:  04:11:34

Do you have any videos? That sounds like a blast, but four in one day?!? Expensive hobby.

DeanT - Posted - 03/26/2012:  06:30:32

I did it back in the 90’s and early 00, before digital video was cheap enough for the common man... so I have no video, however, I’m sure google for R/C combat would produce plenty!

dat - Posted - 03/26/2012:  12:04:50

Looks like fun, a lot of work to go into crashing though

OM45GE - Posted - 03/26/2012:  15:20:00

Exciting though.

DeanT - Posted - 03/26/2012:  15:31:24

More fun to watch... :)

OM45GE - Posted - 03/26/2012:  15:34:33

Doesn't it make it more exciting to have skin in the game?

DeanT - Posted - 03/26/2012:  15:56:52

More expensive, that’s for sure...

OM45GE - Posted - 03/27/2012:  04:10:17

I spend most of my time trying NOT to wreck things. I don't know if I could change the paradigm that radically.

dat - Posted - 03/27/2012:  06:28:36

this would be fun too

We’ve done that with paint balls :)

I love the Gnat shooting. Too cool!

dat - Posted - 03/27/2012:  09:52:11

gnat shooting would be fun, I like the charges they put on the wings for show, even though you would be able to hear and see the hits without them

OM45GE - Posted - 03/27/2012:  10:01:36

I don't know if you would hear them with six shooters firing away.

Did you notice the lack of muzzle discipline with some of them? My Dad was a shooting instructor. He would have cuffed me hard if I came close to putting a muzzle towards someone.

dat - Posted - 03/27/2012:  10:23:04

I did, most  videos with folks shooting are pretty slack.  at home or at the shooting range we are carefull

DeanT - Posted - 03/27/2012:  12:48:57

My dogs hate muzzles

dat - Posted - 03/27/2012:  13:24:52

my bride does too, not that she wears one, but she doesn't like the idea of a dog wearing one

OM45GE - Posted - 03/27/2012:  15:37:36

Toby needs a muzzle to stop all the licking. smiley

DeanT - Posted - 03/27/2012:  16:05:37

I always think they look like a dog with a catcher’s mask on...

OM45GE - Posted - 03/28/2012:  04:07:00

A lot of folks around here are using one that's just a strap around the snout. I haven't looked at them closely but I think their like a slip collar and tighten if you pull on the leash.

Those aren't intended to be a muzzle.  They are called a "gentle leader" and are supposed to work following the same concept of a halter or bridle on a horse--that a dog is going to follow it's head so if you better control the dog when walking you need to have better control of its head.  So with a horse you pull to the left to turn left, you pull to the right to turn right, you pull back to stop.  Same idea.  If the dog is charging ahead, you pull back and it limits the dog's forward motion and slows him down.  And if you want to turn and the dog is pulling in a different direction, then it helps to turn the dog's head in the direction you want to go.

It's kind of the same concept of a choke collar, only it doesn't choke the dog and it does seem to be more effective in turning/stopping them.  (How many times have you seen someone with a dog choking himself on the collar trying to get at something and not stopping no matter how hard the owner is pulling?)

But a lot of people do see something around the nose and think "oh that's a muzzle."  But it's not a muzzle and is not intended to be one and is completely ineffective if someone tries to use it as one.

DeanT - Posted - 03/28/2012:  07:46:37

We tried a nose slip collar on our male greyhound. Drove him NUTS!!! He ended up on the ground trying to rub it off

dat - Posted - 03/28/2012:  08:26:32

kinda like a nose ring, you see somebody with one of those and you wanna reach over and pull it out

OM45GE - Posted - 03/28/2012:  09:29:01

Thanks for the clarification Jennifer. Interestingly, most of the dogs I've seen them on didn't seem particularly well controlled.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/28/2012:  11:30:13

Well I do think that the dogs that people use them on are problematic to begin with, so they might still be a problem with it. And I know a lot of dogs really don't like them. My younger sister has used one with her dog but says she has to do it infrequently or else her dog just goes nuts trying to get it off.

dat - Posted - 03/28/2012:  11:56:14

a lot of times it's the owner that is the problem with that too, they'll take the dogs out and expect them to do something that they never have to do any other time.  kinda like shooting, you can't expect to never practice and be able to shoot well.  if the dogs don't get out much and aren't expected to behave at home, why would they on a leash in the park

DeanT - Posted - 03/28/2012:  12:04:17

Our male dog behaves now, just by looking at it.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/28/2012:  12:12:40

I'm unfortunately guilty of the whole "not training my dogs enough" thing. I really need to work with them both a lot more.

We had a family dog one time, it was a German shepherd/husky mix? ...Had a lovely temperament, wasn't any trouble at all, I think other animals were a little apprehensive of him, as he had an eye condition, esotropia, causing crossed eyes, he never wore a muzzle, or anything constricting.

dat - Posted - 03/28/2012:  13:49:25

so far all our dog have always been nice, one of our labs would bark and make all kinds of noise, he had a mean sounding growl, but he would wag his tail once somebody got close. no tellin what he would have done though if he needed to

DeanT - Posted - 03/28/2012:  14:01:40

Our male greyhound would eat little yappy dogs for lunch if we let him. Any dog that looks like a mop head or rodent, and he goes into kill mode. Remove the little dogs from the picture, and he’s a big sweetheart who behaves perfectly.

dat - Posted - 03/28/2012:  14:22:42

the little dogs like that need to be gotten rid of anyway

OM45GE - Posted - 03/28/2012:  15:06:19

You mean those members of the pillow family?

DeanT - Posted - 03/28/2012:  16:53:47

I really liked the Chihuahua movie...

Isn’t there a part II?

dat - Posted - 03/29/2012:  12:39:43

could be like Rocky and have a part 37

DeanT - Posted - 03/29/2012:  13:58:56

How many stories can you make up about a little dog?

OM45GE - Posted - 03/30/2012:  04:14:23

I've never been much of a fan of tiny dogs. We dog sit a Chihuahua every now and then. Pookie (yes really) is OK but I don't really get it.

dat - Posted - 03/30/2012:  06:44:18

I like a full sized dog with a full nose, our oldest girl has a boston terrier, small flat nosed ugly as all get out, but she thinks it's cute.  I never have taken the dog hunting, but if it would bark it would make a pretty good squirrel dog

DeanT - Posted - 03/30/2012:  08:05:06

A 50 pound bag of dog food would last 5 or 6 years

dat - Posted - 03/30/2012:  10:43:04

yeah, instead of a week or so

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/30/2012:  11:13:37

Small dogs have smaller poops, too.

I have to admit I definitely appreciate saving money on dog food and not having to clean up as much as I used to.

I'm not excited by small dogs but the larger of my two is around 40 pounds and I'm pretty comfortable with that size. I suspect I'll stick with dogs around her size for future.

dat - Posted - 03/30/2012:  11:17:17

a 40 lb dog can still fetch a duck

DeanT - Posted - 03/30/2012:  12:04:17

A 40 pound dog can also fetch a 4 pound dog :)

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/30/2012:  12:50:34

I have a dog book that basically says if you want a pet that small get a hamster.
