It just blows my mind that all those people would scram, KNOWING the old folks were left behind.

OM45GE - Posted - 08/28/2017:  19:48:13

It's so wrong.

DeanT - Posted - 08/29/2017:  06:25:51

According to a followup, after that photo hit face book, they were rescued.

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/29/2017:  07:27:11

I heard others are using social media to get rescued

OM45GE - Posted - 08/29/2017:  13:11:10

Mother Nature sure has a way of showing us who's in charge.

DeanT - Posted - 08/29/2017:  14:13:18

What blows me away, is folks who go right back and rebuild. I'm sorry, but I'd cut my losses, head inland, and never look back

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/29/2017:  16:04:25

I've moved quite often, but I guess some people hate leaving where they grew up

DeanT - Posted - 08/29/2017:  17:21:26

I couldn't wait to get away!

OM45GE - Posted - 08/29/2017:  18:39:34

I left as soon as possible too but I've ended up half an hour from where I grew up.

DeanT - Posted - 08/30/2017:  01:38:50

I left Michigan, and ended up in Kansas

OM45GE - Posted - 08/30/2017:  02:45:54

I don't think I'll be making any more big moves. I like it here.

DeanT - Posted - 08/30/2017:  11:20:02

Same here!

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/30/2017:  11:50:32

I've been out west here for 10 years and it still doesn't really feel like home yet, probably cuz I'm only in town about 45 days a year. I spend winters in Arizona, the rest of the time I'm on the road.

OM45GE - Posted - 08/30/2017:  14:01:27

Does the road feel like home?

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/30/2017:  14:19:28

Oh yeah...it's freedom from normal bs , kind of like leaving your cares behind. And of course the feeling of movement and changing landscapes. I get home for a few days, like now, and I have all kinds of errands and other issues to catch up on. But I get to see family and friends, and jam sessions.
I was in Victoriaville ,Quebec last week, the home of hockey sticks that I used ,and even the great no. 4 Orr.

DeanT - Posted - 08/30/2017:  14:41:45

Didn't Bobby Orr make a comeback way late in life?

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/30/2017:  14:46:15

Not really..he was traded to the Blackhawks and tried to play a few games with them, but his knees were done. I've heard that his first knee surgery was messed up and it aggravated the problem. Nowadays it would have been fixed and he could have had a long career.

That old pic of him with the Oshawa Generals is how I remember him when he played in the OHL Jr. A league against my hometown St. Catharines Blackhawks.

That's a messed up knee! It was Gordie Howe coming back at 50 that I was thinking about

OM45GE - Posted - 08/30/2017:  18:44:16

Yes, Gordie came out of retirement to play with his sons in the World Hockey Association. He was in his 40's.

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/31/2017:  06:57:29

How about Satchel Paige who pitched 3+ innings for the A's when he was 59 years old, allowing no runs.

Thereby giving hope to lots of aging would be ballplayers.

DeanT - Posted - 08/31/2017:  13:12:48

I pitched in high school, I couldn't even imagine trying that now!

OM45GE - Posted - 08/31/2017:  18:21:48

After two torn rotator cuffs, it's not even remotely a possibility for me.

DeanT - Posted - 08/31/2017:  19:02:25

I tried throwing a snowball a couple years ago... ouch!!!

chuckv97 - Posted - 08/31/2017:  19:07:22

My right shoulder is screwed from hockey. If I even throw a stone into a lake it'll hurt for a day or more.

DeanT - Posted - 09/01/2017:  01:38:53

and yet I can swim for miles

OM45GE - Posted - 09/01/2017:  03:08:46

I tried to throw a tennis ball back into the local tennis courts I was about 20' away and fell short. ☹️

DeanT - Posted - 09/01/2017:  11:08:01

I've done that trying to throw golf balls back to golfers...

OM45GE - Posted - 09/03/2017:  16:40:11

The kids on the courts looked at me like I was sooooo lame.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/03/2017:  18:53:40

Getting old's not for sissies

DeanT - Posted - 09/04/2017:  14:52:07

Those sore mornings are getting tougher all the time

OM45GE - Posted - 09/04/2017:  15:12:46

I like the senior discount on my skiing seasons pass. It's about half price.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/04/2017:  15:50:33

I applied for my other gov't pension last week. It should come through in early December.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/05/2017:  02:53:00

Are you planning to retire soon?

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/05/2017:  05:55:20

Not really,, maybe go to 6 months work next year. Just covering my butt in case I have to suddenly quit...you never know at this age, although I'm still healthy and still enjoy driving. I'm already getting my Old Age Pension, the other pension is the one we pay into every paycheque, and I also have a few scheckels in a personal retirement savings plan.

DeanT - Posted - 09/05/2017:  06:37:52

I'm getting my militry pension, but I also put into a retirement accout, that matures in 3 1/2 years... then we have lots of options

flake - Posted - 09/05/2017:  08:26:19

I got a check last year from a movie I did. It's all been downhill from there. 😲

OM45GE - Posted - 09/05/2017:  17:33:22

My lovely bride moved from Kissimee Florida to Kansas. She said tornadoes are easier to live with than hurricanes

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/07/2017:  06:56:11

I heard a guy from Oklahoma say that too, on the radio yesterday

OM45GE - Posted - 09/07/2017:  08:47:53

I heard on the news this morning that they were expecting 15 to 20 foot storm surges hitting islands where the high point is about 20 feet above sea level.

DeanT - Posted - 09/07/2017:  11:02:34

tornadoes are done in 20 minutes, and the odds of getting hit are very small. Hurricanes last for days and destroy everything

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/07/2017:  20:03:04

So far, I haven't encountered either one

OM45GE - Posted - 09/08/2017:  02:49:13

I've been through several hurricanes, once in the Caribbean and others on the mainland. Nothing on the scale of Harvey or Irma.

DeanT - Posted - 09/08/2017:  04:17:06

In 37 years in Kansas, I've seen two tornadoes

OM45GE - Posted - 09/08/2017:  10:31:33

I've seen hundreds, but they've all been on TV or in the movies.

DeanT - Posted - 09/08/2017:  11:04:03

You've probably seen the 1991 tornado that tore up McConnell AFB, on TV. I was on duty that day, and got to see it up close and personal.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/11/2017:  02:43:35

Was it frightening?

DeanT - Posted - 09/11/2017:  10:13:44

not really, it was hypnotic, we didn't know weather to run or watch. We watched and got lucky.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/11/2017:  17:33:59

I was broken down in a truck stop in Nebraska once and was working on the truck in the parking lot. A tornado went by fairly far away. It was dark out so I couldn't actually see the tornado, just a lot of lightning.
