The Boston Marathon is in a couple of weeks. A few of my neighbors run it every year. They've had a tough time training because of all the snow. It's cleared up a lot in the past week so everyone is out putting in the miles.

DeanT - Posted - 03/30/2018:  10:01:02

A lot of folks do treadmills (I hate them!) if the weather is really bad, I'll run on the indoor track at the AF base

OM45GE - Posted - 03/30/2018:  11:35:15

I never liked treadmill running. I used to run in any weather. Now I do my walks no matter what. I just vary my routes depending on what roads are safe enough.

DeanT - Posted - 03/30/2018:  14:12:06

Now I DO ride my bike on rollers indoors, and I also have a stationary bike for training. Great for watching movies and staying in shape.

OM45GE - Posted - 03/31/2018:  05:48:46

The company I just retired from installed several treadmill work stations. You plugged your laptop into the system and walked while you worked. They were set to a pretty slow pace so you didn't work up a sweat but you could still burn some calories. They didn't get much use and were taken out a few months later.

DeanT - Posted - 03/31/2018:  06:34:20

I would have used them!

chuckv97 - Posted - 03/31/2018:  13:20:23

Some of the T/A truck stops installed exercise rooms with equipment a few years ago. I rarely see anyone in them though. I’d rather walk or jog outside, and do some stretches.

OM45GE - Posted - 03/31/2018:  14:45:39

I don't mind using weight machines but, like you, prefer to be outside.

DeanT - Posted - 04/01/2018:  08:27:14

I use the weight machines at the gym on the AF base a LOT!

OM45GE - Posted - 04/02/2018:  12:54:26

A town I used to live in had a great 10K running trail. There were workout stations with exercise stations (pull-up bars, sit-up benches, etc. along the route. You could do shorter loops, but I used to love running the whole thing.

DeanT - Posted - 04/02/2018:  14:07:17

we have a 2 mile course like that at the base

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/02/2018:  14:14:38

There’s one in Yuma like that - about a quarter mile

OM45GE - Posted - 04/02/2018:  16:11:35

I used to do trail running in the mountains, but my ankles and knees can't take that abuse any more.

DeanT - Posted - 04/02/2018:  17:14:02

I did trail ultras for 2 years... no more. Plantar Fasciitis from hell.

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/02/2018:  17:20:21

What exactly is that anyway...plantar fasciitis?

OM45GE - Posted - 04/03/2018:  05:33:21

The plantar fascia connects your heel to your toes and helps maintain the arch of your foot. If it becomes inflamed it hurts like hell and is very difficult to treat. People with flat feet/fallen arches are prone to it as are runners and anyone who spends a lot of time on their feet. It's also a side effect of obesity that can make it hard for folks to exercise.

Like Dean, I developed plantar fasciitis and it was a nightmare. I couldn't walk without severe pain. I use orthotics in all my shoes (even ski boots) now and don't walk barefoot very much.

DeanT - Posted - 04/03/2018:  07:08:44

I still wear a night boot

OM45GE - Posted - 04/03/2018:  07:12:20

I never used on of those. Does it help?

DeanT - Posted - 04/03/2018:  09:35:58

YES! It's helped more than all the other stuff put together

OM45GE - Posted - 04/03/2018:  12:25:34

I'll remember that if mine ever comes back.

DeanT - Posted - 04/04/2018:  10:15:15

no limping to the bathroom when I get up in the morning

OM45GE - Posted - 04/04/2018:  11:00:45

The orthotics did it for me.

DeanT - Posted - 04/06/2018:  06:47:44

Marathon tomorrow morning in Abilene Kansas...

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/06/2018:  06:55:58

Good luck, Dean. Hope you do well.

dat - Posted - 04/06/2018:  07:51:39

I ran to the bathroom the other day when I got home, but my work outs are usually at a slower pace.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/06/2018:  09:54:20

Hey Daniel. How's it going?

dat - Posted - 04/06/2018:  12:18:17

Going great, I woke up breathing this morning

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/06/2018:  12:32:27

That’s a good sign, Daniel. Glad you checked up on us.

OM45GE - Posted - 04/06/2018:  13:40:13

OM45GE - Posted - 04/16/2018:  08:38:25

They're running the Boston Marathon in a heavy rain driven by gale force headwinds.

DeanT - Posted - 04/16/2018:  08:59:06

I'm watching it now... Go Desiree!!!!

OM45GE - Posted - 04/16/2018:  16:09:38

She did it! First American woman winner in 33 years.

DeanT - Posted - 04/17/2018:  05:12:28

Best Boston ever!

chuckv97 - Posted - 04/17/2018:  05:46:29

Wow,,,some kind of weather to run in

OM45GE - Posted - 04/17/2018:  05:55:26

A lot of the runners were saying they liked the weather and certainly preferred it to hot and humid.

One woman runner was a cancer survivor and had to drop out at mile 15 for medical attention. She went home for a couple of hours and came back to finish the run. She crossed the finish line at 1:30 this morning.

DeanT - Posted - 04/17/2018:  14:18:40

The stories are amazing! The Japanese guy who won was really awesome... I've always wanted a no-name underdog to do that! And YES on the weather, MUCH better running in rain and 38 degrees, than anything over 80 degrees!

OM45GE - Posted - 04/18/2018:  12:50:49

I used to work a national yogurt company. One year we parked a tractor trailer at the finish line and gave out frozen yogurt to the runners. None of my drivers wanted to do the gig so I drove the truck in. I had to be there by 6:00 AM before they shut down the streets. We couldn't leave until after 6:00 PM when they opened the side streets again.

Several of my customer service reps and a couple of sales people came in and gave out the yogurt. It was a fabulous time.

DeanT - Posted - 04/18/2018:  13:58:08

That would have been a blast! And a LOT of yogurt!!!

OM45GE - Posted - 04/19/2018:  07:55:34

It was a lot of yogurt. The runners ate about 2/3 of it. When they started letting civilians in the finish line area we let them have some too. The only thing we brought back were the pallets.

DeanT - Posted - 04/19/2018:  13:32:06

Funny you mention that about the civilians... we've noticed lately that the bums and homeless folks have figured out the race freebees... and we see them quit often at the finish lines...

OM45GE - Posted - 04/20/2018:  13:10:41

I certainly wouldn't begrudge them a cup of yogurt. There but for fortune go I and all that.

DeanT - Posted - 04/20/2018:  18:00:13

I've been giving all my old running shoes to the homeless folks

OM45GE - Posted - 04/20/2018:  19:57:28

One of my ongoing retirement projects is cleaning out stuff and donating a lot of it to local charities.

DeanT - Posted - 04/21/2018:  02:15:41

We've been doing a lot of that too, amazing the stuff you accumulate over the years

OM45GE - Posted - 04/21/2018:  10:24:53

It's a little overwhelming. My mother and father-in-law moved into assisted living a year ago and I helped clean out their house so it could be sold. It was a HUGE project and I vowed I wouldn't put my son through that. I've been chipping away at it, but I have to focus on one small area at a time or I would go nuts. We're not hoarders by any stretch of the imagination, but we do have a lot of stuff.
