This stuff makes people crazy...they kiss a cod,,part of the tradition

DeanT - Posted - 10/29/2016:  17:01:14

that would make me quit drinking right there...

OM45GE - Posted - 10/29/2016:  17:07:09

What the hell is she doing?

Forrest - Posted - 10/29/2016:  20:11:34

Is she kissing a giant pepper?  Tooting a tuber?

OM45GE - Posted - 10/29/2016:  20:45:33

I'm not making fun of her hobbies, but that looks weird.

Saturday night we headed to Christian’s on George St. There is a ritual in Newfoundland, called a “Screech In”, which enables someone from away to become an official honourary Newfoundlander. They do screech ins at Christian’s every night, and C and some of his friends were heading there to get someone screeched in. Since I was there… did I want to do it as well? Bah, why not!

Short version of the ritual is basically this: you are taught a silly phrase, you kiss a cod fish (in this case a frozen one…), and you drink a shot of screech (Jamaican rum). We also sang a song, were taught some Newfoundland words, and ate some bologna.

-- so that's the rest of the story....go figure

Like I said, I'm not making fun of anyone's hobbies.

Looks like that's much the same as the  Eelpout Festival  that Craig Evans (Frailin) talks about here on the BHO.

Talking about the moonshine - - -  Back in the mid 1970's at Bean Blossom I was at a jam where  Kenny Baker was, and he asked a couple of us to do a moonshine run (he called it "that other thing we were speaking of") for him.    Long story short - - the stuff we went to get for him was from a private stash (owned by a friend in the area) that had aged for a long time.  It was a dark color (not clear) from the years of aging, and was smoother than anything I'd ever drank before.   My one "shine" experience was a good un.  approve

Forrest - Posted - 10/30/2016:  06:23:33

Living in NC, I've had my experiences with 'shine over the years. My grandfather used to keep a gallon pickle jar of it in his wood shop refrigerator for years. It seemed to rotate between clear and having peaches or apples in it over time.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/30/2016:  07:28:24

We've got moonshiners up here too.

Forrest - Posted - 10/30/2016:  10:26:18

I'm not at all surprised.  I know folks that swear by moonshine and that's their hooch of choice.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/30/2016:  11:00:09

I'll leave them to it.

Forrest - Posted - 10/30/2016:  11:01:11

You and me both.  I have no interest in the stuff beyond using it as a cleaner.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/30/2016:  11:05:15

I wonder if it would work in an alcohol stove.

Forrest - Posted - 10/30/2016:  11:06:24

I'm sure.  It's nearly 100% ethanol in some cases.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/30/2016:  11:54:07

Sure didn't hurt Kenny Baker's fiddling

OM45GE - Posted - 10/30/2016:  14:04:12

How about his liver?

dmiller - Posted - 10/30/2016:  14:59:58

Monroe was a teetotaler, but he "overlooked" Kenny's drinking.

Kenny died in 2011 at age 85, but I don't think alcohol was the cause.

Kenny either quit (or was fired) from the Bluegrass Boys more than other picker.  He quit Monroe for the last time around 1984, over an argument about Jerusalem Ridge being a fiddle tune or a mandolin tune.  I was at a fiddle workshop in Minneapolis that Kenny was doing at the Homestead Picking Parlor before being on the Prairie Home Companion show  that same evening- - and he told us there at the workshop the story about leaving Monroe for the last and final time.

They were playing some festival somewhere, and Bill wanted Kenny to solo the tune (Jerusalem Ridge) alone, with no mandolin break.  Kenny said that it was a mandolin tune - - so it needed a mando break in it.  Bill said  - - No, it is a fiddle  tune, so no mando was needed.  Kenny said if you don't play a mandolin solo here, I'm finished with you. Bill said "Fine".  So when the tune was played there on that stage - - Bill never did play a mandolin solo on it, letting Kenny do "all the work".  When that set was over, Kenny put his fiddle in his case and walked away from Bill for good right then and there in the middle of the festival, never to return.

Thats a true story, told by Kenny himself.

I admire people that do what they say they're going to do, no matter how difficult.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/30/2016:  19:22:11

Monroe, for all his musical genius, was a difficult personality. His feud with Gibson was interesting....

Forrest - Posted - 10/30/2016:  19:22:59

Monroe was by all accounts a complex individual.

Back when I was driving trucks in the 1980's, I was at a truck stop in the middle of the night. There was a tour but getting some repairs. It was the Ramones. I asked the drivers if they were wild on tour and he said no, they were great guys. I asked who was the worst band he ever drove around and he immediately said the Bluegrass Boys.

Forrest - Posted - 10/31/2016:  06:46:08

Ha!  I wonder why?

OM45GE - Posted - 10/31/2016:  08:11:28

He had a lot of stories but basically said they were hard partying and fought a lot. He told one story about an fight they got into way out in the middle of nowhere and one of the band members made him stop the bus, got off with his luggage and instruments and started walking. I guess they were a long way out of anyplace but Bill had him drive off and leave him.

DeanT - Posted - 10/31/2016:  10:23:18

I should feel fortunate, I've never had any trouble with band members

OM45GE - Posted - 10/31/2016:  10:27:14

I never had anything other than arguments about music and those weren't really anything.

dmiller - Posted - 11/01/2016:  00:49:56

I got kicked out of the last band I was in (maybe 20 years ago?) because I refused to play the song "Friend of the Devil".  They said "It's harmless, and has a catchy melody". I told them I found the title to be offensive, but they didn't see it the same way as I did.

OM45GE - Posted - 11/01/2016:  02:55:57

I have stopped going to certain jams because some of the participants were jerks.

DeanT - Posted - 11/01/2016:  04:29:05

we play Elvis's "Devil in Disguise"

OM45GE - Posted - 11/01/2016:  05:30:59

Good tune.

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/01/2016:  05:52:50

I play in jams where there's the occasional jerk,,but they're outnumbered by mostly good folks

OM45GE - Posted - 11/01/2016:  06:53:51

There's a great jam/open mike session I go to They sometimes do a song circle where folks take turns introducing a song and anyone who wants can take a solo. There's one fiddle player who thinks he's better than he is and takes songs over, increasing the temp, changing the progression, etc. He's really aggressive about it and I don't like playing with him so I don't stay if he's there.

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/01/2016:  08:24:01

Some folks need their strings cut
