There's an idea.

Another time we were out on my buddy's 30 footer for an overnight sail. There were supposed to be 15 to 20 knot winds, which would have been exciting but safe. Instead it kicked up to a full gale with waves over twenty feet. The forestay  holding the job blew out and the jib was trailing beside the boat and fouling both the rudder and the propeller. I had to go forward and unshackle the jib at the bow. We would crest a wave and then bury the bow (and me!) under the next wave. I had to hold onto the bow rails and hold my breath until we came up again. It took me about fifteen minutes but it seemed like hours. Without the jib we couldn't point into the wind enough to get back to port easily so it took us about ten hours of pounding through the waves. Lots of fun. No cameras then either.

I would have been throwing up at the same time! I went on a nice calm whale boat tour off the coast of Maine... and well, spent much of the time leaning over the back of the boat. Me and boats don't mix well.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/23/2014:  06:21:11

I don't know why boats don't bother me. I can't do things like roller coaster or spinning carnival rides at all, but I'm fine on a boat even in rough conditions.

dat - Posted - 10/23/2014:  07:58:54

a buddy of mine was a helicopter driver in the Army, he was scared of heights so bad that he would start sweating if he was on a 6 ft ladder, but flying he said was a whole different feeling

OM45GE - Posted - 10/23/2014:  11:03:30

The mind works in funny ways doesn't it?

DeanT - Posted - 10/23/2014:  12:20:01

I don't do amusement rides or flying well at all either. I worked on airplanes my whole career and HATED check rides. When I got pulled for an F-16, and B-1b rides, I gave them up to a co-workers.

dat - Posted - 10/23/2014:  13:58:35

they stopped the farris wheel once so my bride could get off of it, she doesn't like heights either

OM45GE - Posted - 10/23/2014:  14:47:10

I used to do technical rock climbing, ropes, safety equipment and all that. I had no problem climbing a big wall and was fine at the top, but if I drove or hiked to the top and walked to the edge, it gave me the willies.

DeanT - Posted - 10/23/2014:  16:12:49

Heck I freak just cleaning my gutters

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/23/2014:  21:44:35

I don't mind heights, or carny rides, but I get car sick and sea sick. I'm OK if I do the driving, but I can't read a book if I'm a passenger. I have to keep looking up - my daughter is the same,,sea sick and car sick. I used to study for an exam on the schoolbus in high school- by the time we got there I'd be sick for 20 minutes before I could go write the doggone exam.

DeanT - Posted - 10/23/2014:  22:26:53

If I fall asleep as a passenger, I wake up pretty sick... usually with a monster headache for a bonus

OM45GE - Posted - 10/24/2014:  03:02:18

I can sleep in cars OK. My passengers don't like it though.

dat - Posted - 10/24/2014:  10:36:26

I don't sleep well in cars, I guess just knowing I'm not driving.  but when I get tired driving I can ride as a passenger with my bride driving and I'm wide awake pretty soon.  nothing against her driving, I just don't sleep well in a car,  well unless I'm driving, then I get sleepy enough to scare me enough to pull over

OM45GE - Posted - 10/24/2014:  11:34:58

I'm the same except that I've learned to do it.

DeanT - Posted - 10/24/2014:  11:49:57

we pull over and both go to sleep...

OM45GE - Posted - 10/24/2014:  14:20:54

When we drive out to The Bonneville Salt Flats, we just swap seats and keep on trucking. I won't pretend it's quality sleep but it's enough to keep me going.

dat - Posted - 10/25/2014:  10:59:58

I was just lookin at the map,  it's only 23 hours driving to the salt flats from here,   reminds me of when I drove up to Penn. for my brothers wedding, 25 hour drive just stopping long enough for gas.   I was a lot younger then,  I'ld have to make 3 days of it now just getting there

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/25/2014:  12:51:24

Heard an old time trucker on the CB a while back saying he used to run back from Frisco to his house in Pittsburgh straight through in 52 hours.

I was in southern Indiana last week visiting family.

Temps were in the low 70's all week long.  Got back

to Minnesota and we're lucky to hit 50° for a high.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/27/2014:  10:45:18

Did you stop by at Bean Blossom to feel the old vibes?

dmiller - Posted - 10/27/2014:  11:11:52

No - - this trip I didn't although I was about a mile or so away from it while house hunting.  I'm going to move back there to Indiana (soon I hope) and one house I looked at was so close to Bean Blossom that you probably could've thrown a rock and it would've landed there at the Jamboree Campground!

I did find one house with a couple of out buildings on 2 1/2 acres of land that I really like and it is just 10 or so miles from Bean Blossom. I've got a realtor working on it and it'll be good to be back home in Indiana.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/27/2014:  11:18:57

"back home in Indiana" ? There's a song in there somewhere........😉

Great clip, I didn't realize Jim Neighbors was still around!

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/27/2014:  12:25:42

Still has the big voice. My Dad used to like his singing.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/28/2014:  10:06:50

I liked him on The Jackie Gleason Show. He played such a rube and then would belt out a magnificent tune.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/30/2014:  13:39:34

Can't remember those old Gleason shows. Just remember him from Andy Griffith and Gomer Pyle. We didn't have TV until I was 13.

DeanT - Posted - 10/30/2014:  15:29:25

We got our first TV in 1965. Ed Sullivan was big then.

OM45GE - Posted - 10/31/2014:  12:53:30

We got our first in the 50's but I don't remember the year. That was before the development of electricity so we had to watch the TV by candlelight.

DeanT - Posted - 10/31/2014:  15:43:38

Our old house still had gas lamp lines sticking out of the wall, and a coal chute in the basement.

chuckv97 - Posted - 10/31/2014:  18:00:41

The first house I remember had 2 wood/ coal stoves. The next one had a coal furnace, with the coal bin in the basement.

DeanT - Posted - 10/31/2014:  23:10:03

we also still got milk from the milkman, and our phone was on a party line with the neighbors

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/01/2014:  20:00:26

We had a bread man,and a milk man with a horse-pulled wagon. Also an iceman, who used to tromp through the kitchen with a big block of ice for the ice box - no refrigerator.

DeanT - Posted - 11/01/2014:  20:00:30

I've always had a refrigerator! But I didn't have AC until after I left home.

OM45GE - Posted - 11/03/2014:  05:34:03

My previous house was built in the 1880's and still had gas lines for gas lights running through the walls. They had all been capped off and covered. Imagine my surprise when I cut back the wall to move a light switch and cut into a gas line.

DeanT - Posted - 11/03/2014:  05:43:01

A I hope it wasn't a live line!

OM45GE - Posted - 11/03/2014:  05:47:27

Do, they were all disconnected. They had also run some of the water downspouts through interior walls. I found that out a couple of weeks after I hung a picture. We had a rainstorm and water started seeping out around the picture hanger. I had pierced the downspout.

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/03/2014:  09:45:12

is there an old dumb waiter too?

OM45GE - Posted - 11/03/2014:  09:56:15

No, that house didn't have one.

OM45GE - Posted - 11/03/2014:  09:56:31

Does a dumb owner count?

DeanT - Posted - 11/03/2014:  10:06:05

My house still has fabric covered wires and plaster walls, not going to be fun when wires get replaced...

dat - Posted - 11/03/2014:  13:24:45

ya'll talkin about old stuff,  I just got word that I'll be a grand paw this evening or in the morning,

OM45GE - Posted - 11/03/2014:  13:41:53
