I'll probably never try, too old to break bones

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/09/2016:  05:51:39

Too proud to take lessons.... 😤 🤕

DeanT - Posted - 11/09/2016:  06:06:11

There used to be an indoor ski shop here, with a ski slope treadmill for lessons... it was pretty cool.

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/09/2016:  06:10:05

Skiing in Kansas? Wow.,cool.  Where are the nearest ski hills?

Mount Sunflower is at an elevation of over 4,000 feet but it's only 19 feet above the surrounding land. It's also adjacent to the lowest point in Colorado, which is probably where the closest ski resorts are.

DeanT - Posted - 11/09/2016:  10:14:20

closest hills to Kansas are Colorado...

OM45GE - Posted - 11/09/2016:  15:05:01

Some incredible skiing in Colorado.

Kansas and Oklahoma are getting to be known for our earthquakes lately

OM45GE - Posted - 11/09/2016:  18:45:35

Yeah, that recent one in OK was pretty big.

DeanT - Posted - 11/09/2016:  19:22:46

we felt it in Kansas

OM45GE - Posted - 11/10/2016:  16:34:53

We get them occasionally up here. One time my wife and I were out with another couple. We stopped for gas and I was outside filling the car when the ground started shaking. They thought I was shaking the car and started yelling at me to stop. I stepped back and held my arms out and they realized what was happening.

dmiller - Posted - 11/10/2016:  23:58:22

I've never been through an earthquake.  Been close to a coupla three tornados over the years, and that was bad enough.

OM45GE - Posted - 11/11/2016:  03:19:31

I can't really call what we had an earthquake, more like a tremor. Mother Nature sure has some scary things she can throw at us.

DeanT - Posted - 11/11/2016:  06:57:40

we are getting them every few weeks now, it's become no big deal. Don't mind the little ones. Rather have the earth blow off a little steam regularly, than let it build up for a big one.

OM45GE - Posted - 11/11/2016:  12:36:43

That's pretty much how it seems to work isn't it?

DeanT - Posted - 11/11/2016:  16:02:50

I hope so!

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/11/2016:  16:15:58

Are they caused from fracking?

DeanT - Posted - 11/11/2016:  17:35:53

YES. It's a huge issue around here lately.

OM45GE - Posted - 11/12/2016:  05:04:25

That's definitely a strong theory right now. Proponents of fracking say there's no proof opponents say the increase in seismic activity is strongly correlated to it.

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/12/2016:  07:42:41

Don't mess (too much) with Mother Nature

OM45GE - Posted - 11/12/2016:  12:29:07

That reminds me of a joke.

DeanT - Posted - 11/12/2016:  19:10:30

I'm not sure how much simpler it gets. I've been here since 1979. Never even heard of earthquakes in our area. They start fracking, and we start having earthquakes.

Hah...strange.....John Hartford doing his thing at Hefner's club

OM45GE - Posted - 11/13/2016:  04:04:16

I agree with you Dean. To me there's no doubt. There's a lot of money at stake and they'll say whatever it takes to protect it.

DeanT - Posted - 11/13/2016:  10:14:42

Interesting Hartford video... was he at the Playboy mansion?

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/13/2016:  11:09:07

I think it was a TV set - I remember that show in the '60's. Almost laughable with John mixed in with all those dressed up city folks.

dmiller - Posted - 11/13/2016:  11:27:42

"Acid indigestion on the Richter Scale".  Some creative writing right there!

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/13/2016:  11:50:56

I bought this album around 1970 - my first Hartford album. Had "The Girl with Green Eyes", "Tall Buildings", "California Earhquake", among others.

Do you still have it?

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/13/2016:  16:32:34

Naw,,too many moves over the years. Probably left at my ex-wife's,, or my younger brother has it. He kept a lot of my stuff I forgot about after I moved away from home.

DeanT - Posted - 11/13/2016:  17:52:00

I lost a lot of stuff to x-wifes

dmiller - Posted - 11/13/2016:  18:15:03

I have only one ex-wife.  Never had any other wife or an "ex".  The one and only ex and I were civil to each other when we divorced.  What was hers and what was mine , remained so with neither of us contesting anything.  I guess I was lucky there, eh?

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/13/2016:  18:28:25

After the first few months we made peace ..we had a couple of kids to raise so it worked out ok.

DeanT - Posted - 11/13/2016:  18:57:56

I've got 3 x wives, and pretty much let everything go with them every time. I loved that feeling of freedom from stuff.

OM45GE - Posted - 11/14/2016:  03:43:16

Purging is one of my retirement plans.

DeanT - Posted - 11/14/2016:  04:23:19

I'm back to a house full of stuff, but I could easily fit the stuff I'd want to keep, in my car

dmiller - Posted - 11/14/2016:  11:53:01

I came to Minnesota for a summer job on the Gunflint Trail above Grand Marais Mn. back in 1975 and I brought every thing I owned (at the time) with me.  That included my record collection/ stereo system/ instruments/ camping equipment/ and clothing.  I didn't have much else back then, and everything I had fit in the 1966 Volkswagen Beetle I was driving at the time.

Ten years ago I came from Toronto to Calgary with all my stuff in an old Toyota Camry.

OM45GE - Posted - 11/14/2016:  18:52:40

I don't think I could fit our musical instruments in an SUV.

DeanT - Posted - 11/15/2016:  16:29:04

I wish I still had my old VW bug... I loved that thing

OM45GE - Posted - 11/15/2016:  17:41:00

I like mine too. I think it was a 1962. My first car.

dmiller - Posted - 11/15/2016:  18:11:09

1966 (I think) was the last year VW made them in 6 volt.  I remember having to buy an adapter from Radio Shack so I could install a 12 volt cassette deck in it.

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/15/2016:  18:51:24

I had a black 1961 bug....defroster was me scraping the windshield going down the freeway at 58.4 mph, with a semi passing me and engulfing the whole car in slush and ice......them's wuz da goodle daze

OM45GE - Posted - 11/16/2016:  02:43:09

I remember carrying a scraper for the inside of the windshield too.

They were also pretty easy to steal. You could open the vent window with a small screwdriver, pop the hood and pull back a piece of cardboard to expose the ignition with spade type plug in wires. I got stranded without a ride after a party once and took a bug from the apartment parking lot. I had a friend follow me over earlier the next morning and left it in the same spot with a full tank of fuel.

dmiller - Posted - 11/16/2016:  13:28:00

Those bugs did pretty good in snow too.  With the engine in the back and rwd, there was plenty of traction to get you through a fair accumulation of snow.  I think those worked better than today's front wheel drive cars.

OM45GE - Posted - 11/17/2016:  02:46:34

I put a Judson supercharger on mine. It was pretty fast until it fried a piston.

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/17/2016:  04:09:06

The new bugs hardly look like the old ones

OM45GE - Posted - 11/17/2016:  04:45:29

True, although there's more of a resemblance between a 2016 Bug and a 1961 Bug than say, a 21016 Chevy Impala and a 1961 Chevy Impala.

chuckv97 - Posted - 11/17/2016:  04:55:00

I'll say....

DeanT - Posted - 11/17/2016:  05:51:22

If I didn't have to haul around band equipment, I have one of the new bugs... I love them
