Yup. I also get into odd things. One time I watched a video about a guy who built a running miniature Ferrari V-12 motor. That led to dozens of videos about engines of all sorts.

dat - Posted - 09/20/2016:  06:54:48

I do that too, usually starts with a hit and miss engine or a steam engine though

OM45GE - Posted - 09/20/2016:  11:18:45

I've done exactly the same thing. Lots of videos about first starts of giant old engines that have sat for decades.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/20/2016:  11:22:57

What a wonderful video by the way.

dat - Posted - 09/20/2016:  11:43:37

seems like the old engines can sit for years and fire up with new gas and oil, a new engine can't sit long and it's toast.

DeanT - Posted - 09/20/2016:  12:19:05

My Ford Taurus engine didn't even sit for a day when it seized up

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/20/2016:  13:27:54

My former father-in-law retired and had a couple of old Case tractors on the farm that he hadn't used in 35 years. He worked on them for a few hours and had them running in no time.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/20/2016:  13:36:29

I think modern engines are much better built in terms of their engineering, metallurgy, construction, etc., but the electronics that make them run are not built to sit unused. You can file down a set of points and clean the plugs and get an old ignition system working fine but if a computer is fried, your engine is a boat anchor.

dat - Posted - 09/20/2016:  13:57:07

and the machining tolerances are a lot closer now, a little rust on the cylinder wall, crank or cam shaft still has room to get rubbed odd and washed away, the new ones are a lot tighter and seize up quicker

OM45GE - Posted - 09/21/2016:  03:12:06

I've heard that one of the reasons engines last longer now was when thy took the lead out of gasoline.

dat - Posted - 09/21/2016:  07:05:02

could be, but you have to run a gas treatment in older vehicles running unleaded gas to keep the valve seats from wearing down quick, the lead was a lubricant in the fuel

OM45GE - Posted - 09/21/2016:  10:07:55

I know. And the gasohol is causing all sorts of problems. I had problems with plastic fittings in the fuel system on my boat and had to change out the fuel lines on the Harley.

dat - Posted - 09/21/2016:  10:14:20

Gasohol is a mess, costs more to produce less and you get worse fuel mileage with it, and we are s'posed to love it because we use corn,  which ends up making feed costs go up because more corn is being used for fuel and less is available for feed

I may have some of the exact details wrong, but that's the way I understand it

OM45GE - Posted - 09/21/2016:  10:22:00

Those are some of the same things I've heard. It's a total mess.

dat - Posted - 09/21/2016:  10:53:53

thinking about that made me realize that it's been over a week since I've been in the room that houses my banjer,   I need to stop and spend some picking time and forget about lots of stuff

OM45GE - Posted - 09/21/2016:  13:31:36

That's my escape too. I just spent an hour on the guitar and I've almost forgotten what pissed me off at work.

dat - Posted - 09/21/2016:  14:01:35

so many things, it's hard to pick just one thing at work that did it

DeanT - Posted - 09/21/2016:  14:20:45

I run and bike and swim to escape... but hey... I'm retired, there's not supposed to be anything to escape from!

DeanT - Posted - 09/21/2016:  18:29:41

I'm guilty as charged!

OM45GE - Posted - 09/22/2016:  02:51:52

What did you do now?

dat - Posted - 09/22/2016:  05:53:29

or what didn't you do that you should have

DeanT - Posted - 09/22/2016:  07:33:18

bought as much gold as I could have 20 years ago...

OM45GE - Posted - 09/22/2016:  08:37:34

I bought some gold back in the 80's. As I recall it was worth about $8,000 total. When I was getting divorced a few years later I found out my wife had "loaned" it to her brother to use as collateral for something illegal and never got it back. By that time is was only worth about $3,000 because the price of gold had dropped. She admitted that she had given it to her brother and the judge awarded me half the original value.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/22/2016:  08:54:30

I worked in a gold mine in 1973 in NW Ontario - it was $35 an ounce back then. Once in a while after blasting you could peel a pure vein right off the rockface. Some guys put chunks in their lunchpails which were not x-rayed. If I'd've known then what I know now.....

dat - Posted - 09/22/2016:  10:35:22

if I kew then what I know now,   I would probably still screw up,   people told me when I was younger what to do, but I still went out and had fun and ignored them,  sooooooo     even knowing,  I think I would still have fun and screw up some

OM45GE - Posted - 09/22/2016:  10:51:30

Yep, I was a rebel without a clue. I can remember advice that I completely ignored just because I didn't want to be told what to do. Looking back, it was very good advice and if I had paid attention it might have saved me a lot of grief.

DeanT - Posted - 09/22/2016:  16:31:14

I got lucky, and listend to the folks who said start a retirement account,  and stay in the military.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/22/2016:  17:10:28

I'm not rich or even well off, but I have no regrets.

DeanT - Posted - 09/22/2016:  18:49:12

I'm certainly not either! In fact I like to say I'm only a catastrophe away from going back to work. We have a 834 sq/ft old house in a old neighborhood, and drive used cars... but my wife and I have gotten to live our asses off while we are still healthy enough to do it! No regrets whatsoever.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/23/2016:  03:21:42

Most of my poor decisions involve women.

DeanT - Posted - 09/23/2016:  06:12:31

Me too, 3 times.... or Chrysler products... they all blow up without warning

I married for the wrong reasons and it didn't last, but I guess it's ok since I ended up with two wonderful daughters

OM45GE - Posted - 09/23/2016:  09:39:05

#1, too young and too dumb to know it, #2, rebound, stupid, stupid move, #3, didn't realize how much I liked being single (but, like Chuck, it's OK because I ended up with a wonderful son).

DeanT - Posted - 09/24/2016:  00:51:00

It was worth the education, because #4 is awesome, and we have a really good marriage. We've been together 16 years, which is a world record for both of us

OM45GE - Posted - 09/24/2016:  04:15:57

I'm going to my Mother and Father in Laws' 65 anniversary party tomorrow. I won't make it that far if I add them all together.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/24/2016:  06:11:21

Wow..that's a long time. My folks made it to 67 years before my Mother passed.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/24/2016:  14:10:50

They're an interesting couple. Her entire family died in the Nazi concentration camps. Her parents gave her to a couple to raise as their own before they were rounded up. He's been on the cover of Life Magazine (for those who can remember Life Magazine) for fighting mafia influence in a city where he was the city manager.

dmiller - Posted - 09/26/2016:  12:04:44

Yup.  I remember LIFE Magazine.  Also National Geographic/ Popular Mechanics/ and a bunch of other DIY magazines from the 60's and 70's that got stockpiled over the years in Mom and Dad's house/ basement.  Mom was a librarian, and Dad had a voracious appetite for learning "stuff", and they had a subscription for more magazines than you could shake a stick at. Mom and Dad were married for 61 years when Dad passed away in 2011 (mom is still here), and a couple of years ago Mom, my sister, and a couple of other family members sifted through (got rid of) all those old magazines stored in the basement from the many decades past.  I don't know what they did with them, but I'm guessing they went into the recycle bin. Maybe the Smithsonian might have been interested in acquiring the collection?  wink

I know some people take old magazines and cut out ads for cars, cigarettes, food, etc. and sell them on eBay. Seems like a lot of work to me, but I guess if you have the time.

chuckv97 - Posted - 09/26/2016:  13:41:07

My mom saved some Life magazines - the one I remember most was the one after JFK was assassinated with the photo of John Jr. saluting his Dad's casket as it passed by.

OM45GE - Posted - 09/27/2016:  08:29:56

I was 12 and it made a huge impression on me. It seemed as though the whole world stopped.

DeanT - Posted - 09/27/2016:  10:19:37

I was too busy playing 45's to notice the world going by

OM45GE - Posted - 09/27/2016:  10:24:53

It was frightening to me. It was a time when they still did duck and cover drills in case there was a nuclear attack and suddenly the president was dead.

dat - Posted - 09/27/2016:  12:06:18

we just had tornado and fire drills, both were a chance to get out of class for a little bit
