I'll probably never play Wagon Wheel or Red Solo Cup or anything Mumford and Sons ever again as long as I live.

dat - Posted - 06/19/2014:  06:18:22

how 'bout "you are my Flower"   or "Fox on the Run" ?

OM45GE - Posted - 06/19/2014:  06:32:56

I wonder how some of the touring musicians do it, playing the same stuff every gig.

DeanT - Posted - 06/19/2014:  12:22:28

I've never even heard of My Flower, but have played Fox on the Run several billion times.

dat - Posted - 06/19/2014:  12:45:20

Good song, but over and over and over and over

My dad used to say Andover got it's name because of the water running over the dam, and over, and over, and over...Andover

DeanT - Posted - 06/19/2014:  18:15:20

That's a sleepy time song

chuckv97 - Posted - 06/19/2014:  18:54:32

Could never figure out how Earl brushes a down strum with a finger pick on his index. First heard that one on the first "Circle" album.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/20/2014:  04:44:45

I do down strums with my ring and pinky finger on some tunes.

chuckv97 - Posted - 06/20/2014:  20:52:29

I use just fingernails for picking guitar (nylon string). Used to use finger picks on steel string years ago. I also do the odd downstrum with ring and pinky. When I got my banjo this year after many years without playing one,the finger picks really felt weird, like trying to walk with snowshoes.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/21/2014:  04:12:46

I couldn't keep my fingernails long enough. I tried everything from horse hoof hardener to acrylics. I sail, used to rock climb, work on my motorcycles and cars, etc.. I gave up and started using picks. Now I like the sound better.

DeanT - Posted - 06/21/2014:  06:39:40

If I tried to down stroke, I would be about as clumsy as a horse hoof

OM45GE - Posted - 06/21/2014:  19:25:56

Practice, practice, practice.

DeanT - Posted - 06/21/2014:  19:43:44

Since I play with 4 picks on, I substitute an arpeggio rake for a down stroke, very effective. I also have enough fingers to do a fake clawhammer, and love to watch the reaction at a bluegrass jam.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/21/2014:  19:54:30

Four finger picks or a thumb pick and three finger picks?

DeanT - Posted - 06/21/2014:  19:58:19

Thumb and three fingerpicks

OM45GE - Posted - 06/21/2014:  20:00:29

I tried that a few times but went back to just two finger picks. You must get some interesting picking patterns out of it.

chuckv97 - Posted - 06/21/2014:  20:51:25

I use thumb and 3 fingers on guitar. Now that I'm back on banjo I only brace with my pinky. It took me a long time to get that ring finger strong and mobile - don't want to get messing with it.

DeanT - Posted - 06/21/2014:  23:44:19

I picked guitar with 4 picks for 20 years before going to banjo. There was no way I was going to change!

OM45GE - Posted - 06/22/2014:  13:56:51

No need to either. I say enjoy. If it works, do it.

dat - Posted - 06/23/2014:  10:50:25

kinda like I tell my neighbor,   I hit some of the right notes part of the time, but they're all in there somewhere, so it evens out.    I'm sure not one to fault somebody elses style, mine don't work, so the rest have to be better

DeanT - Posted - 06/23/2014:  11:24:10

I just make sure I got the chord fretted... my right hand just sort of does whatever it wants...

OM45GE - Posted - 06/24/2014:  04:08:49

Do you do any flat picking?

DeanT - Posted - 06/24/2014:  05:56:17

I haven't in a good 10 years. Since getting the banjo job, that's all I've done since.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/24/2014:  07:15:40

I still do some but mostly just finger style guitar and banjo.

chuckv97 - Posted - 06/24/2014:  08:05:08

I learned flat picking a bit when I started in my teens. Still play Wildwood Flower sometimes. I remember learning that guitar break Donovan did in Catch The Wind. I flat pick accompaniment when I sing (read "croak") kid songs with my granddaughter. "Wheels On The Bus" 5000 times...lol

OM45GE - Posted - 06/24/2014:  10:26:43

I play a bunch of flat picking stuff but I like it better when there's someone else to play with.

DeanT - Posted - 06/24/2014:  16:24:06

I play my Tele like it's a banjo now...

OM45GE - Posted - 06/25/2014:  08:21:40

I know, you've told us about that. I'm tempted to try it on my old Stratocaster.

DeanT - Posted - 06/25/2014:  11:10:23

6th string gone, 5th string .010 and spiked at the 5th fret. Tune and play identical to banjo.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/25/2014:  11:46:34

I wonder if I can find another way to fret the 5th string at the 5th fret. I'm not sure I want to put a spike in the Strat's neck. I still play the blues on it now and then. I've had it for 25 years and it's still in near mint condition.

chuckv97 - Posted - 06/25/2014:  14:05:15

I did that but didn't spike the 5th at fret five,,just kept it at full length . Used a .009 and tuned down the whole guitar one step. That would be cool to rip off FMB or something on the Strat or Tele if you were playing in a rock or country band.

DeanT - Posted - 06/25/2014:  14:58:58

I had the 5th string tuned up to high g, full length for a couple years before spiking it. Worked just fine. The only reason I spiked it, is because I was getting into some habits (really cool 5th string fretting stuff) on the Tele, and then making mistakes on my banjo at gigs. I wanted them both identical. I actually put more practice time in on my Tele than I do on my banjo total.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/25/2014:  15:10:40

Why didn't you just play the Tele at gigs? big

chuckv97 - Posted - 06/25/2014:  15:52:04

Cuz it's not the way Earl done it....wink

Earl who?

DeanT - Posted - 06/25/2014:  18:59:03

Plenty of tele players around here, and every other one who unpacks his guitar can play twice as better than I will.

There's like 4 banjo players in Kansas, so it's easier to get work...

OM45GE - Posted - 06/26/2014:  03:17:59

How many of the tele players play it like a banjo though?

DeanT - Posted - 06/26/2014:  05:42:41

Onelaugh

OM45GE - Posted - 06/26/2014:  06:49:02

Do you remember the BHO member who played really wild stuff on an electric banjo? He had a weird handle like Zeppo or Zonker and referred to himself in the third person. He is not on my friend's list anymore so he mush have left.

OM45GE - Posted - 06/26/2014:  07:06:17

Beefus! The half dozen brain cells I have left called each other long distance and came up with the name.

dat - Posted - 06/26/2014:  10:26:51

there you go, bragging about having brain cells left,   I think I killed all mine a few at a time years back

OM45GE - Posted - 06/26/2014:  10:29:36

Well, half dozen is an estimate.

DeanT - Posted - 06/26/2014:  17:01:20

I donated my brain cells to the 1970's

OM45GE - Posted - 06/26/2014:  17:53:45

Yup, a lot disappeared back then, more in the 60's.

chuckv97 - Posted - 06/26/2014:  19:09:43

I didn't start killing brain cells until I went off to College - just when I really needed them.....:-/

DeanT - Posted - 06/26/2014:  19:18:41

I was about 30 years old when I decided to preserve the brain cells I still had left

chuckv97 - Posted - 06/26/2014:  19:29:15

I was about 39 - but I didn't really decide- IT decided for me.

DeanT - Posted - 06/26/2014:  22:53:46

I had to send Jim Beam packing...

OM45GE - Posted - 06/27/2014:  04:56:42

We're getting the house painted. It needed it when we bought it four years ago but needed other things worse, like a heating system, bathrooms redone, floors repaired, etc. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. The guys asked if they could come at 7:00 AM. I said I would have been up for fours hours by then.
